Where Do I Begin??

I'd really like to try my hand at some basic designing and have no idea where to even begin. Is there a basic tutorial or 'run down' on what to do? I don't have any fancy photo editing program on my computer, but do have Photoimpressions 4 and have Powerpoint on my laptop.

What I'm really trying to do is to make some journal pages for Disneyland. I just have no clue where to start. Can anyone point me in the right direction??

I have only ever used Photoshop Elements for designing so I can't help with any other program. Wish I could. I know some people create some pretty great stuff in Word, etc.
