We went to WDW in May of this year and are looking to go somewhere else this year. With so many options through RCI it's hard to choose! Where have you been and what would you suggest for us? We have 2 kids DD 13, and DS 9..
Where would you take them and why?

That's too broad a statement to know how to address, too many options and locations without knowing your preferences. For RCI, one will do best planning a full year or more out and putting in an ongoing search.

I dont really have any preferences, just wanted an idea of where people have been that they really liked and with children of those ages that the kids would like as well. Hawaii plane tickets are so expensive right now that it's out of the question. Cant get my husband to go to Mexico with everything going on down there. I guess anywhere in the US, Canada or Carribean would be nice.

That's what I mean, those would have been two of my top choices. Aruba is a good option but tickets won't be much less than HI. Big Cedar is close to you but a fabulous place. HH and MB are great beach options, can't speak to the TX options. Williamsburg, Wisconsin, ski areas in summer are all great options. However, when you look at RCI options that are comparable to DVC, it starts to get restrictive. I've exchanged extensively with RCI and II both, you just have to research and plan.

Where is Big Cedar? I havent lived here long enough to even know what is in my own back yard..lol

Haven't stayed there yet, but we're hoping to exchange with RCI next year for a resort in Williamsburg, VA. I can't speak to the resort, but I can definitely suggest that if you haven't been there, Williamsburg is an amazing place. If your kids are at all into history, they are at good ages to appreciate it. There's also Jamestown and Yorktown in addition to Colonial Williamsburg, as well as Busch Gardens and of course VA beach.

Big Cedar Lodge is just outside of Branson. It's WONDERFUL! We've been many times because it's only about a 3 1/2 hour drive for us, and one of my sister's got married at their property (Dogwood Canyon) in July. Our favorite time of year to go there so far has been November. The weather is still pretty good and the whole place is decorated for Christmas. It's absolutely beautiful!:goodvibes

Tablerock Lake, near Branson. I haven't been there but by all accounts it's one of the premier resorts in the world and every bit the rival of top Marriott and DVC options. You may have heard of it as the Bass Pro Shop resort.

Other than maybe 4th of July, Williamsburg is a pretty easy exchange. One thing to know about the resorts in Williamsburg is that the resorts are generally not very close to the attractions/historic area. The exceptions are the Westgate resort and the first Bluegreen resort, neither are on the DVC list (WG is II). As an example, there's a rental for next Late July for a week in a 2 BR unit for $795 and Marriott 2 BR units for June to early July for $1500-1800.

With DVC/RCI exchanges isn't it more about what's available instead of where you want to go. Reading the posts here on the DIS and talking to family members that have RCI privileges, getting your requested resort is a near impossibility.

No Bill, it really isn't. I suspect your perception is fueled by reports of people who are reporting their experiences along the lines of your perception. The problem with that is that most DVC members who attempt to exchange do so completely wrong and very poorly. They don't plan far enough ahead (1 yr min), they do an ongoing search and they aren't flexible enough. Even done correctly DVC isn't great for trading but it can trade so much better than the experience of most that post here. Certainly one should plan with an eye to what's likely to be available OR with the idea of shooting for high end choices realizing they may not be successful but that the prize is worth the risk. The latter would plan accordingly for other options if needed and they did not match. The other mistake I think many make is not investigating the independent exchange companies. Exchanging, done right, is a fair amount of work.

As I posted somewhere a few days ago, I don't think I've ever had a truly unsuccessful search and I've had maybe 200-250 (guessing) over the past 15 years over II, RCI weeks, RCI points, and SFX. I've also made many difficult reservations with DVC, Bluegreen and Marriott Timeshare Points, often using some type of wait list.

I have a question, while I have no problem planning far in advance. I am wondering how close to the time of travel do you find out if your reservation has been granted?
thanks

There is no one answer. It could be as much as 2 months out or as little as 1 month. Of course you could always cancel and get a refund of the exchange fee if your plans change or you don't match by your cutoff time. The problems arrises when your plans change before you have a chance to cancel and you match in the interim. I'm sure there's a cutoff date where they will not match you without getting your permission but I'm not sure what it is now with their changes, I'd guess either 30 or 45 days. Maybe Jim, Brian or someone else know for sure what RCI's policy is on this. It's possible that DVC's policy is different but not likely. It's especially unclear if it's an RCI points resort because I'm not sure that anyone else has the ability to search first. My guess is DVC is doing these searches manually anyway though.

I checked out Big Cedar. It sounds fantastic. I was thinking about maybe trying it for our Anniversary in Sept 2012 so i went on their website and every date I put in said no availability. Would that be because you have to be a member and go through DVC to see what is actually available? On their own website it says you can just book direct through them. Can anyone help me with this? The nice thing is it's only a 6 hour drive so we wont have to fuss with plane tickets!

We've booked direct with Big Cedar every time we've gone, so I don't think it has anything to do with owning a timeshare there. My guess is maybe they haven't actually opened up the dates for Sept. 2012 yet, but I'd call just to make sure. If you need any advice on the different accomodations, let me know. For my sister's wedding, we had all different types of rooms and cabins, so I've seen most of them. We have typically stayed in Valley View Lodge and just had a normal studio type room. The cabins with the full kitchens are super nice though!:thumbsup2

What dates are you looking at and I can check availability for the timeshare side directly. You can email me directly if you want for that purpose.

We've always loved:

Williamsburg....besides all the history there is a Busch Gardens & waterpark...a few years ago we got a good flex ticket that included many attractions...stayed at the Marriott at Ford's Colony....very nice.

Sanibel....very relaxing, great shelling and eats. Fort Myers has Ford's summer home.

Door County, Wisconsin

Our friends really like Destin area and Gatlinburg, TN

Thank you for your suggestions. I will look them up for future family trips. What do you usually do on these trips if I might ask?

Have you thought about a trip to Boston? It's a great place to bring kids. You can see all of the historical sites and hit up kid-friendly places like the Museum of Science and the Aquarium. There are lots of things to do in Massachusetts outside of Boston, too.

Subbing so I too can read about where people go. I forgot to use 150 points and they expire in Feb 2012 (previously banked) so I will be depositing them in the next week to RCI for an exchange. I have no idea where I want to go at this time and though I love Hawaii the airfare is very high.

PP, since you are located on the West coast, I would suggest Pacific NW, or other Western locations that you can drive to or get cheap air. We have exchanged via RCI (but not using DVC) for Oregon (Whispering Woods) and loved it so much, we have gone back 3X from the East Coast. It is near Mt. Hood (summer glacier skiing). The area has great trout fishing, hiking, golf, and day trip to Portland is 45 minutes away. We also like Whistler, BC (summer--though it's great for skiing in winter), and the Vancouver area. Sedona also has very nice resorts, and you could combine that with a Grand Canyon trip. Lake Tahoe and Cabo are other West Coast options.
On the East Coast, we like Williamsburg and Hilton Head. we live near DC, but that would also be tops for me---but there aren't many timeshares near DC.
