I'm recently unemployed & looking for legos for my ds9. He is addicted to legos - but it is a costly habit. Has anyone discovered a cheap/free way to source legos? TIA for any help!

Well, here's a cheap source in our town. Our local library sponsors a "lego club". It's held in the children's room every Saturday afternoon for 2 hours. The kids go, they get to plow through buckets and buckets of legos (I think there are 8 - 18 gallon Rubbermaid tubs that have been donated to the library by local families as their kids outgew them. Some have instructions, some don't, but the kids can get together to create and play with something they love and many of the pieces are different from what they have at home so the toys are of the "new to you" variety. The legos stay at the library but they don't seem to mind. Best part - it's free. Check with your library they might do something similar or know how you could start a lego club of your own.

Also, yardsales can be your friend. I got a big bucket for $4 one time.

If you do not mind..Which library sponsers this club? my son (7) is also addicted to legos. I noticed you are from SouthEastern Ma. We live in Swansea, MA. Thank you so much!!!

Yardsales! For years my MIL bought legos by the bucketful all over town for her grandsons. They had a huge plastic storage thing with pull out drawers filled to the brim with legos. I don't think she ever paid more than $3 or $5 for buckets or boxes full of legos. Not a bad investment either for those kids.. they probably started playing with legos when they were 5 or 6 and are 13 now, and still play with them.

Kroger Marketplace runs 40% off on occasion. I have seen buy 2 get 1 free at both Toys R Us and KMart.

We've found Lego at Kid-to-Kid as well - we got a big bucket for about $10 that had a ton of pieces in it. Some of them were Mega-Blox, but we donated those to our DD's school. You can also check Goodwill, but I would think Lego would go very quickly there!

While not the best value, I also recommend the Pic-a-Brick wall at your local Lego store (if you have one). For a set price, you get to full a container full of as many pieces as you can fit, and there are usually some really cool, uncommon pieces that are great to add to a general brick collection.

My DH has 30 year old Lego he still plays with, so I think that Lego is always a good investment! :rotfl: But we definitely do look for deals when we can!

Do you have a Border's near you? They have a coupon (good thru 9/18) that is 30% one item - works on the Legos there (actually all toys!) Good as it gets for us!

Lego stores also have a "dump bag" of parts that they sell for cheap(ish) - they sell a bag for $7. They use the leftovers from the pic-a-brick, ones kids have mixed up, and returns of sets they could not resell. There are always cool pieces in there - flowers, wheels, steering wheels, ladders, teeny wrenches and screwdrivers the min-figs hold in their hands, clear bricks...tons and tons. While the volume is not enormous, that $7 is the best I have ever spent. My son plays with all the odd pieces every single day.

Call ahead - they don't always have them, and they go FAST.

If you are looking for boxed sets, try Tuesday Morning if you have one near you. I have seen them in there occasionally, and a year or so ago they had a big shipment/advertised special of Batman kits at half price the retail value. I bought a bunch of those and am dispersing them between two/three Christmases. My kids don't need any more individual bricks, they have two HUGE storage boxes of those.

Also with Christmas nearing, ToysRUs will probably have some kind of sale, I have participated in a "Buy two get one free" so it's like a third off if all are the same price.

Well the favorite here is to do the Lego Club meetings at the Lego Retail Stores. They are the 3rd and 4th Saturday of each month, you have to register for them on the 1st of each month and they only allow 15-20 kids per date (depending on your stores size). It costs $15 but you get to play for an hour before the store opens doing a theme based free build, the kids talk about what they built, and then they give you a Lego T shirt based on that weeks theme AND a big grab bag of bricks (similar to the ones they sell) with bricks and figures from previous meetings. You can't beat the value at $15 and it's a day out, souvie shirt, and bag of bricks for the money.

How about Craigslist. I myself just sold a bag of them there.:)

Target usually has Lego sets on clearance when they do their twice yearly toy markdowns (the next one will be in January). I've gotten big sets 75% off, but they go fast.

Obviously finding some at a yard sale would probably be your cheapest bet, but I rarely see them (and I go to yard sales almost every weekend). I did find an enormous box of them for $20 a couple years ago, and that's probably the best money I've ever spent on toys!

I bought a bunch for my son off of Ebay for Christmas last year. We got 3 pounds for about $20, and believe me, 3 pounds is a lot of legos! Filled up one of those big flat-rate-shipping boxes to the brim, and we had a lot of neat pieces in there, including ones from Star Wars and Indiana Jones sets.

While they are not Lego brand, Toys R Us carries an "off" brand that are completely compatible to Legos. I bought a HUGE (500+ peice set) that was fire fighter themed for my godson for $20.99 The same size fire fighter set with similar items in Lego brand was $89.99

goodwill amber and i got a huge bag of legos with two boards and lots of uncommon legos for two bucks. after we split the bag between us we each ended up with a ice cream bucket full.
