Do you go to the Walmarts, Meijers and targets, or do you go to halloween USA? We got a coupon for 5 off of 25 dollar purchase, with 2 costumes we would meet that. Just wondering what everyone else does. We will most likely be super heros.

i got my daughter a 50's girl costume at wal-mart (shirt & poodle skirt). i couldn't find anything anywhere else that wasn't so short you could see butt cheeks. i have come to believe that costume makers think all tween/teen girls want to dress like hookers.

We go to Goodwill, actually, although we haven't done a proper Halloween yet (my daughter is still pretty young) so it's mostly just getting dress up clothes. This year we've looked at Oriental Trading (they sell complete costumes as well as costume parts for pretty cheap) and places like Michaels and Five Below for pieces of costumes. TJmaxx/Marshalls both have a variety of costumes right now.

In the end, we're going to a local toy store for a chef's hat and jacket that's good enough quality to last through the year. She loves Ratatouille and she has a gray stuffed rat from IKEA, so she's going to our Halloween party as a cook. I'm going to take a page out of Addam's Family, dress pretty much normal (or like a teenage girl) and say "I'm a vampire, we look like everyone else."

We've been making our halloween costumes for the past few years. This year I spent more than I should have on putting them together, but I've discovered the joys of stitch witchery, the coolest thing ever created.
We either use clothes we already have, or go to Goodwill to find things that will work.

We went as Kingdom Hearts characters, (sora's was bought online) I made the King Mickey and Roxas costumes.

I remembered Party City mailed coupons so the other day I took my DD's, good thing as they were to expire that day. We got two costumes with a total of $20 discount! DD11 is Little Red Riding Hood got it for $25 and DD8 is a Spanish flamenco dancer:) got that for $15

Momof1princess: I totally agree, my DD11 had to get a plus size! She had tried on some costumes that were tween size and like you said, her cheeks were exposed *horror*

i know exactly what you mean-i've been through countless websites and catalogs looking for a costume for DD, and the costumes either allowed her behind to hang out or were $50-$60, and i have a policy i pay no more than $30. i got the 50's girl costume at wal-mart for $20, and she liked it, so we're all set. my DD is 12 and had to get the small teen costume. congrats on the great deals! make sure you post pics-i'd love to see red and the flamenco dancer together, i bet they'll be a pair, lol.

I always get sucked into the Disney Store. :confused3 I can't stay away!

I now have a Minnie Mouse, Tinkerbell and Belle costume from my DD's past Halloweens. (Belle is for this year). I've only avoided the DS twice, once when she was first born (and I was broke) and last year when she wanted to be a cowgirl. I was lucky that no cowgirls suits were to be found at the DS!

I guess the good thing is that they are appropriate for her age group (almost 5) :goodvibes

We make, we I had made our costumes, my girls are too old for the Disney Store costumes :( they're tween and teen and all the costumes either are for little girls or babies and for the older girls are just not appropriate, too hoochie mama  so we get some patterns and cheap fabric from wal mart or hobby lobby. We had so much fun making them

It depends on the age of the child and the costume the child wants. For example, when my DD was little, I would just go to Wal Mart and get her a costume off the rack for $9.99. Once she got a little older and got choosy, I would take her to Party City (with a coupon, of course) except one time when she wanted to be a witch and I got her one at Wal Mart.

We went to Halloween City yesterday and they seemed very pricey. The costume my daughter wanted was $29.99. At Party City, the exact same costume (same manufacturer and all) was $24.99 minus the $5 coupon, so I saved $10 on it. I think Halloween City has to charge 1/3 more because they HAVE to make their money at Halloween time whereas Party City is open all year round and focuses on all sorts of parties/events, not just costumes.

I end going in all kinds of directions with the kids costumes. It all depends upon what they want to be and they are very determined on their choices.

Hand me downs are always a hit with my wallet but not always a success with the kids.

I've also done e-bay and hand-made (Ever try to find a Knight in Shining Armor???- Oigh!)

I got a really really cute dinosaur costume from Land's End that I turned into a dragon for youngest DS to wear as companion for the Knight- I sold this cosume on e-bay for 7x what I paid for it - crazy

And know they're expensive but for several years I have bought Gymboree costumes. The quality on these is amazing so resale on them is ridiculously good. Last year youngest DS wore their vampire costume. I bought it for $34 on sale and sold it for $32.07 last week :thumbsup2 Even factoring in my fees on e-bay I can't beat less than $5 for a costume of that quality. Three years ago I bought the fireman costume. Youngest DS wore it for two halloweens. I sold it for $10 more than I paid for it.

This year they didn't want to wear anything from there so I ended up going thru Costume Express. Not cheap but I'm hoping they will hold up well.
