I've got PROBABLY one night in Atlantic City (unless I decide to make it two)...me and two kids (15 girl and 13 boy), which I guess right there narrows down the activities. :) It's really just a stop on a longer trip. I won't be gambling...won't be doing much of anything for one night, but I'd like to do SOMETHING with the kids. We would probably be arriving early afternoon, and have to leave first thing in the morning.

Unless anyone can tell me something else to do in that brief time (DD would love shopping, DS not so much  ), I'm thinking being near the beach would be good. :confused3 ARE the beaches nice there?? Is there a good hotel near one? I was thinking of the Taj Mahal because my cousin works there, but that's OK if I don't see him. :) I'm not even sure how close to a beach it is. :confused3

Beaches are lousy in AC. Sorry! Don't go anywhere off the boardwalk, it very urban/ghetto. All the hotels with the exception of one or two are on the boardwalk. Don't go off the boardwalk!

I would even suggest staying away from the "ends" of the boardwalk.

not a place I'd pick to go with kids that age. AC is nothing like Las Vegas. Consider a couple days at Cape May, Ocean City, or Wildwood. Much more kid oriented places with Ocean City being the best of the three for those ages. It's only a short drive here from AC.

Im sorry but i have to agree, try and stay out of a.c. if you can,say like ocean city ,has more to do with the kids.I only live 5 minutes from a.c and also had a business in a.c and hated it.If your going to gamble fine but not for kids.

If you have to stay in AC, the Hilton has a nice beach set up for the summer.

I agree, AC isn't the best unless you plan to stick in the casinos. But again, if you have to stay there I'm offering another vote for the Tropicana

Check my tag,
OMG, that's so funny. My DH and I got a big kick out of it. I never read tags...I'd probably learn all sorts of things if I did!

Well, I guess that shows you how much I know about Atlantic City! I made the mistake of telling my DS (13) about the possibility of staying at the Taj Mahal, and he's all psyched to do some bragging, since a bunch of his friends are fans of The Donald, from watching The Apprentice. I'm still researching and kicking this around, so thanks for the info, and I'll look at other options, and find out what other people who are headed to the same destination plan to do about an interim stop.

Thanks!

I like Harrahs it is off the boardwalk and in the Marina. It has a different clientel. Not alot of riffraf that come in with the buses or off the street. We take our dd(4) all the time she loves it. They have an indoor pool and a game room. It is also cheaper than the boardwalk.. You can always take a cab to see the boardwalk or go to the outlets.

What IS the Boardwalk like? Something I or the kids would like to see? Like I said...we won't be there for long, but we'd have a little time to do a little something. We may just end up swimming in a hotel pool and hanging out in the room wherever we stay. :confused3

I was just looking at a street map of the area, and saw a picture of Steel Pier. That's how I pictured the boardwalk. It's near the Taj Mahal too. Would we want to go to Steel Pier?? Also, Ripley's Believe It or Not is not too far. Have never been to one...would the kids like it??

If it matters, this will be a mid-week overnight.

Taj Mahal is #3
Harrah's is #10
Tropicana is #12
Steel Pier is #18 (the one closest to Taj Mahal...two "18s" is a misprint)
Ripley's is #21

This always happens...I just need to get from point A to Point B, and then I think that we should turn it into a vacation, and I make myself crazy. I am SO non-Disney trip challenged.

My favorite casino area is Bally's/Caesars. I usually can get good rates at Caesars if I book far enough in advance. There's a bunch of rides and stuff at steel pier that the kids would enjoy. Plus there are arcades al over the boardwalk.

The Steel Pier is nice. Not too big, so it probably wouldn't eat up much time. Now, I'm not sure, (haven't been down towards Taj in awhile), but I could swear up and down that Ripley's isn't there anymore (somebody please correct me if I'm wrong). There is a Rainforest Cafe on the Boardwalk down in Trump Plaza (next to Caesars). There is a newer shopping "district" between the Bally's/Claridge/Sands area (sorry, can't remember the name of the street right now), that you and your kids might enjoy -- Banana Republic, Gap, Borders, alot of the name brand clothes shops. There is a small mini golf place on the boardwalk right across from boardwalk hall (the old convention center). Beach is not that great, but it's not terrible. The casinos usually have nice areas set up on the beach.

I'm sorry... I don't think the boardwalk is all that nice. Its bordering on cheesy.

I don't remember the Ripley museum either.

The boardwalk is, basically, a way to get from one casino to another, with some places to eat and shop along the way. I wouldn't eat or buy anything from these places, though.

It's also a place to see some very strange sights and characters!

I recommended Tropicana because of The Quarter. There's shops, places to eat, an IMAX theater, all inside! You won't ever have to step foot in the city or boardwalk if you didn't want to! They also have an outdoor pool.

We love the showboat. It is right near the rides and games for the kids. It is right next to the taj.
Usually we go without the kids, but on occasion we will take them there for a couple nights and we stay at the showboat because of the location.
We feel perfectly save walking on the boardwalk with them.
It's one night and it will be exciting for them.

I guess the best thing is to stay indoors... enjoy the pool... relax in your room and get ready for your flight the next day.... Again just like what the others say.... stay away from the boardwalk... or if you do .. pls no high hopes... Borgata is a nice hotel to lounge... and more peaceful area wise than the Boardwalk.. but then what do I know.. I am about 1 hour away and only go to AC when my tribe from California visits and need some photo op... :rotfl:

Sheesh, when is the last time you've been to Atlantic City? I live in Ventnor (next town over from AC) and work in reservations at the Atlantic City Hilton. I do agree that there are definitely some more than questionable places off the boardwalk in Atlantic City (just like there are questionable places in any city) but if you know where to go and what to do you can have a great time!

As far as the "ends" of the boardwalk are concerned, I completely disagree. The Atlantic City Hilton is the first casino on the south end of the boardwalk. It is a AAA 4 diamond hotel and has been such for nine years. It boasts one of, if not the best beach facilities in Atlantic City. You can rent cabanas, chairs, umbrellas, hammocks, there's a beach bar that offers light fare and drinks. Admittedly, it's not the ideal location for kids as it doesn't offer much to do other than the beach and indoor pool.

Right next to the Hilton is Tropicana. They have an outstanding facility called "The Quarter". It's a retail and entertainment complex with several restaurants (such as The Palm, P.F. Changs, and Carmines), it's got a comedy club, karaoke place, and my favorite, the IMAX Theatre.

At the end of this month Caesars will be opening The Pier at Caesars on the pier that used to be called "Ocean One". This is also a retail and entertainment complex that looks to be very nice Caesars also has a Planet Hollywood.

Two blocks off the boardwalk from Caesars is "The Walk". These are retail outlets and restaurants. There's Jay-Z's 40/40 sports club, Ruby Tuesdays, Applebees, and many outlet stores including Gap, HM, Kaybee, Nautica, Tommy Hilfiger, Reebok, American Eagle, etc.

Right next to Caesars on the boardwalk is Trump Plaza. Trump Plaza beyond a doubt has the best beach bar in Atlantic City and for families, The Rainforest Cafe.

Ripley's Believe It or Not! is still there and on the opposite side of the boardwalk there is a pier with an Arcade and Go-Karts.

Just a few blocks from Rilpey's is Trump's Taj Mahal. Steel Pier is directly across from the Taj and a definite good place to take the kids, albeit a little expensive. For Dinner, why not head back across the boards to the Hard Rock Cafe at Taj Mahal or walk to The Showboat nextdoor and check out The House of Blues?

Borgata, Harrah's and Trump Marina are nice properties as well but have very little for kids to do other than maybe an arcade and the pool.

Also, you may want to check and see if there's a baseball game the night you are in town. The minor league baseball team plays at Sandcastle Stadium on Route 40 as you enter AC. Tickets are very inexpensive (I believe the most expensive is $10 or $12) and who knows, you may get lucky as they often have fireworks after the game. Also, when are you traveling? There is going to be an airshow on the beach the last wednesday in August that will feature both the Blue Angels and The Airforce Thunderbirds. This airshow will be one of the biggest in the country this year and did I mention it's completely free?

So, as you can see, there is plenty to do and see in Atlantic City that does not involve gambling. The areas I have mentioned are safe. If you stay in the heavily travel areas of the city (The boardwalk, The Walk Outlets, etc.) you will have no problems. Think of the boardwalk casino as bookends. On one end you have Showboat and Taj Mahal, on the other end you have Tropicana and Hilton. Everything else is in the middle.

My suggestion with kids would be to try and stay near the Taj side of the city as there are more things for kids to do on the boardwalk. Below are some links to the places I've mentioned as well as some other resources:

Atlantic City Hilton
The Tropicana & The Quarter
The Pier at Caesars
The Walk Retail Outlets
Steel Pier (Online ticket sale Buy one ticket book, get on free)
AC Surf Baseball
Atlantic City's Visitor website
AC Weekly (Local weekly publication)

Sorry for the long post but I hope I was able to help you out and to dispell the flat out untruth that there is nothing to do in Atlantic City but gamble. If you have any questions at all please feel free to PM me. :thumbsup2

Tropicana is actually a fun place to stay with teenagers. They have an IMAX theater and they renovated the whole place. All of the ceilings are painted with clouds and it looks great. There are tons of stores and restaurants (Carmines is the best)I don't go to the beach there but there is a pool. My friend is taking her 17 year old daughter there next month and they got tickets to see "Hairspray".

does AC have a very busy busy season ?? or does it just have the typical
travellers over the summer month ??
