You most surely can..But by taxi..We did this on two separate occasions. It was approximately 6$ each per person/each way..Worked out to be so worth it. We could come back to the ship when we wanted.

We never felt anything less than safe. There are beach vendors, but if you do not want anything, you must be nice, but firm..If you find the search feature, you can find the post popular beaches for each destination.

We did Magan's beach in St. Thomas...Gorgeous, not too far, and kids loved it...

In Sint Maarten, there's a beach right in downtown Philipsburg. It's within walking distance of the cruise ship docks, or a quick and cheap water taxi ride! Lots of people around, seems very safe.

(There are lots of other beaches, too. But this way you can beach a little and shop a little, all in one place! )

My DD and I caught a taxi and went to Coral World/Coki Beach while DH played golf. The only cost was the entrance fee to Coral World, and I paid $5 to rent the lounge chair. The beach was beautiful. Taxi was $7 per person, each way.

Great Bay Beach. The water taxi costs $5 per adult (kids under 12 - I think) are free. You get a wristband and can ride the water taxi all day. You can see the ship from the beach, and it's an easy trip back if you want to go back for a break or lunch, etc.

We rented two beach chairs with an umbrella for the day for $10. It came with two free drinks and use of their facilities (which were no more than a yucky bathroom - but at least there was a place to go).

There is a water trampoline there and jet ski rentals available. DH and I each took a turn with one kid to do a little shopping in town.

There are also taxi stands right where you get off the ship which will take you to which ever beach on St. Maarten you want to go.

On St. Thomas we went to St. John on our own.

I'm with Mickeyboat. Great Bay beach was great. Very convenient and had everything you need. You can then use the all day one price water taxi to go back to the ship to shower, change and have lunch and then come back to do a little shopping. We had a great time there.
