Where Else Do You Vacation?

I'm probably in the minority here because we haven't been to WDW since 1999!! We no longer go anywhere that would require boarding our "baby"...Winnie, our bulldog. We bought at RV 2 years ago and we are working our way around the East Coast. We especially love Maine. In March we are going to Hilton Head and Savannah. Cape May is a fav. of mine too.

I know the feeling, we have a pug we hate to leave, we were supposed to go to WDW in January but ended up at Universal because we didn't want to leave the dog. All the Universal hotels take pets. This is totally

but I wish Disney would have a pet friendly hotel. We are going for a few days in November (for a very short stay) but we have family that will take "Ralphie". BTW, just went to Savannah last spring and it was great, also love Cape May!!:beach:

We love Disney, but I am looking for other good vacations for the family. I'm thinking outside of Florida. What other great vacations do the members here take?

My kids are 6 and 7. We will be visiting Mount Vernon, Williamsburg and Jamestown in Virginia next summer and likely Pennsylvania. I love Disney, but I'm ready to take the kids around the country. Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Mesa Verde, Grand Canyonon are likely all in the next couple years.

Any ideas for an "On Golden Pond" like vacation? Cabin on a wooded lake in the middle of nowhere?

Thanks.

From the start I had a list of places I wanted to take the kids before they graduate. Places we have taken them are: Ireland, England, Spain, Morocco, Girlbraltar, FLORIDA (more times then I can count).
As they grow the time with them is becoming less.
The rest of the list goes like this- California and Nevada (both are already booked for this summer). We want to take them to France and Italy and Hawaii and Boston, I find Washington, DC important, but I have taken them for day trips. So we figured they will be well traveled by the time they graduate. Right now they are in 8th and 9th grade. Like I said, our summers are sadly almost over until they are grown up.
The list could go on forever, because I keep thinking of more and more I want to do with them. If only time could slow down and they can stay younger a bit longer and we could have more summers before they graduate.

Isn't that the truth! I'm reading this thread which is listing incredible places to visit as a family and I'm thinking the same thing. Between DS16 working and his swim team, and DD's band camp (which consumes a large part of the summer), I'm thinking we'll never get to some of these places. Once they hit high school, the time is so limited for family vacations. :guilty:

So many great places to go!! We love to cruise. They treat you like royalty on the ship. Well, maybe not quite that good, but still really really good!! Tons of stuff to do for adults and kids of all ages. Lots of islands to go to and explore and experience. Plus, you can get some good deals because it includes everything except drinks.

In the US there is also tons to do.

-Niagara Falls

-White Mountains in New Hampshire
-Civil war sites
-Amish country in PA

Cancun for All Inclusives and not too much $$$

But I wouldn't suggest Las Vegas right now for your kids and their ages. It's NOT family friendly in any sense of the word.

We hit there on the way down and back to Disneyland and our kids *13, 11 and 7* think it's cool for an hour or so but then they want to leave.

They tried for years to make it seem family friendly and it just isn't *In our opinion* and we as adults go there a lot and at least once with the kids on the drive to DL.

We cruise every year and try to go to the U.K. once a year also. We haven't been able to fit in WDW for several years now. Our DS18 wants to go so maybe we'll go within the next couple of years. There's a great big world out there. LOL

How are you doing Italy, Austria, Germany, and France? Are you renting a car? Using Eurail? We are going soon and I have no idea how we are going to get around. (children are 3 and 7)
Alaska is wonderful. I hope to move back there someday.
When are you going to Kenya? DD3 is too young for the malaria meds so we are unable to go. We were supposed to be there this week.
We have lived in Egypt for one month now, so we've been doing a bit of sightseeing here and will continue throughout the year.

BriarMom, We haven't hammered out all the details yet. But we are flying into Venice, where we will get around by public transportation. Staying there 5 nights and taking the train to Florence where we will meet up with my family and head to Lucca. We rented a farmhouse in Lucca (the town where my grandparents are from) as a Christmas gift to my parents and siblings. We will have a car for exploring but will probably use the train for visiting nearby Florence, Pisa and Cinqueterre. After Lucca my dh wants to drive (I want to take a train) up through parts of Austria and Germany staying only a few nights. Then we will take an overnight train from Munich to Paris. We rented an apartment in Paris for one week, and plan on using the train to daytrip to Versailles. We fly home out of Paris. We're taking th "slow" tour spending more time at places then other people might to help ease the kids into each place and allow us plenty of time to see what we want and still indulge their schedules and the things they find interesting.

No the kids aren't going with me to Kenya (although I've never heard the malaria thing for young kids). When I'm there (I was also there this past summer) I work at a feeding/education program for AIDS orphans and with a high school that helps kids who can't afford tuition at other schools. The kids have to be a bit older to come be a part of that, although I do plan on bringing them. Where in Kenya were you planning on going? I go to Kijabe which is on the Rift Valley and is above the elevation of malaria mosquitos, so I don't need malaria meds (I did still need 11 shots). When I went on safari to the Masai Mara, I did need the malaria meds. Kenya is awesome though. I highly recommend it if you can go sometime. Just be careful on the roads.

I live in Northern MI and there are tons of lakes and tons of cabins. And I sure feel like it's the middle of nowhere. lol So you should look into MI.

We took the kids to Niagara Falls summer of '05. They loved it. (btw, I have 4 kids ages 11, 9, 6 and 6)
This last summer '06, we went to CA to visit family and hit Disneyland, Universal Studios and also drove to Vegas.

I think Vegas can be a fun place for kids, if they aren't too sheltered cause there are billboards with half naked woman after all. ;)

We've also done Grand Canyon in the past.

As much as I love Disney there are so many other wonderful places for the kids to see out there. It's nice to see other things once in awhile.

Vacation?

Huh! Hmm.

Let's see....

Vacation?

Uhhhh....

Hmmm.

We went to a convention a few times. Does that count?

No?

Oh, I know - we went up to northern Wisconsin for a weekend once. No, we didn't take any time off. We just left Friday after work, and came back home by Sunday evening.

That doesn't count either?

How 'bout visiting relatives out-of-state? What's that? Only if we did something fun like a theme park or whitewater rafting while we were there, rather than just sitting around the house, talking, eating, and watching TV? Well, no, we didn't do anything vacation-ey. Just visiting.

Well, then, now that you put it that way, it seems DW and I haven't had a vacation together since . . . well, since ever! (We've been together for 14 years.)

Sad, but true.

We love Disney but as a couple (no kids yet) we also enjoy seeing and doing other things. We enjoy resorts in the Caribbean and Mexico as well as cruising for big vacations. We are hoping to vacation in Hawaii in the near future!

Six Flags is always a fun place for my family. However I actually enjoy going to places like Puerto Vallarta so I can see family members who I haven't seen in a long time. USA is great and all, but sometimes it's nice to get out of the country for awhile.

We have done a cruise and gone to Las Vegas. We probably will be going to Vegas this year as two of our boys will be busy with college or work and won't be joining us on our usual annual trip to WDW.

Love Disney...been other places...but I'm very excited because I'm planning my first trip to England!!! Always wanted to go and having been able to yet, planning for August of 07. WoHoo!

Our favorite place to go is Beaches Turks and Caicos. It's an all inclusive resort in the Caribbean that allows children. We haven't taken our kids yet because our youngest is a bit too young. We've been there 3 times just the two of us. It's beautiful there, crystal clear turquoise water that is so calm it's like glass. My hubby scuba dives, we snorkel, basically we relax on the beach all day taking breaks to eat. It's awesome!!!
