Where can I down load my Digital Camera?

Last time we went to DW we had just gotten our digital camera and didn't know a whole lot about it. We filled the 256 chip in nothing flat. I ended up paying $20 to get it put on a disc. We were so nervous that it wouldn't work right. Now we go to Costco and have pics done and a disk made for $1.99. Where can we go that is cheap but also reliable to have our chip downloaded to a disk when we fill it up? We will have a car and we are staying at POR.

Thanks, YO

We have a portable media player that we take that accepts the memory card and you download it and then reuse your card. It basically is a portable hard drive. It is small (about 5" x 8") so you can take it to the parks with you and then download your pictures through the day. We have a 20GB model but you can get them I believe all the way up to 80 GB. You can download music and videos to them also. We download Disney movies to them and the kids watch them on the plane on the way. They run anywhere from $300 to $800 I think, but may save you time and money in the long run if you have to keep going and putting digital pics on disk. I have the "Archos 420 av" model, but another brand is called "Smartdisk silver." I suggest going on either buy.com or nextag.com and putting in the search portable media player, or archos 420 av or Smartdisk silver 40gb. Just make sure you check the compatibility of the media player with your digital camera. You can do this through the specifications page of website. Hope this helps. I believe this will be much cheaper in the long run than either buying more memory cards or putting them on disks plus you can listen to music and watch movies on them. By the way, when you get home you just download them to your computer via a usb cord. Let me know if you have any questions regarding this. :)

I'm not sure where you can download them, but I just went and bought an additional card to take...then I don't have to worry about downloading pix until I get home. I think it was like $60 or $70 for the one that is 4x the size of the 256... just a less expensive alternative? :)

bahogg,
Thanks for the info on the portabel media player, I'm not that technical :)

lindakmonty,
I looked into getting another chip but I don't really have another need for one except this kind of trip, which doesn't happen that often :guilty:
wish it did.

I am just wondering if any of the walgreens down there do it or if, there is a Costco down there where I could take it in and have it put on a disc and then erase my chip, without having to spend a fortune :confused3

Thanks, YO

since you are gonna have a car, on international drive there is a walgreens or rite aid i dont remember. there should be plenty of places to have it done

That was my easy fix :) I bought a 6gb card @ best buy and after the rebate it was only $119 so I can take thousands of pix and never worry about memory :) but I really don't take a ton of pix except on vacation either.

edited to add:
Yes... I have other "back up" cards just in case...but CHARGE THE BATTERY as well.... our last trip...I bought a new camera...a few cards... 2-256,1-128 and 32 came w/it...but we went on the cruise 7 nights got lots of great pix...got to wdw after the cruise and start taking pix on the safari and wouldn't you know it.... my battery went dead! UHHH I won't make that mistake this time:)

Trust me, buy another card. I wouldn't suggest a real high card incase it were to fail. You can buy 4/5 smaller cards for the same price as a big one. If the big one fails, you don't have anything to fall back on. With 4/5 smaller ones, you have plenty of backup (or spares).

I had my first digital camera for our 2003 trip. It was the first trip for DH and DD. Within 30 minutes of being at AK, my card failed. I was so upset. It was during the lion king show. After the show, I had to purchase a disposable for the rest of the day. NOT GOOD...and EXPENSIVE. I know have 3 cards, (2) 1gb and (1) 32mb-this one came with my camera. I take them with me everywhere incase one card fails, I have a backup.

The worst place for this to happen is while on vacation, whether it be disney or anywhere. Just buy another card to keep with you just incase. They've really come down in price. To me it's priceless incase this would happen again.

I just bought an extra 2GB SD card this morning off of eBay for $80. Fully intend to sell it on eBay upon my return home.

With that being said, I also plan on bringing my laptop with me since video tends to fill up the memory cards very quickly.

Check out the dell website.

They had 1gb cards for $43 and then I also got free shipping.

I was leery about downloading my memory card while at WDW, too. I went to the photo shop in MK for it. Sure, it was $20, but I couldn't justify spending even more than that for a new memory card, especially when I would only use it while on vacation. When I got home, I just loaded the disc into my computer. Worked great! When we were getting it donwloaded, the CM told me we only pay for the actual disc, not the service of downloading. So for the remainder of our trip, if we had more pictures to download, there would be no additional cost. You can't beat that. I don't know if it would work on return trips or not, but I may try it next time I go. I wouldn't hesitate to use their service again.

Dell has a 1 G card for $35 now. That's only $15 more than getting your pics downloaded on a disk at MK! If you really don't want another card, I'd find a Walmart/Wallgreens/RiteAid etc. to put it on a CD (Or two!) for you. Frankly, I'm more afraid of getting a faulty CD than having a faulty memory card.

i just got a 1gb from dell. with the 3 i have now, i can take about 1000 pics. hopefully i won't need more...

I would definitely agree with the buy another card. For two reasons, you don;t have to worry about downloading or deleting every day and you have a back up if something happens to your card. My husband bought me a 1 gig card for my b'day and I already had 2 256 cards. Can;t wait to fill them up.

Since you have a car, you can go off-site to any of the local Walgreens stores, which all have 24-hour photo labs. Downloading there will cost you $2.99 per CD, for as many images as the CD will hold.

The closest Walgreens to POR is on SR 535. Follow the signs to Downtown Disney, continue onto Hotel Plaza Blvd, and follow it to the end. Hotel Plaza Blvd. ends in a T-intersection at SR 535 (Apopka-Vineland Road); turn left, and go about 1/8 mile. The Walgreens is on the left.

In a pinch, you can also download your pics onto CD at the camera shops in all 4 theme parks. Cost here is $12.99 per CD, limit 120 pics per CD. If they are not backed up, they will do it while you wait; if there are a lot of Guests in front of you, you might have to leave your card.

The camera shops in MK and MGM also have self-service download-to-cd kiosks (same cost as the full-service downloads).

Thanks for all the advice, I talked my DW into an early fathers day present and bought a whole new camera with a 1gb chip! :teeth:

WillCAD, that is great information to know. I may hit that wallgreens on the way out after our 7 nights at the world and download it before we head over to :rolleyes1 the other place. Good to know about the places in the parks if I need it in a pinch.

Thanks everyone, YO

You're going to store 7 days of WDW pics on a single memory card?

My advice to everybody is to get your pics downloaded at least every other day (I bring my laptop and download every day). That way, if something happens to your camera, or to your memory card, you will not lose a whole week of vacation photos, but only 1 or 2 days.

Have you ever accidentally hit "Delete All" instead of "Delete"? Or accidentally formatted the memory card, wiping out everything on it? That kind of thing is very, very common.

Lost or damaged cameras are also very common at WDW.

This is exactly what I do - I have 6 (4- 256, 1 - 128 and a 64mb smaller cards so all my eggs are in one basket. I have accumlulated them with camera purchases and two "DAH" moments when I rushed out of the house without a card in my camera after downloading the night before!!!

I purchased cards at Disney twice and paid through the nose for KODAK cards. Now I always have a spare in my purse and camera bag (I don't always take my camera bag with me). When I am in Disney, I normally have all empty cards with me, as I have been known to take 300 pics in one day since I got my new camera!!!

This way I am not carrying around the previous days photos and taking the chance that something will happen if by chance I don't have the time to download them!

Thanks for all the advice, I will probably just locate the closest Costco or Wal Mart to download on to a disk when we need it or at least when we leave from DW to head to the other places.

Thanks, YO
