My daughter would like to do some pin trading again this trip. She has her pins, but is looking to invest in a new lanyard (specifically looking for Stitch). We gave her a Disney GC for Valentine's Day and she will probably get another one for Easter, so she would like to use these to buy her lanyard when we first get there. The first night we're there, we don't plan on going to the parks but to DTD (then early bedtime to be ready for rope drop the next day). Is there a place with a really good selection in DTD or should we wait until we're in the parks?

Thanks!

I would check out Disney's Pin Traders in DTD; it's across from Lego's and the monorail station. There is also a pretty good selection of pins and accessories in the World of Disney. I've mostly found that those two locations have pretty similar selection of items as the main pin shops in each park.

Thanks so much! I figured Disney's Pin Traders was the place to look. We were just at DLR in June, but pin trading didn't even cross her mind that trip. We did all of our start up buying when she was five at WDW (she's 14 now) and haven't shopped any more than to just add a pin or two since. I thought it would be fun to have a purpose to our outing to DTD our first night, but hated for her to be disappointed if there was a place with a better selection inside the parks.

If she can't find exactly what she's looking for there, ask a cast member. They might know if there are designs the park has that they don't, and they can tell you exactly where to go to get them.

Take a look on google as well, there are a number of Stitch/Lilo and Stitch themed lanyards and booster sets. If you see one she likes, you can save a screenshot on your phone or describe it to a cast member. I'm not sure all of them are available currently, but I'm sure other DISers would keep an eye out for you if they're going between now and your trip.

Some of the Disney lanyards are available as a starter set with 1-2 blind pins. I saw it offered at the music store on Main St before the refurbishment but haven't been back since to see if it's still there.

Thanks for the suggestion to check google. We had quickly looked before, but not too seriously (originally we were looking at handmade Stitch lanyards which there aren't many, if any). Now that we've looked, she's not really loving any of the actual Stitch lanyards, so we'll just go to DTD open minded instead of so focused on finding a specific lanyard.

Starter sets with blind pins? My daughter is a sucker for any blind box type of thing! If she's not set on something specific, she really loves surprises!

We have found some great pins trading in DTD too. You can find lots of CMs trading and lots of pin boards/stuffed animals around if she wants to do some trading that first day. WOD and Disney's Pin Traders have the most (some days we have seen boards/animals at about every register at WOD in addition to the CMs with lanyards), but you can find other spots to trade too. If she doesn't find a lanyard she likes that first night, try the pin store in Frontierland at DL. They should have a good selection. Are you staying at a Disney resort hotel on a package? One of the things we love about that is usually you get a coupon for each person to get a lanyard with a pin on it with your package documents. You can pick it up at Pin Traders in DTD or several other locations. When we went last summer the lanyards were 60th Anniversary lanyards and DD just loves that lanyard!

Interesting...I've seen the starter sets with blind pins and the blind boxes, but I don't recall seeing any lanyard sets with blind pins. I'll have to look for them on my next trip.

There's a sign that says if you buy any lanyard priced X you get 1 or 2 pins (I forgot if it's 1 or 2) for Y amount. It's not a package, just a deal they were offering. Of course the only lanyard I considered wasn't included in the deal.

That's great to know! This is our first long trip to DLR (always one or two day trips before), so we were thinking of extras that we would like to do that we usually skip over on our shorter trips. Pin trading was one (she hasn't really done it since our week long trip to WDW 9 years ago)... and since we're going over spring break, we thought it would be a good mid-day/busy time activity. It's nice to know that at those busy times, we could even leave the park and do our trading in DTD.

We're not staying at a Disney hotel, we're staying at the Sheraton since we could pay for the whole thing with my husband's points. That lanyard sounds really cool though! A 60th Anniversary one would be neat to have, I wonder if they sell them too.

She'll have so much fun pin trading! We get a boost of excitement every time we see a CM with a lanyard or pin pouch. I go by the philosophy of always making a trade. Even if there's nothing terribly interesting, I still make a trade and just swap one of mine that I'm only so-so on for a different so-so one.

I had great luck with the ladies at the Hungry Bear entrance during our last visit in December, each had multiple pins I was excited about.

This hadn't really crossed my mind until now, but has your daughter done any pin trading before? This is my kind basic answer to anyone that is looking to get into pin trading, but hasn't yet started trading. It's mostly just some things to keep in mind...

Pin trading can be a lot of fun, but it can also be very addictive and expensive! I love to trade pins and it's a major part of my trips to Disney, but I only trade with Cast Members.

How to Trade: Essentially, you purchase some pins (there are many options for where, how, etc.) and then take them with you. You'll see CMs that are wearing lanyards (either neck or hip) of varying colors (e.g., black, maroon, green/teal). The green/teal lanyards are for trading with children only. When you see a CM with a lanyard, you just go up to them and ask if you may look at their pins. If you see one you like, you offer to trade one of your pins for that pin. Aside from a few limitations, the CMs cannot refuse a trade.

The CMs can only refuse to trade if the pin you are offering is already on their lanyard (i.e., a duplicate), if the pin is not in good condition (i.e., scratched image, broken, etc.), not a Disney pin (no Disney copyright on the back), or not a pin (i.e., buttons cannot be traded). For the CMs, they only have to trade the pins on their lanyards, so any service pins that they might be wearing on their costume or nametags are not for trading.

Disney has published some guidelines:
http://disney.go.com/eventservices/howtopintrade.pdf

In addition to the neck or hip lanyards that CMs may be wearing, you may also find pin boards, books, or other objects (e.g., I’ve seen a life preserver at OKW ). Those can have lots pins to look at. The trading rules are the same, as with the CM lanyards. Some boards/books/objects are out at all times, but others may only come out at certain times.

In terms of the CMs that wear lanyards, look in the shops, at the ride entrances, janitorial, management, and (sometimes) security. The ride operators and loaders tend not to have lanyards.

Costs: Pin trading can be very expensive, especially if you buy pins after you get to Disney. Disney sells individual pins (don't buy these for trading – they’re very expensive) and starter/booster sets. Starter/Booster sets are usually sets of 7 or so pins for about $30. If you run out of pins or decide to start trading after you've arrived, booster/starter sets are your best bet. Other sources include the Disney Stores, Disney Outlets, and the DisneyStore.com. I would keep an eye on the DisneyStore.com's clearance section for good deals. You can also buy pins on eBay or non-Disney sites, but be careful. Those can often be scrappers/ counterfeits /fakes, especially if they're super cheap (e.g., less than a few dollars per pin).

Caveats: there are a few other things worth noting about trading. The first are the "professional" traders and the second are "scrappers".

Professional Traders: My advice is to be wary of the professional pin traders. These are the non-CM traders that are sometimes found outside of the store in Tomorrowland, Frontierland, and over in DTD (they might be elsewhere, but that's where I've seen them). These folks do not have to trade with you nor do they have to adhere to the Disney trading guidelines (e.g., one pin for one pin). I'm sure some of them are nice folks, but I would be cautious when approaching them for a trade because for many of them this is a business so they're out to get the most valuable/expensive pins possible from you. So if they will trade your pin for their pins, that's probably fine. If they ask you go buy a pin or pins for them, I'd walk away. If you're new to pin trading and do not have a sense of the value (in terms of dollars) of the various pins, I'd avoid the professional traders.

Scrappers, Counterfeits, and Fakes: The second issue is scrappers, counterfeits, and fakes. For some folks this matters, for others it does not. You'll need to decide which camp you are in before you get heavily into pin trading. To the average pin trader, I don't think the difference between a scraper, fake, or counterfeit really matters (because none of these are legitimate pins), but there are slight differences.
  • A scrapper is a pin that looks legitimate, but is not. It can be a factory overrun (i.e., the factory was contracted to make 1 million, but they made 1.1 million instead) or a pin that has some kind of error that should have been "scrapped".
  • A counterfeit pin is a copy of legitimate pin made by someone that was not authorized by Disney.
  • A fake is a pin design that was never authorized by Disney.
Unfortunately, it's not always easy to tell what pin designs are fake unless you know a lot about pins and what designs have been released. These pins can often look like legitimate designs and may contain all of the markings (e.g., copy right) to look legitimate, but they are not. Luckily, I tend to think that outright fakes are the least common type of non-legitimate pins out there.

In terms of the scrapers/counterfeits, those are harder to distinguish the legitimate from non-legitimate. You'll often be able to tell a scrapper/counterfeit because the colors are weird/off, elements are missing or incorrect, or the back stamp (the copy right) is wrong/missing/damaged. Others say you can tell because they feel "rough" or the edges are sharp/pronounced. Sadly, there is no sure fire way to tell a scrapper/counterfeit. My guess is that it’s easier to identify the counterfeits and the scrappers that should have been “scrapped”. The factory over-runs probably look exactly like the ones shipped to Disney, so those are nearly impossible to distinguish once they’re in circulation.

It's worth noting that if you do end up trading with CM, the CM lanyards tend to be filled with scrappers, counterfeits, and (to a less extent) fakes. So if you really dislike scrappers/counterfeit, I would avoid trading with CMs. That's the crux of the argument: those that dislike scrappers/counterfeits feel they cheapen the trading and make it not worthwhile. Those that don't care, tend to say that they like the pin, so it doesn't really matter if it's a scrapper/counterfeit or not (they also say that if you can't tell, does it really matter?). Both points are valid.

eBay: eBay is a popular source for pins, but it can be a tough place to buy legitimate (i.e., non-scrapper/counterfeits/fake) pins. The general rule of thumb is that you buy a "lot" of pins (e.g., 25-pins) and the price per pin is less than a couple of dollars each, you're likely buying scrappers. Also, if you buy pins that come in little baggies (instead of pin cards like the ones you see at the stores in WDW/DLR), those are more likely to be scrappers as well. My recommendation is to look for sellers that are selling pins still on their backing and/or unopened booster sets (also still on their cardboard backing wrapped in plastic). In truth, unless you only buy from Disney directly, it is hard to say whether you'll get scrappers/counterfeits/fakes or not.

THIS is what plagues me at the moment. The only time we truly did pin trading was at WDW probably 9 years ago and we started with starter sets we bought in the parks. Never even occurred to me at that time that there would be non-legit pins out there.

Actually, it didn't even occur to me until I started poking around about a month ago reading blogs about things to do at DLR. One blog I read talked about how great it was for her kids to pin trade with the bulk set she got off of ebay. I was intrigued, so I looked into it and found out about scrappers, counterfeits and fakes. Ugh. We're casual traders, not looking for some exclusive limited edition rare pin, more collecting character/designs we like... so my daughter wouldn't care if she got a scrapper, etc. if she liked the design. So, I'm trying to let it go. At times like this I have to back off and look at the $$ invested, as invested not in the actual product but in the activity itself. Getting non-equivalent pins in trades is easier to swallow when I can step back and see the joy that making trades has brought us over the course of our trip.

We're really excited! She was so little last time she did trading that she doesn't really remember it and her collection from then was pretty random! This time, since this is our second mother/daughter DLR trip in a year, we're going to try to collect pins that remind us of our trip so we can have a lanyard of memories! But she does have a weakness for Stitch, so we'll see what we end up with :-)

Have you set aside money to buy some pins to remind you of the trip? You're pretty much going to see the same pins on the boards and CM lanyards after the first day. Sometimes you can get a little variety by trading first thing in the morning, but then it's a trade-off where you sacrifice the good park hours. You're probably going to see a lot of the orange bird and 2012 Mickey ears. You might want to subtly set an appropriate level of expectation for DL specific pins.

I can't guarantee this is still happening, but there has been a short pin trading event in the GCH lobby 4:15 to 4:45 daily (and also PPH and DLH).
The CMs at these events are managers and other senior staff at the hotels, allowing them to get out from their offices and casually interact with guests.

OP, I saw a Stitch lanyard yesterday in the pin store on Main St, so they do exist. It was a double width one, and was double sided with Stitch on one side and Lilo and Stitch on the other. Then in the store in Frontierland I saw starter set with 4 Lilo and Stitch pins. The lanyard is single width and has symbols on it, but no characters.

Thanks so much for this information! The double width one sounds like something she might like (I googled it and found an image)... we'll keep an eye out for that one. The starter set would be tough to pass up with the pins, but I think she would really like Stitch to be on the lanyard itself like the first one you mentioned.

And to your previous post... she's been collecting Disney GC so she can buy specific pins too! We're not necessarily on the hunt for DLR specific pins though, more for ones that remind us of special things from our trip. For example, she's desperate to ride Alice in Wonderland this year since we missed it last year, so any Alice in Wonderland related pin we might find would be welcomed into her collection. So a general pin that would have a specific meaning to us, if that makes sense.
