I have stayed at the DTD Wyndham, Hilton and Grovesnor resorts in the past as well as several Disney resorts. I have found all to be good resorts. Granted you won't have the theming that Disney provides but you'll have the convenience of being across from DTD and the buses without having to pay a higher amount for the service. I personally have had stays at DTD Wyndham and Hilton after bidding on priceline and both hotels are very nice (bids won between $60 and $70 per night). There are several food options at both, both have nice pool/recreation areas and are directly across the street from DTD bus stops.
Someone else posted why would you want to stay in the hotels in DTD. Well IMO and after having experienced the value resort, I would choose to stay at the DTD hotels. I am an adult who occasionally goes on vacation with my mother. We are not looking for the theming provided by the value resorts, nor the fact that I don't like swimming in a pool with 35 plus children and I prefer more space in the room/bathroom. The value resorts simply aren't what we are looking for. When we use priceline, we get the Wyndham which has a really nice recreation area (don't even think I've seen more than 5 kids in the pool at one time) plus all the amentities of a resort hotel for the same price that I could pay for the AS. Now we do occasionally stay at the moderates and lower end of deluxes which does provide more of an adult experience and certainly more quiet than the value resorts. However, when we stay on Disney, you know that your going to pay at least twice or 3 times as much for the convenience of being on property. Sometimes we can afford the luxury and sometimes we can't.
In the end, all other hotels aren't going to provide the theming that you'll get on Disney property. On the other hand, after touring the parks all day, you may welcome a quiet retreat that is not disnesque. Either way I choose to look at any vacation as a way to get away from the daily problems and especially any vacation where I am heading to Disney.
P.S. - Grovesnor is a nice basic hotel. Nothing truly special about it other than it is located within walking distance to the Marketplace and if your in the tower rooms you'll be able to see some fireworks.
