Sorry, urban legend, it is not the center of Disneyland. Its a survey marker and there are several of them around the park.

I think it used to be before Toontown was built... At least, that's how I understand it.

Something gets posted on enough websites and in books and everyone takes it as fact.

Check out this aerial map of DL in 1956. The exact center would be more towards the end of Main Street. I'm even leaning towards the Adventureland entrance since the Rivers of America go so far off to the left.
