We'd like to stop overnight in the Ashland, VA area. Is this a good area to stay in for the night? Any hotel recommendations?

It's a small town not too far from where I live. They have a fairly new Hampton Inn there that would probably be your best bet. It's right off 95 (Ashland/Hanover exit) as well. It'll be on your left - around the 2nd light after the exit. A Cracker Barrel is right off 95 as well so you can get a hearty breakfast if you want before going on your way. Coming out of the hotel, make a right at the 2nd light and follow the road all the way back past McDonald's and the gas station. It's right at the 95 south bound entrance ramp.

It's a pretty nice area north of Richmond, basic small town in a growing area.

Are you looking to stay there on your way to WDW or on your way home? If it's on the way to WDW, I'd suggest travelling another 45 minutes to an hour down I-95 to I-295 to Hopewell. It would get you around any of the Richmond traffic for the next morning. After Richmond, there aren't any major metro areas until you hit Jacksonville, FL.

I agree with the previous post about going on to Hopewell. There are several hotels just off 95 including Hampton Inn, Marriott, Holiday Inn, and Hawthorne Suites. There are also several restuarants in Hopewell. The drive from Ashland is about another 30 to 45 minutes and will get you past the traffic through Richmond.
