...do you put the vegetables/sides in dishes (on the table where you are going to eat) so they help themselves?

...or do you plate it up for them straight from the pots in the kitchen?

I always let my guests help themselves. The only thing I plate up in the kitchen is meat or casseroles/stew.

I let them plate that as well. Unless they are a child they can select their own portions at my home.

I've never plated any meal for any adult.

In all my life, that has never been done at any gathering on any side!

I intend to plate in the kitchen, because I want to present them with a nicely dressed plate and then I'll offer extras in serving bowls on the table.

Everything goes on the table to pass or on the bar for a buffet.

When my kids were little, I used to plate stuff up in the kitchen for family meals but now that they are older I don't. The only time I plate stuff up is if I have an unexpected group of hungry teenagers and I want to make sure the main dish lasts through the whole group. ( I have two teenagers and this does happen!)

I never plate food. Everything is in serving bowls and in the buffet server.

I fill the plates only for the very young, and my grandma who shakes.

For regular dinners at home, I will plate food for DH and DS if we're eating in front of the TV because it's easier and because I usually know what and how much they like.

For guests? Never.

For DH and DS when we eat at the table? No. Maybe for DS sometimes, but usually no.

Interesting question though!

I never plate a meal for guests or family but have them serve themselves.

My SIL plates everyone's meal. She's a fabulous cook, though, so as long as she lets me have some, I'm okay with however she wants to serve. ;)

I asked the same question here months ago, and was quite surprised that nobody seemed to do it like me. So I am the one that answered 'never' in your poll, lol. I have a lot of dinner guests throughout the year and people seem to enjoy being served. Similar to a restaurant.
But holiday's are different. Everything was on the table today and people passed the food. And that's fine too.
If I am going to someone's home for dinner, I am so happy to be there and have someone serve me, that I don't care how the host decides to coordinate the dinner. Buffet, family style, restaurant style, it doesn't matter as long as the food and company are good. :)

I don't even put childrens food on the plates and serve it to them so I would never do that to an adult! I would hate it if someone filled my dish with food and gave it to me like that. I am pretty picky with food, if I don't like something I dont want it anywhere near my plate! I also don't like my food intermingling with each other, no peas overflowing into the potatoes etc.

It depends on what I am serving. When we host a holiday meal, I put things out buffet style and everyone serves themselves. If the main dish is something like stew or a casserole, I am more likely to plate it.
