When you call in sick to work, do you explain what is wrong?

Just curious if an employer is allowed to require this if you are out just ONE day...I can see if it is prolonged, but seems like it might be violation of privacy if it isn't a case where absenteeism has become a problem.

Thank you!

I don't believe you have to specify what is wrong. You simply need to say that you are ill and won't be in.

I am home 'sick" right now ;)
called in and said I was taking a sick day.

maybe I cursed myself and that is why i am still bleeding

I don't know.............

I work for a husband and wife team. I'm their only employee and we are like family.......so it's no big deal. I know absolutely everything about their lives........and they know about mine.

I used to work for a place that required a doctor's note if you called in sick.

It depends on what is wrong. I might share if I had a bad cold (but usually they could tell by the sound of my voice), but if I had diarrhea I probably would just say I couldn't come in due to illness.

I always throw an ailment in there.

if I'm sick - I tell them what's going on (back problems/cold)

if it's a "mental day"...I have a migraine. hehehe

and then when I DO get a migraine...It's I have a gun to my head and can't drive in right now...

You don't have to tell them, but I do if I am going to be out for a day or two.

I rarely call in sick, but if I do I never say what is wrong. Just that I won't be in.

I learned to keep it short and sweet after having supervised people years ago. You just want to scream into the phone, "TMI!!!". OMG, its amazing the details people will divulge when it comes to being sick.

As a manager at 3 small individual doctors offices. I don't ask what's wrong if someone doesn't offer. It's the 3rd day for us. I actually think this was lifted from the Dept of Labor. Once you call in the 3rd consecutive day, then we can ask for a doctor's note.

However, I did recently let go a young women who called in 5 times in a one month period (her first month of work I might add). Anyhow, she was never out for more than 2 days in a row). However, she appealed her denial of unemployment, so I had to get a bit more involved w/ the Dept of Labor. They did tell me we could require a doctor's note for each "sick day" an employee takes. Also, we could prohibt someone from using paid sick time for sick kids or spouse's (the girls excuse was her son was sick each time). However, we couldn't fire them if they got an excuse from there kids or spouses doctor for sick days. But there was a limit on that too. The laws are defined, but very confusing. If we have someone abusing sick time, we usually start to look for another reason to let them go. Usually if they aren't there often, then their work is suffering and that will be the avenue we'll begin to take.

When we call in and tell what is wrong there is one person here who will send an email saying we are out sick AND WHY and I don't think it's proper. It just has me wondering if it's even LEGAL to require someone to tell you...esp. with all the new health privacy laws.

I would definetly think it in bad taste to spread an email of the day's absent and employee's and their ailment. I would think it leaves room for legal issues.

We only get 4 sick days a year ... so I don't have the opportunity to call in very often   Usually if I call in, my manager doesn't ask why so I usually don't offer an explanation.

Suzy Sullivan is out today - Cramps
John Jones is out today - threw his back out on the golf course
David Davidson is out today - hemarroids are acting up
Jill Johnson is out today - something about pushing out a 8lb baby?

LOL, one of my closest friends shares all this information with me, about her bowels and periods. Yuck.

I tell her TMI, but she still does it. I think some people don't believe you that they don't feel well and have to give you the details for sympathy.

I specify. I call my boss and give him a brief synopsis of why I'm out. I also call another coworker to expound a little more. If I don't call her, she'll just call me anyway. She's not being nosey, she's the type that would come bring me chicken soup or take me to the doctor if she thought I needed either one.

As a supervisor of a large department, I have no desire whatsoever to know why my employees are calling off. They are required to have a doctor's excuse if they are out more than 5 days. It doesn't even have to be specific. "So and so was under my care from March 1 until March7 and is now released for work" is sufficient. But some of my employees also suffer from TMI syndrome and I can't wait to get them off the phone!!

I usually do because if I don't, I will get nonstop phone calls or they will expect me to check my email throughout the day. Usually when I'm sick it's because I have the flu or a headache that I need to just rest and sleep off (or I haven't slept for a few nights because of other members in my house being sick).

I e-mail my boss and just say "I feel like crap, see you tomorrow." Any details amount to something like: "I can't even get out of bed" and that seems to suffice. I miss 2-3 days per year.

We have an automated system at the school that we just dial in to. It automatically calls a substitute. So, I guess we have it easy never having to go into detail. :earsboy:
