What are some good on property restaurants to eat at the night before a race?

I always try to go for sushi the night before a race. At Disney, that doesn't always work so well, so we've done Portabello on Friday and Flying Fish on Saturday during Goofy. That's worked pretty well too.

We ate at the Wave in the Contemporary last year and it was nice. Fairly healthy, fairly light.

I'm going to try Via Napoli before the full in Jan. I like pizza the night before a race so hopefully it's good. I'm from Chicago so it has a lot to live up to.

Friday(before Half): I usually have some pasta and chicken the night before at Pikabu at Swan/Dolphin. Have done this in the past also at Pop food court.

Sat(before Full): I do pizza as well from either Via Napoli(or Boardwalk).

Look...the best advice is go with what you've been doing. If you've eaten Italian the night before a long run, then do Italian....if you've done fish the night before a long run then do fish....your training leading up to the race should dictate where you eat.

The key for the races the night before, morning of, and during is do the same as training. Doing something new is always a recipe for disaster. Practice what you will do race weekend :)

JCH - are you running or walking??? makes a HUGE difference...

How can you say that runners and walkers have to eat different foods the night before, the morning of, and day of. Is this just a smack on walkers or have you done both and have had different diets when you did each of them :confused3

I have NEVER seen that how you fuel your body different between walking or running. Please send me the links as I would like to see who has trained and raced as both and can give a first hand experience :)

Colleen, Panda, and other walkers, please post your pre and race day rituals on how you handle the Half, Marathon, and Goofy's :)

First of all - not sure why bullying by ScoJo is taking place on this thread when it is all about where you eat :confused3, and the suggestion that what you eat depends on if you are walking or running is absolutely wrong. There are many people on this board that have websites, blogs, etc. that are still welcome here and many of us run/walk, run and walk these races and not one of us achieves more by which route we take during a race and I commend so many for just answering the question the OP asked...

As far as what restaurants I like to eat at, I prefer to stay away from Pasta. I just don't like it and I will incorporate some carbs into my meals before a race but just a tiny bit. I just found that having more protein works better for me. I know that others do much better with Pasta or many other things. I really like California Grill so that is my pre-race ritual for now. I can't wait! Yum! :goodvibes

this thread is spiraling down and against more thaan one of the boards guidelines such as no fighting/sarcasm; no personal messages; staying on topic. Rupert just added a nice segway back to the original topic and friendly conversation, thank you. If this thread doesn't continue in that manner, Lily and I walk discuss closing it

um...wow...I was just trying to make ADRs for the Princess Half, didn't mean to start a fight! :confused3

Thanks to those who actually responded...I think I'll go with Italian as someone suggested sticking with what you normally eat, which shouldn't be a problem at Disney. I'm a fairly new runner, following the Galloway run/walk method.

The snarkyness wasn't your fault and you are a hero for making the decision to be fit and strong.

I was a regular runner for about 35 years and a competitive race walker for the last 6 years. I have eaten the same pre event meals for as long as I can remember. I just had a Pr in the half by eating Chicken Critters, baked sweet potato and a salad the night before the race and eating 2 bagles a couple of hours before the race. I think it's more important what you eat on race morning than what you eat the night before. With the exception of hot Mexican food, save that for after the race or you might have some unpleasent issues during the race.

Eh, I would probably eat slightly different if I were walking instead of running. It doesn't mean I look down on walkers, I just know I would personally fuel differently.

That being said there is no right or wrong answer, just go with what you know. Don't do anything new like try sushi or Indian for the first time the day before. I had dinner at Portobello the night before the marathon in January because everyone in my group does a pre-race pasta meal. If that is what you like I would make an ADR. We had one and because of the runners the restaurant was packed. Even with the ADR we waited around a while but we walked into the bar and spoke with some ladies who were there for the race so the time went quickly.

My suggestion is as others have stated, try to eat as closely to what you've done during training. Fortunately Disney has a lot of restaurants that cover the entire food spectrum...from seafood to pasta and beyond. There is no right or wrong answer across the board, everyone's digestive systems and metabolism are unique and what works for me won't work for someone else. With that said, I know it's really tricky when you are at a destination race such as Disney because your entire schedule is thrown into a tailspin and sometimes you can't even find the foods you might have had during training. For Wine & Dine, I am going to really attempt to maintain a similar light diet the day prior to the race, but seeing as I'm only doing the relay it's not as crucial as when I run a half, full or Goofy.

Good luck on your race JCH!!! :goodvibes

Why would you fuel differently Frank?

I know I wouldn't need as much stored energy to do 26.2 at a walk or even a slow jog as I do to try and maintain a BQ pace. Everyone is different of course but I know I wouldn't need to eat as much the day before or take in as much on-course gel. I wouldn't worry about the switch from burning glycogen to fat and trying to push that off as long as possible to try and keep my times down.

Thanks! That's why I was asking for suggestions, I wouldn't have thought of Portobello and two people suggested it. I looked at the menu, and it looks perfect!

Not sure if I'm the Colleen you were referring to, but I would agree with many other posters not to try something new. That being said, I generally do not follow my own advice as during training, most of my long walks are on Saturdays and I am generally at wine tasting on Friday nights and tend not to think about endurance nutrition. However, I almost always have pasta the night before a race, probably because I live with a runner and that's what he eats.

As for nutrition for runners vs walkers, I am certain that my hubby the runner has different nutritional needs than I do as a walker. Frankly even though we may be covering the same number of miles over the same course we are not doing the same race- he works harder while I am working longer. We are expending a different amount/type of energy and we are on the course for a signficantly different amount of time.
