Hi All!
My Mom was recently diagnosed with Diabetes. I was wondering if there are any good websites out there for recipes that are sugar free or very low sugar? I am hoping for things like cookies or snacks like that. Thanks bunches!:D :D

What a thoughtful idea! Just a point of clarification, the "sugar" being referred to when a diabetic is said to be "watching their sugar" is blood sugar (or more accuartely blood glucose) and it comes from any intake of carbohydrate in someone with diabetes as well as someone without the condition. The difference is how well the body processes it.

Refined sugar is no longer automatically banned from a diabetic's diet. Rather the total amount of carbohydrate intake should be monitored (along with fats and sodium because of their contribution to possible side effects).

Having said that there are lots of recipes out there that substitute apple sauce for sugar and oil. But if you're thinking an occasional treat or birthday celebration etc mom can probably have regular stuff - just in small portions and she'll have to trade off something else. That is the bigger reason "sugary" treats are usually quite limited for a diabetic - to eat them means eliminating something with more nutrients.

REALLY? Apple sauce as a replacement for sugar and oil? I've never heard that before - interesting!:D

My Mom does watch everything she eats carefully, but her doctor has specifically told her to avoid sugar whenever possible because her condition is so bad and hereditarally very bad. She's a big snacker, and really likes cookies fresh from the oven. So, I thought I should find some recipes that she could have more that a cookie or two.

Her blood sugar has really stabilized - down from between 350 - 400 (when we discovered the disease in the ICU), to 80 - 120 now.:D :D

Check with the doctor about substituting Splenda. This is a product manufactured directly from sugar and is used by most people on low carb diets.

There is no after taste and the ratio is 1/1 for sugar vs. Splenda and it can be found in the grocery store.
