When you give a gift, do you expect one in return?

The reason I am asking is someone I know sent me a gift for my birthday back in May. It was really thoughtful of them and I appreciated it a lot. I am definitely going to send a card, however, I think I wont send a gift. The last time I sent one, I never got a thanks until I asked if they received it and it turns out they lost it The other thing is that this person is just spoiled ROTTEN, but constantly complains and whines! I don't want to waste my money sending something to someone who wont appreciate it!

I guess my question is, if you went out of your way to send someone a gift for their birthday, would you be offended if they didn't do the same for you?

Personally, if I gave the gift, no I won't not expect a gift back.

Me too. I am always picking up fun little everyday gifts for my friends just because I thought of them but I would never ever expect something in return for a little gift or a birthday gift. I would much rather give something than receive it anyway!
