After years of WDW vacations, (per DH  ) I REALLY NEED some ideas of somewhere else to visit. It must be in the U.S. (I don't fly) and have lots of planning potential (I'm an obsessive planner) and entertainment. Any ideas. I appreciate any help or links to places that might rival my WDW memories.
Thanks so much.

no where
lol
just kidding :rotfl2:
well what do you like to do
fall iscoming new england is lovely
apple picking, leaves turning colors, stuff like that
ski season will be here before you know it

My second favorite to Disney is Las Vegas. Lots to do, even if you don't gamble (we didn't much at all). LOTS of entertainment, lots of planning potential. If I could tear myself away from Disney once, that's where I'd go. Otherwise New York, or Los Angeles. Vegas would be my first choice though.

If you have kids, Wisconsin Dells is nice. Have indoor waterparks, Tommy Bartlett Robot World museum. In the summer, outdoor waterparks.

If you don't have kids, an alternative from Vegas is the Poconos. They have alot of entertainment for adults ie. musicians, stand-up comedians. The suites are romantic. Nice to go in the Fall or winter(skiing). Also nice in the summer.

I second Wisconsin Dells too! Especially if you have kids, but even if you don't depending on the kinds of things you like to do.

there is a place to vacation other then Disney ?? :earseek: :faint:

Where are you located?

There is so much to do in North America:

Grand Canyon
The rest of our National Parks
Disneyland
San Diego
Las Vegas
San Francisco
Washington DC
New York
New England

In Canada (you can drive)

British Columbia
Nova Scotia and the Cabot Trail
New Brunswick

Mexico

If you're a sports fan, visit the hall of fames. Or visit all of the MLB stadiums. I've been trying to convince my DH that we should do the latter for awhile.

I second the Florida Keys! There is something there for everyone. The drive down there from the Miami area, though slow and sometimes grueling if the traffic backs up, is absolutely breathtaking--I think it is something every American should do at least once in their life.
If you are outdoorsy/active you could do a lot of water sports or nature hiking. There are great relaxing day/dinner cruises available. If you are a shopper there's plenty of that available. Tons of delicoius restaurants. An array of historical sites and museums. And plenty of very colorful characters to make people-watching very entertaining! It's just such a unique area that I think it is a wonderful choice for a vacation. OTOH if you live too far away the drive could be too much (and passing WDW without stopping could be painful!) but if you live within a reasonable driving distance I would definitely recommend it.

camping or lodges in colorado, yellowstone in wyoming or glacier in montana, idaho rocky mountain ranch, idaho all our breathtaking spots with fun outdoor activities at the many state & national parks.
san francisco, san diego, carmel in california.
las vegas, nevada tons of shows & entertainment.
the abbey, lake geneva or the dells in wisconsin.
washington dc museums, history, do the night tour of the buildings all lite up.
key west, marco island, florida
charlestown, sc with its mansions & southern charm.
new york & manhattan, new york city.
winnetu resort, marthas vineyard, massachusetts for relaxing.

Dh and I really, really love Toronto. He's a bluejays fan (there are other teams there) and they have wonderful shows (we saw the Lion King...I cried), comedy, shopping, the CN tower, great dining, cruises, museums, an amusement park, a zoo...etc without walking far. We plan on taking our 2 DD's next year (who will be 3 and 1) and having a great time!!!
Wow, do you think we love Toronto???

Good luck.

Since you are driving, a tour of the Blackhills, Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Grand Tetons, etc. would be one suggestion. I also like San Diego. Driving up the California coastline is suppose to be a great trip. Seattle/Portland with a detour into Canada is beautiful. I could spend weeks in Washington DC and not see everything, especially the Smithsonian. If you golf, Myrtle Beach or the Robert Trent Jones trail in Alabama, etc.

Our next family trip in October 2006 is to California. Starting in San Francisco and spending 10 days making our way down to San Diego. :goodvibes California has so much to offer families....I can't wait!

:rotfl: :rotfl: DH keeps asking to go there -
and instead I make plans for something else!
JUST yesturday I finally said yes - next year we can go to Wisconsin (and he wants to hit Miline Illinois as him and DS are HUGE John Deere Fanatics!

another fun place is http://www.pinegrove-ranch.com/ (DH wouldn't even TOUCH a horse - but still had fun with all the other activities! and DS was too little and still had a good time!)
and www.smugglersnotch.com
There are tons of things to do in the White Mountains area too
Rent a houseboat on Lake Powell - go to Vegas
Rent a house on a lake or the ocean for a week!
What is the composition of your family - makes a BIG diffrence !
:)
Hate to tellya to bring the kiddos to Vegas - or to go to Storyland without kids!

Wow!!! You guys are the best, I think I could cry. I realize I can't keep planning WDW trips and you've given me GREAT ideas. I think I'll begin with Vegas, kind of wean gradually from the entertainment factor (moving ever so carefully back to changing leaves). I used to like that a lot, but WDW has spoiled me with 24/7 entertainment from the beautiful hotels to the fireworks... I digress... The Toronto idea appeals to me also and DC someone said has a lot to do. A year from now I should be able to enjoy once again beautiful leaves and then the Florida Keys. *The following year it's my turn to plan another WDW trip!!* Now I know why people in planning sometimes bail and come over here for awhile, you people are so friendly and helpful. DH and I have been "empty nesters" for about 3 years and still it doesn't feel good. Maybe when or if we have grand children it'll be better. He wants to fish and see nature, I've just held him up always trying to find that perfect viewing spot for Spectro! :wizard:

Thanks Again.
