Leaving in 10 days!
Outside of DL (have that all figured out) some places to eat in Orange County (Laguna area) and Coronado, but we will be all over San Diego.

We have 3 children; 15, 12, and 4.

Has anyone heard of the Orange County Mining restaurant? What is it all about, and how is the food?

Thanks,

Christine

We were just there in July, and went one day to the Block at Orange- an open air mall not to far away. They have lots of places. We went specifically for the Corner Bakery (which they don't have here in Austin, and I missed from Chicago). Great breakfast and lunch.

We like Mimi's Cafe on Harbor, Yamabuki in the Paradise Pier Hotel, and almost everything at the Block.

To get to the Block take the 5 south from Disneyland to City Drive (about 2 exits, I believe) get off and make a right. It will be on your right hand side.

My faves at the block:
Johnny Rockets - Great 50's Diner, Fun and good onion rings.
Left at Albequerque - Yummy food. Love the tequila chicken and the Black & Blue Steak Sandwich.
Fast ones:
Quiznos: Fast sub place with good toasted subs.
Jodie Maronies - Yummy Sausage Place

Other yummy
Knott's Chicken Dinner restaurant. Take the 5 north from Disneyland to beach Blvd. Make a left. It will be on the right. Awesome fried chicken (I love the broiled chicken with garlic lemon butter and red potatoes).

Fast near Knott's
Baja Fresh - Great California style healthy Mexican food. Fresh food, just like the name.

Also near KNott's
Claim Jumper on the right of beach Blvd, next to the coke store.

Spaghetti Station is good and a great value too.

My top choice.
Whitewater Snacks in the Grand Californian Hotel. They have this grilled chicken sandwich with fresh California Chiles, Homemade Guacamole, and a toasted bun. Sooo GOOD! Comes with fries and the price is right.

Hope this gives you some ideas
~Tina

Wow- I wish I had had that info in July! The Whitewater Snack sandwich sounds great- and we were looking for a place for lunch in CA right around that spot one day (we settled for a burger at the Taste Pilots place) We did make it to the Storyteller's Cafe at the Grand Californian for dinner one night- a bit pricey for the buffet, but great food.

<font color=navy>I was driving around that area yesterday, and just a mile or two south on Harbor Blvd there's a Bakers Square, Outback Steakhouse, Bucca di Beppo (shoot, what's the name?), and some other restaurants very close to the DL Resort.

The Orange County Mining Company is one of our favorite restaurants. The mining theme is great and we've always enjoyed the food. It can be pretty funny around December and May/June because it is a favorite of the high-schoolers for prom dinners. Seeing the formals in that setting is a riot.

We havent been there in years ti the DL area but there used to be this place called china doll and it was great we will be looking for it in a week. It was right across the street from DL in a little mini mall. Also when we went south there was this great restaurant called the Marine room, the ocean waves actually hit the restaurant walls that were glass and you could see birds ridding the waves and diving for fish. My kids still talk about it. Good luck and great eating!!

If you're going to Sea World, you might be able to dine with Shamu. That's a pretty cool experience.

There's a Claim Jumper in Carlsbad, if you happen to be driving from DL to San Diego at meal time.

Thanks everyone for the responses so far. Printing as I write.:D
Just looked up the Marine Room on the internet. Looks realy nice.

Amusement Park Junkie- Where about is the Orange County Mining restaurant? Trying to find a website.

DD- I know WHO are claim jumpers, but are you saying there is a restaurant called "claim jumpers"?

Thanks Again!

Christine

Yes, they started in Southern California, I believe, and have spread a bit in the last few years. I've eaten at the one by Knott's, and the ones in Concord, Roseville, and Santa Clarita (by SF Magic Mountain), besides the one in Carlsbad. They're pretty good, featuring big portions, so you might need a refrigerator in your room if you go (best to get the desert to go - I highly recommend the caramel apple cheesecake). Generally, if you get there before 5:30, you can order off the lunch menu, which is a little cheaper but still plenty of food. As you might expect from the name, they are themed to the '49 gold rush.

Also, if you're into that sort of thing, there are several dinner shows near Knott's - Medieval Times and such.

Douglas Dubh-just went to the web site. Great menu!

Thanks,

Christine

OC Mining Company:

Great view of the cities of Orange and Anaheim from here. Dusk view usually has a lot of haze/smog. The lights after dark, however, are pretty impressive. Can see the Disneyland fireworks in the distance if you're timing is right. The entrance is up a narrow winding road. Easy to miss if you're not looking for it.

Amusement Park Junkie-Thanks for the information on OC Mining CO.
Looks like a good time.

I grew up in Orange County and although I have not been there in about 10 years, one of our favorite restaurants was the Crab Cooker on the Newport Peninsula. If your family likes fish, this would be a great place to go. They used to serve the food on paper plates and you would sit at picnic tables. The food was fresh and the best fish around. The have a website too:

mchuey-Thanks! That also looks great. Way too many options now!

My wife and I love a little place called Rock'n Baja Lobster down by the Newport Beach Pier. Address is 2104 W. Ocean Front, Newport Beach, Ca Phone is 949-723-0606. They have buckets of seafood and it is ROCKIN' !! You get shrimp, chicken, steak, lingustino, crab and lobster all in your bucket. It's like $20 a person. They also have these great tortillas (baja style) and a salsa bar with different kinds of "baja-type" salsa's. (They're a little sweeter than mexican salsa) Afterwards, you can take a walk on the pier and get a sundae or ice cream cone at Ruby's at the end of the pier.

Casual dress and usually a short wait to get in. We've lived in this area for 35 years and it's our favorite non-Disney place to eat!

Roy

P.S. Bring along some quarters for the parking meters.
