Where should I go?

Take this quiz. It can be a big help.

I live in Union County NC. I LOVE it here!
The airport is about 25 minutes from me, and it is a major hub for US Airways. The city of Charlotte is about 15 minutes from me. I am able to attend professional and college sporting events all around me throughout the year, and they are all within minutes from my house. It is beautiful here! Plus we have the mountains to the west of us and the ocean/beaches to the east of us. WDW is about 8 hours away.

Awesome link! Spin-off thread coming in 3.. 2.. 1.. ;)

top 5 are:
Tuscon, AZ
Charleston, SC
Las Vegas, NV
Augusta, GA
Savannah, GA

I agree-- anywhere in the Charlotte area. We have an international airport, sports teams, and lots of water. The US Whitewater Center here is great.

Have you considered working in DC but living in Virginia? I can't speak from personal experience but my SIL25 and all her DF's moved to the DC area after college. It seems there are plenty of professional jobs in the region and the nightlife is jumping, not to mention all the restaurants ect. Fed jobs are, plainly, plentiful. My SIL just loves it there, doesn't drive and takes the train everywhere.

Personally, I'd go with NYC if I was young and single and live in Hoboken which is still THE place to be if you don't want to actually live in NYC. Again, lots of Fed jobs to choose from.

NC can get cold! So can SC, actually. Not often, but when it happens IMO it's worse than if you're living in a not-too-hot place, because it's such a big difference.

My brother and his wife love Durham, for example, but refuse to live there (once they were done with first their undergrad years, and later once she was done with law school (they'd moved back there for law school)). Moved to San Diego where it's just about perfect temperature all year long.

And my sis in law's sister lives in Asheville NC, and area always insisting on them visiting over winter...they HATE it b/c it's so cold there. Pick your area of NC carefully....

CA is a big state, ya know! (says the person who grew up there and doesn't really want to move back) :)

The more I look, the more I think Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina would be a good fit. I would like to avoid horrible traffic and have heard awful things about Atlanta.

I live south of Atlanta off I-85, and the traffic really isn't that bad down here. I can be at the airport in 25 minutes which is fantastic! We've been here 9 years, and I just love it.

CA housing prices have fallen dramatically, don't rule it out just yet, it's very possible you would be able to buy a great house. And Bumbershoot is right, the state is huge....you may not want to go back to where you were but you might find somewhere else that's awesome. :) Just saying.

Good luck with your search, let us know where you land. :)

We have been in Tucson, Arizona for two years. We relocated from New England. Tucson could not be more opposite in EVERY way from where we came from. It has taken a bit of getting used to, but we love it here.:cool1:

Let me ask you this: Do you like the heat? I mean REALLY like the heat?:rotfl: The summers here are extremely hot! However, from the end of September to the beginning of June, the weather is probably about the best you'll find anywhere. IMHO, anyway!

Heat doesn't bother me. I grew up outside of Oakland, CA and didn't mind days over 100. My main problem with Arizona is that if I request it, I might be sent to Southern Border, same with Southern California... So I would like to stay out of those places. Northern California is the exact place I refuse to go back to. So that limits my west coast to Las Vegas. After that comes Virginia, the Carolinas and Georgia.

I have to comment on what bumbershoot posted. I agree that it does get cold here. It does not, however, get as cold as places in the north. We do usually get at least one snow a year. However, here in our area (Charlotte area) it usually stays on the ground a day, maybe two, and then melts. Bumbershoot's family members live in Asheville. That is the foothills. Yes, that area and the NC mountains do get colder than we do in the piedmont area. They get more snow too. If you notice where we are located on a map, we are in the very southern part of NC, just above the SC line. That is why SC Minnie posted in agreement with me. We are that close to SC. Durham (Bumbershoot said that family members enjoy visiting there but feel it is too cold to live there) is farther north than us so they get a bit colder than us. I will not deny that we get cold temperatures here, but I do not consider our winters harsh at all. I like to say that I get to experience all four seasons, and I love that! I was born and raised in south Louisiana (just outside of Baton Rouge) until we moved because of DH's job in 2002. The weather here in NC is much better than what I experienced in Louisiana! There it seemed like it was always hot! So honestly, I enjoy the couple of months that we get some cold temperatures.

I love Savannah but never lived there. If you like tropical weather it's wonderful there.

Atlanta near the airport is a great alternative, also.

It must be so much fun to have to choose. I happen to LOVE where you are right now!! Some of my favorite trips were to the Virgin Islands, St. Croix being my favorite island to chill out at. :thumbsup2

How do I get a job like yours? ;)

I've heard great things about Nashville.

Someone mentioned DC but it's incredibly expensive and it gets COLD here! Not to mention our record over 80 inches of snow last winter...course it was a fluke that hardly ever happens!

Honestly, I know you said no cold, but Denver, CO is amazing! I lived there for 10 years and would LOVE to go back but unfortunately it probably won't happen. Yes it snows a lot. BUT there are over 320 days of sunshine a year, humid-less summers, and a lot more mild temps than you would think. Plus you can take up snowboarding or skiing! :thumbsup2

If I could choose anywhere in the country to go with your requirements, I'd choose Hawaii. At least for a little while. :goodvibes

I live in Florida and I love it, but if I had to move again, I'd move to Greensboro, NC. From the research I've done, it is an amazingly beautiful place to live. Urban, but not terribly so The weather is moderate. They have some cold, but not like the Midwest.

Sorry you're not coming back here. Be aware of the different types of "heat". That Southern humid hot is so hard on those of us who are used to the SF Bay Area's natural "air conditioning". Not sure how humid the tropics are. The desert heat is easier for me to take and I just melt in the humidity.

I watch some of those buying-a-house shows on HGTV and can't believe the housing prices in other parts of the country. In comparison, housing prices (near major metro areas) are still higher here.

Good luck! You can be an A's fan anywhere (as you well know!)

I plugged in my new address in Virginia when prompted and when asked about geographical preferences, I did not specify so that I could see their true suggestions.

#1 was Hampton, VA

The top 10 included Greenville, NC and SC and other places in the Carolinas and Virginia as well as Roswell, GA.

I would have liked if they asked about allergies though.

But it was very comforting that they feel VA to be a good fit.

I don't agree though with the Carolinas.
BTDT. While I do not require a metropolitan area...those are not states I would prefer.

I work as a fed in Agriculture. I deal with cargo coming off of planes/ships so really a major port/airport is my only location factor. I really get to put in a transfer and hope that in the next year I'll get to go somewhere. I am going to put in like 5-10 places and hope someone picks me up... it's not an exact science. I would think about Denver, but I hear that it is awful for single guys, while I have heard about the wonders of Charleston for single guys haha.
