11 yo DD got a pug puppy today. It is just adorable. I have never had a dog in the house before. (haven't had a dog since I was a child) Where should I let the dog sleep tonight? It has a bed and a crate, but I'm not sure where it's supposed to sleep.

I'd say in a crate! Get him trained from the start. ;)

In the crate! The puppy will probably be unsettled at first, but they really do learn to love it. Our dog LOVES her crate. It's like her bedroom and she whines if she can't open the door to go in. We have never regretted crate training her.

Congrats on the new "furbaby"!

Since you have a crate he/she(?) should sleep in it. I usually put the crate next to my bed for a few weeks until the pup feels safe and secure in it's new home and is sleepiong fairly well through the night. This way when it cries I could put my fingers through the openings and the pup could sniff, lick or lay against my hand until it went back to sleep.

You didn't say how old the pup is. If very young you WILL be getting up to go "potty" at some point....and if the crate is near you, you will be better able to know when the time is right.

Don't take out of the crate when crying or barking as this will give the idea "I bark, I get let out". Instead wait for even a split second of quiet and then take out.

Good luck and enjoy!

The puppy is 9 weeks old, and she has been crying. It broke my heart when she had to leave her mama, sisters, and brothers. I have a tension headache. I am so worried we are going to screw this up somehow.

Definitely in the crate! Make sure you set your alarm to wake up in the middle of the night so the puppy can go out.

What kind of puppy is it?

A PUG!!!!!!

Congrats on being a new pug mommy....

Being away from litter mates is tough. Follow everyones advice and crate train. Its the best option out there....

Also going to recommend a pug site for you to visit to tell you more and help you with these wonderful creatures..

Join that site. You can post pics, chat in the forum, and other stuff. If you need anything else, let me know...I am dealing right now with 2 almost 4mo olds...

If it will make you feel any better, my dog (a labrador) seemed positively heartbroken when we took her away from her parents and siblings. Howled and cried desperately. I felt horrible about it, but after a few days, she was right as rain. Hang in there. The first few days are a little bumpy, in my experience, but totally worth it!

Wherever you will feel the dog will be welcome always. We use the crate for one. She goes in and out freely now and always puts herself to bed (under the blanket we have in the crate) now that she's an "elder." The other jumps on top of the crate and sleeps at the foot of the bed.

Enjoy and don't cave in. Be consistent with whatever you do to train. Your baby will learn.:D

The crate beside your bed sounds like the best option.
With our dog, I eventually caved though, and she ended up in bed with me.

I am a big softy when it comes to my fur babies though.

We crate trained our golden. For the first few months he was in his crate any time we were gone or asleep. Luckily we got him in summer so I had time to potty train him. After a while we just put him in the crate while we were gone. He is almost 5 now and the crate is gone--he sleeps where he wants (spoiled!) and doesn't cause any trouble except the occasional chewed up toy. If I have rawhide bones handy that isn't even a problem. But that first year or two he would eat anything and needed to be in his crate while I was at work.

Oh how cute is that???

So, how did it go last night?

Recommending another site for you to check out. Great dog people there with lots of helpful info.Good Paws

She slept in her doggie bed in my daughter's room. Put up the hamster's playtime fence with her bed and some newspaper inside it. I didn't want her to roam around and get hurt. She acted scared of the crate. We are going to try that tonight. Just checked on her and she's still asleep. She is just adorable.

Update: She just woke up. Ate all her breakfast. Gave her just what the breeder said she should have, then my DD took her outside and she did her business- 1 and 2. Now she is investigating the house.

Can I just say..OMG HOW CUTE!!!! I almost want to run out and get a pug puppy....I said almost...lol. Good luck with the wee one and enjoy!
