Where to go instead of Florida?

Dare I say it, but we are feeling a little overdone with Florida and are planning on trying somewhere else next year, but the big question is where? I've been to California and don't really want to travel that far. The problem is Florida spoils you for other places *** it's got everything you could need. We don't like to be bored and a pure beach holiday is a definite no. Any suggestions on your next favourite place after Florida?

We loved New York for a city break and are taking a week next year to explore Washington DC :)

Would love to go to Boston but that would be more than a city break with all the New England states so close by!

Claire ;)

1. new york city ---this is my far and away first choice - i love NYC

2. road trip in any of the regions of the US (e.g. new england; any of the national parks; etc.)

3. road trip that includes Chicago - also a very nice city (a close second to new york in terms of cities) --
you could include the Great Lakes and a drive to northern michigan, including mackinac island (pronounced mackinaw).
That is, assuming you're talking summer. If the winter, there are some great ski trips to be had just about anywhere in the northern half of the US (east midwest and west)...

New York and Vegas are both amazing places but NY is V expensive and Vegas again a long flight.
We have done 2 West coast trips and if we want a change from Florida it would be back over there again and include San Fran next time. Easy for me as I love flying and sleep a lot on flights, if you don't want the long flight makes it hard.

DC is very nice - different from NYC, but very nice...
and it's relatively compact in terms of what there is for tourists (museums, government buildings)..

i think however, i would combine it with something else...
perhaps NYC and DC...
you can take the train down from NYC.....the metroliner only takes 3 hours each way...
you board in penn station in manhattan and take it right into DC...
very convenient....

How easy is it to get to Philadelphia for the day?

Claire ;)

Try Cap Salou in Spain. Salou itself is a nightmare, but Cap Salou is quieter, more village like. It is situated just along the coast from Salou. The beach is nice, there is a nice square of restuarants and Port Aventura is a 15 minute bus ride away if you are missing the American style theme parks.

Having done a med. cruise this year - I would recommend that. I guess it depends on what sort of holiday you are after.

Personally, seeing loads of new places and never having to unpack, wall to wall sunshine and free food takes a lot of beating.

i've never been to Philadelphia - though the train does go through there...
but i'm not so sure how good the neighborhood is that the train stops in..(30th street station - if it's the same as when we lived in manhattan)..

it's about halfway between new york and DC....so i guess it's about an hour and a half from either side (NYC or DC)....

by the way, i just checked the amtrak site - the fast train between new york and washington is now called the "Acela Express" and takes 2 hours and 50 minutes between NYC and DC....

for info on train travel in the US check the following two sites:
www.amtrak.com

How about Canada? Only spent a couple of days there myself (at Niagra Falls) but very friendly people and loads to do!

Try Turkey, Very Nice Part Olu Deniz
5* Resort Lykia World Residence, been there 4 times........

If you want an excellent theme park and an on-site hotel try portaventra on Salou, Spain. If you can combine this with a city break to Barcelona it is a superb alternative to Orlando. We did it 2 years ago and recommend it. :worship: :rotfl2: :cool1:

We love Virginia. You've got the Smoky Mountains, Williamsburg for a bit of 'real' history and the Outer banks in North Carolina for great beaches. If you fancy travelling north, there is Washington DC not too far away!

Plenty to do!!

Why don't you try something completely different.....

Safari holiday.
I went to Kenya many years ago and broke the holiday up with a safari in the middle. This was just a bog standard jeep safari but now you can go on hot air balloons.

Sailing holiday in Greece
Although I agree Florida is amazing I still class this as my best holiday. The first week you stay on land and go sailing everyday learing how to sail and then the second week you live on the boat and island hop in a floatilla. It's absolutely fantastic and the greek islands are amazing and it never gets boring as you're learning all the time but still have time to relax and stop and swim when ever you fancy.

Motorhome
Wht not do an open jaw flight to Canada. Fly into Vancover - drive to Calgary and fly home from there. The scenery will be amazing.

Rail holiday
On the Canada theme - why not take the train that takes you over the rocky mountains.

I could go on and on. If I won the lottery you wouldn't see me for dust!

Have fun planning.

We're going to salou next year as it has the theme park for the kids, beach for me and Barcelona close by for hubby. It just sound so nice to get a short flight for once although I'm sure we'll miss florida a lot

Wash your mouth out!!!! :lmao: :lmao:
Only joking! After Florida we love the Carribbean, especially Antigua, or for somewhere closer to home we like Gran Canaria or The Algarve. I guess it depends what you want to do - relax or adventure.

I have to agree with you, after 7 visits, I have had enough of the mouse and wish to visit ither places. Its not just the Disney way, I think I have had enough of America, I came back not ever wanting another burger, pizza, steak !

I know my wife is keen on going round britain in the car on a sort of Bill Bryson road trip, which I quite fancy, but other places for us are

Visit Iceland again.
Cananda (Vancouver).
A holiday in the snow somewhere.
France (again the wife loves it here)

you mean there are other holiday destinations????????

That made me laugh! It's a bit how I feel really. Thanks for all your suggesions everyone. I have been to Eastern Canada, Las Vegas, LA, Phoenix, San Francisco, Memphis New England (though I'd love to do that again one day) and New York area. Virginia is one I've been looking into. If I'm truly honest I just love the States and would be more than happy to go anywhere in the US but the kids really NEED a theme park nearby, then their happy. Salou may be an option but I'm so negative if it's not the US which is very narrow minded of me I know. We are the kind of family that like to have a lot to see and do. Anyone been to Germany to Europa Park?
