Where to grocery shop in NYC?

Reading this thread is giving me flashbacks! :rotfl:

I lived in NYC for 4 1/2 years and I do not miss it at all! I'm in LA now and it's so much easier to live here! NYC is awesome - and somewhere I believe everyone should try living. But it is a very difficult lifestyle.

I personally see them as Californian people. I have always felt my daughter would end up in CA. But it did seem so much more expensive even compared to NYC especially considering they would have to have cars in most places out there. Neither one is in a technical field so while they will make enough money to support themselves, right out of college in a non-technical job just didn't seem to pay much in CA. I wouldn't be surprised if they ended up on the west coast, though.

I haven't checked this thread for a few days. Glad the grads have found a place! Heat is included in the rent in NYC, unless they're subletting a condo, in which case it'd depend on the type of lease they signed. I hope they enjoy their time in NYC. I love it here. Many people do not...but many people do!

My roommate, who just moved here from LA, has been lamenting how much more expensive NYC is compared to CA. Rent is cheaper in LA. She also says that the exact same work she did (same company) is paid less in NYC than in LA.

I think your roommate is right. Overall, I do believe much of CA is the same or less expensive than NYC. But the jobs they were finding out there were not paying much and were in some of the pricier areas.
They move next week. I am both very excited for them and sad, but I can't wait to visit. There will be a lot of weekends in NY for us in the near future.

NYC is DEFINITELY more expensive than LA. Besides the car thing, which is more expensive (being able to have all your transportation included in a relatively low monthly fee in NYC is awesome and something I definitely took for granted). I could not even fathom living by myself in NYC, whereas in LA I can live in a 1 bedroom. Food is cheaper. Everything is just cheaper.
