Where to get a camera fixed??

Sorry I don't have details, but I have a roughly $500 camera...SLR type and sand got in the lens and it won't move now. I took it to Best Buy and they wanted $200 to fix it. Is there a better, less expensive place to get it fixed?

Depends on the camera.

Is it a DSLR? If so, what lens? If it's the standard kit lens you could pick up a used one for a lot less than $200.

If it's an advanced point and shoot or bridge type camera, what model is it? If it's a couple years old it may be cheaper to replace it than to repair it, but it depends on the camera.

And I wouldn't trust Best Buy to sharpen a pencil for me, much less repair my camera. They don't have the best reputation in this area.

Try sending it into Canon (link to Canon repair request Web site).

I would call/email the lens manufactor and see what to do. By doing so, I found out a lens I bought last year has a 6 year warranty. I sent it off (paying only for shipping) and had it back good as new in 2 weeks.

I wouldn't trust Best Buy to fix a camera. I'd be curious to know if they guarantee a fix, or if that's just the charge to blow compressed air in it and hope it gets better.

Finding an authorized repair center would be the trusted way to go, but don't count on it being cheaper. Labor costs will eat up a good chunk of the charge, and if you need any parts, it could end up costing as much as the camera.

Find an authorized repair center and contact them with the problem to get an estimate. Maybe you'll get lucky, but my guess is you're not going to find a less expensive solution.

I have used Precision Camera and been very happy. They will give you an online quote and then if you like the price just send it in. They did a great job at keeping me up to date and returned it pretty quickly. They handle different makes and models so yours should be fine. Just another option.
