I work in Central NJ and I do remember how nice of a day that was. I was surfing the net and saw on CNN what they said to be a plane crash into the WTC. I told my staff and we all went into the cafeteria. I called my parents and they mentioned that their neighbor works on the 86th floor of the 2nd tower. We were all in a state of disbelief. Outside the windows we could see huge plumes of smoke. We all did what we needed to do for the day and my DH left early to get our son at daycare, he was only 8 months.
The neighbor of my parents called his wife from the WTC towers and said he was ok at around 9:15am. He said the plane hit the other building. Unfortunately he stayed at his desk and was apparently killed during the 2nd airplane crash. He was 45 with 3 young kids. I remember driving home on the Garden State parkway that day and it was eerily silent. We went to Keansburg park that evening to gather and we could see just miles of smoke in the air. I'll never forget that day. The town next to where I was living at the time, Middletown, lost 47 people that day. It hit very close to home.
