Where is the best sushi?

Do NOT listen to anyone who tells you it's at the Kona Island Sushi Bar in the Polynesian. Theirs is okay, I liked it just fine, but I can get much better quality sushi at home ... and I live in the middle of the desert.

We've gotten it both at Kimonos at the Dolphin and at the lounge in Japan (the front of the building, facing the lagoon, have no idea what the incarnation is now). Japan was just about 10 years ago, Kimonos probably about 6-7.
Japan was great, but Kimonos was better. DH is very hyper about sushi quality and was impressed by both places but liked Kimonos for the selection and ambiance. It was also a great excuse to check out the Dolphin. :)

Wait a minute.

Tilly tells you where not to go, but doesn't say who has the best sushi on property.

Sky tells you about their experiences from 6-10 years ago?

Listen up, itrade, here's the rundown in order of quality:

1.) California Grill
2.) Kimono's
3.) Wolfgang Puck's Cafe
4.) Kona Island Sushi Bar
5.) Tokyo Dining/Yakitori House
6.) Sunshine Seasons et al. (refrigerated, pre-packaged rolls for quick-service pick-up)

Having said that, CG has the best rolls, but they are very expensive and the selection is limited. It's not a dedicated sushi joint unlike... Kimono's, which is the only true sushi place on-site. It does not participate in any dining plans, but it does have the largest selection and is comparable to 90% of any sushi place you will ever go to. The other mentioned spots serve sushi more as an appetizer, a gimmick or an after-thought. WPC does a pretty good job but nothing stellar. KISB is better than TillyMarigold makes it sound, and it's a good place to go if for no other reason than you can order sushi from their menu, an entree from Kona Cafe and the bread pudding (best dessert evuh!) from Ohana. That, alone, makes it one of the best deals going.

Anyway, you like sushi, so you're tops in my book. Wherever you go, enjoy. :)

I loved Kimonos - it was my first sushi experience in my life, 2 or 3 years ago, and it has never been the same for me....now I have to have sushi at least once a month...

"Best" is such an individual thing but I will say that the Spicy Kazan Roll at California Grill is to-die-for :cloud9::faint:

We personally enjoy the sushi at Kona Cafe. It is worth a try if you are near the Polynesian. This is where we usually stay. It is open to walk up without reservations which is a plus. They even went and got our kids uncrustables to eat while we were eating sushi. Everyone is going to have a different opinion. My husband is half asian so we eat sushi on a regular basis. We have always been happy with Kona.

A dedicated sushi place would be the best. DS's love sushi as much as DH and I do. Last time in Orlando we drove to a sushi place but it would be great if we could get it without the drive.

I had to chuckle when reading this post, because my daughter said the same thing when she got sushi from Kona this past week. She was disappointed that it wasn't as good as she expected it to be.

Thanks OP for posting and PP's for their opinions.

I am taking DS on a Graduation Celebration in May...and he LOVES Sushi!

So I got us ADR's at Cali Grill one evening...

I had never heard of Kimono's ...but we're staying at BC...so if we have a spare evening...maybe we'll walk over there... I suppose we CAN walk over there...

Any other faves at Cali Grill? I looked at the menu and it did look expensive...and the selection not so great...

But I'm glad PP's say it's good. I don't mind spending a bit extra...

DS & I tried to hit the #1 Sushi place in Orlando last year (tripadvisor.com)...but it was closed (MOnday of memorial day)...so we ended up at Ming Court Wok & Grill.

It was VERY different...but we did find some things we liked...

Hugs,
Mary

We just ate sushi at Kona and California grill. California Grill was awesome, We got the Malibu roll, OMG, we were fighting over it. Two nights later we walked up the the sushi bar at Kona. The sushi chef ( do they have a name?) was very nice and talkative, but the sushi was just OK and they substituted cucumber for avocado without checking with us because the avocado wasn't ripe. When I asked about it , they didn't charge us for the roll.

Well said Condorman! Thanks for posting!:wizard:

Hey Guys;

I just looked on allearsnet.com for Dolphin...and "Kimono's" isn't listed....do you know where I might find the menu?

ALLEARS must be outdated?

THanks a bunch,
Mary

Go to the Swan resort page on the main WDW website and go to the dining section and select Kimono. The menu is listed there. looks reasonablly prices for WDW anyway

My family and I have been to the Kona Island Sushi Bar a few times and think it's great, so that's what I would recommend and when we are back at WDW this August we will be going there again.

OKAY =

SO Kimono's is at the SWAN! NOT THE DOLPHIN !!!

Good info to have! I might try to switch Le Cellier to our Epcot day and save Kimono's for our "Resort" day...for BC.....

Hugs to all,

Mary

If you have a car, or don't mind walking from DTD, Benihana has an all you can eat Sushi deal, available on weeknights. Currently it is $26.95. The podcast crew, Kevin John and Corey have all spoken highly of it.

Excellent info! Can you tell me if CG offers any nigiri-zushi, or is it just rolls? Seaweed and I don't get along... :)

You've convinced me! :thumbsup2

I'm looking at the Disney restaurants website, and the page for Kimono's doesn't seem to have a way to book an ADR online. Do I call Disney Dining or the Swan directly to get a table?
