We are staying off site this trip, and I'm wondering where do you keep your money in your hotel room? We certainly don't want to carry it with us everyday-we use alot of Travelers Checks. When we stay at a Disney Resort, they have the safe in the room which is great. But I'm a little concerned about off site. Thanks!

What off-site hotel will you be staying at? I believe that most hotels do have in room safes- I would call to inquire with the hotel to confirm this. I have also heard that some hotel have safe deposit boxs. I personally would not be comfortable hiding my money/traveller's cheques in the room!

Grover in Winnipeg :p

The way I figure it, it's impossible to hide money in a hotel room. If you have a dishonest maid, she's going to know all the places you could possibly dream up. We take very little cash on vacation. We do get some traveler's checks, but rely mostly on a credit card. I recommend to take at least 2 different cards with you, just in case you max one of them out. We always use a credit card that has no balance on it. We pay it off as soon as we get the bill, and avoid paying any interest charges that way.

You might try asking at the hotel check-in desk about safe deposit boxes. Most have them and some we've used don't charge for the service. If you have paper tickets for air flights, that's a good place to keep them as well.

Hotel staff bent on mischief tend to have been around long enough to know where to look. My parents lost some very well hid money in a 5 star hotel in England a few years ago. Also check with the hotel management if you leave anything in their safe - they may have limited liability in case of loss.
We spread the money (or Traveler's checks) between my wife and myself and tend to keep it on our person. We also leave some hidden in the car and/or room safe if there is one.
Seems like the best overall tact is to assume you will eventually have a loss and try to limit the imact.

If a safe is not available I lock all money and valuables in my suitcase. Sure, they could just steal the suitcase, but at least I'd notice that right away instead of wondering if I had hidden the money somewhere else! I also carry most of my money as traveler's checks.

AT HIFS the safe has a programable lock so you can make your own code to lock the safe. I thought this was much safer than the key kind.

We have stayed off site 4 times and they have always had safes in the rooms. But do call them.Good luck......

my husband wonderful man that he is , hides money in a very unual place... he pulls up the vent to the air duct and hides it there. lol...

Ever since I started traveling on spring breaks in college, I have always hid my money in my DIRTY underwear!! I have never had a penny missing. Now the odor..........

LOL Laz! That's a good one. The problem is I am always doing laundry at the hotel, so we won't have any dirty underwear!! (I'm kidding!) Thanks for the suggestions everyone!:p :p

I have the best spot!

go buy a box of tampons. carefully slit open the wrapper, dont trash it. remove the tampon from the applicator. roll your money up and put it in the applicator. put the applicator back into the wrapper and the whole thng back in the box. nobody will touch it!

my luck would be that my hotel housekeeper would need one and use one of mine and oops, find a bunch of money! We only use a credit card now and an ATM for small cash. I used to carry all of our Travelers Cheques in my fanny pack. It had a zipped section on the back, next to my body, that I kept them all in.
