Where else can we visit from New York?

Hi everyone long time no post,

We are booked to go to New York in June and will be there for two weeks. We have been to New York before so ideally we would like to spend around a week in New York and visit somewhere else for a little while and I was wondering if anyone can advise nearby places that are nice to visit (beaches or Boston, DC etc). It will be strange not getting our Disney fix next year but we want to make the most of visiting somewhere outside of Florida!

Although, I might be looking into a cheapie to DLP! Don't know if I can go a year without seeing a castle and Tinkerbell fly .

I live 150 miles north of New York City. (My son works in TV production in NYC, although he's currenlty in Greece.) My husband and I went down to NYC a couple weeks ago and for the first time ever did the double decker bus tours. Very interesting. Not cheap, but a great way to see and learn about the city and you can get on or off throughout the ride so it beats the bus or walking.

I don't know if you have young kids, but Sesame Place near Philadelphia is great. It's definitely geared to younger kids, but has great play areas and a water park. You can check out their website www.sesameplace.com.

New Jersey has a lot of great beaches. We like Ocean City, near the southern tip of New Jersey. It has a fabulous beach, lots to do on the boardwalk, and just to let you know the city is "dry" (no alcohol is sold or served there). Just north of Ocean City is Atlantic City which is much more famous, has casinos and more nighttime entertainment.

If you want to head in the other direction, Newport, Rhode Island is home to many amazing mansions, and once again has beautiful beaches and lots of touristy things to do.

In June you'll probably be beating the peak of the summer season/tourists. Here in upstate New York schools don't let out until the third week of June.

Thanks so much . No, no kids but I did love Sesame Street as a kid! A "dry" city sounds like heaven to me, I live in the UK's equivalent to Atlantic city so it will be Ocean City for us I would think. You've given me a good few options to consider, will look into them. Great to beat the crowds too but I am hoping we will get to see some free concerts in the parks with it being June.

We have done dc from NYC a good few times the drive is about 3 and a half hours we stay by dulles airport as with a car its cheaper no parking fees lol we stay in Herndon, Virginia we have only ever stayed in DC once. Also the jersey shore is beautiful about an hour from NYC. I have never done boston but plan to one day as I hear its beautiful

I was also going to say DC.

I've also seen day trips (or longer) to Niagara Falls. If we were there longer in March I'd really want to do that!

Just remembered as well I've seen day tours to Atlantic City also.

I agree that Washington, DC is an impressive city. You'll be surprised at how small the White House (president's residence) is. The nice thing about Washington is that once you get there you can walk everywhere -- good practice for your next Disney trip.

Niagara Falls is a l-o-n-g drive from New York City, but if you go they say the Canadian side is more impressive. I've done both and would have to agree. Plus, if you've never been to Canada before you can add another country to your list of places you've visited.

I think we would probably get a train, if that is possible? I have only briefly stopped in Gander, Canada for re-fueling and I have always wanted to visit Canada. Unfortunately, my parents don't seem as enthusiastic about it as me .

I just checked Amtrak (the rail line that runs from NYC to Niagara Falls). It's doable, but a nine hour train ride. Ugh. Upstate New York (which is where I live) isn't so beautiful or remarkable that you need nine hours to see it.

Thanks so much for checking that out for me . Nine hours ! It takes less time to get from the UK to Orlando than that .

I visited both New York and Boston last year. Personally I wouldn't want to go to Boston just as a day trip from NY, it's a long way and is really worth an overnight stay (at least!) on it's own It's a great city, I enjoyed it more than NY! Haven't been to DC but would love to, hoping to combine it with my next Orlando trip. My boyfriend is going to NY over New Year and I think they're visiting Philadelphia (PA) for the day, another interesting looking city I think

We've are visiting NY next year. We are planning 6 days in NY at the start of our trip, four days in Boston at the end, and we have four days in the middle to do "other things".

One of these "other things" has been Niagara. There are organised trips for a day (flying) or 2 days (by coach). I have seen these advertised with Viator (and other tor operators) for around $450/$260 respectively. However, you can also look into pulling together your own trip by plane - Jet Blue fly from JFK to Buffalo Airport several times a day, from where you can get a bus/taxi to the Falls area.

Scehdules/fares have just been released through to September 2011, so may be worth keeping an eye on fares.

Our other option is to spend some time on the beaches of New England before we visit Boston.
