How about this- would it be a better experience to buy for the first time through the DVC or resale? I know that resale offers much better pricing, but because we are totally new to this process we're thinking it might be better to go through Disney- Any opinions on that????

We bought from Disney four times and resale once. The last two add-ons were to get points at VWL and BCV when only Disney was selling them. With Disney there are no closing costs and you can make a reservation as soon as your paper work gets turned in. With resale you have closing costs (at least $500) and can't make a reservation until the papers are filed at the courthouse. But you can get a cheaper price than Disney and you can buy sold out resorts like OKW, BWV and VWL that you can't get with Disney.

Disney has their own financing, but with resale you will probably have to come up with all the financing on your own. But you can use a credit card that gives you rewards or a home equity loan.

Initial Purchase and add on were through Disney. Cash for 1st, financing for 2nd.

First purchase and first add-on were through DVC. Very easy going through DVC. Bought another contract via resale broker last summer. Saved a bunch of cash and it was not as hard as I had thought it would be.

We bought all six of our contracts from Disney. To be honest, it just wasn't worth the work of buying a resale. When buying through Disney, we just picked up the phone and got the exact number of points, and exact use year that we wanted. We also had the option of financing at our fingertips. There is also no worry about negotiations, or closing, or borrowed/banked points ect...
In short, buying through Disney may cost a liitle more, but all the hassle of the purchase is completely eliminated. Yes, you can save some money buying resale, but perhaps not as much as you think.

Good luck.....

I am in the process of buying 250 points as a resale.

They should have received my deposit check today. Now it is a 5-7 week process. I am not sure why it would take that long. I would imagine that is a worst case scenario and takes into account one or both of the parties being slow at turning around the paper work.

The first trip I want to use the points on has a seven month window starting some time in March. I should be closed by then and be able to make my Oct reservation.

Because of the cost savings, even with closing I am getting 50 points more then I could have gotten buying from Disney for the same total price.

I see that as worth the extra wait. Now if I can’t get reservations for Oct after closing I may then be wishing I had bought 200 points from Disney.

VWL through Disney
OKW through resale
VWL Saved Closing cost with Disney and able to make ressie as soon as they got our paperwork back less than 3 weeks
OKW resale paid around $400 in closing cost and it did take longer than Disney before we were in the system - about 4-5weeks in total - but saved$16.00/point and thats with adding $2.00/pt to the selling price per point to account for closing cost
Both went smoothly and would recommend either.:D

WE BOUGHT THROUGH dvc O OUR FIRST CONTRACT 210 BCV points, and our 140 point add-on at VWL it is to simple not to use DVC.

We tossed around whether to buy from Disney or resale also. We would have bought a resale at BWV but decided on BCV through Disney because we could use their financing. Our home equity line didn't have enough on it to do the resale, and Disney's financing rate was somewhat competitive with unsecured loan rates on the market, so we went with Disney, with the intention of paying it off sooner. Good luck, whatever you decide!

BOTH, if you can believe it! We purchased a VWL contract via Disney direct and a BWV contract resale (Jaki at atimeshare.com) at the same time. The resale took longer to close, but we got banked points and ownership at BWV, which was not available direct at the time.

We later added on another contract at BWV with Jaki, and it's worked out well. In the future it would simply depend on the resort and where it's available. When they build that AKL DVC (fingers crossed) I'll buy from Disney direct, but if we were to add on another BWV contract or OKW, etc., we'd go resale as that's the only place to get them.

I bought my first contract resale as I wanted OKW. Was a little nervous, but it was very straight forward and seemed pretty easy, despite us living in the UK and having to deal with exchange rates etc! I recently did a small add on through Disney and they really do hold your hand through the whole thing - it did seem simpler than the resale, mainly because they will accept a credit card payment, and a little quicker.

But don't be put off. If the resort you want is no longer being sold by Disney, as in my case, or you just see a really good resale deal - go for it. It's certainly cheaper and probably worth that little extra effort. Anyway, all the good resale brokers out there will give you just as much help as you need.

We bought both through DVC. I agree with Maistre Gracey 100%.
It is easier through DVC, but we bought ours at $65 pt for OKW and $62 for VB. If I had to buy right now at $84 pt and higher:( , I would seriuosly consider re-sale only for larger contracts.

We purchased through Disney, but only because we knew we wanted BCV as our home resort, we had been waiting for it to go on sale and bought as soon as it did.

We bought BWV resale 2 years ago while waiting for BCV to open. Then bought BCV through Disney simply because we love that resort. Jaki with atimeshare.com was great and it was very easy and quick purchase- just a little over 2 weeks for resale which is unusual. Helps if you have financing prearranged or cash to expedite the process

I bought in 1999 and wanted BWV so I bought direct from DVC. There were very few BWV resales then. I bought 250 points at $65 with a $10 per point magical beginnings credit for 150 points (that was the max then when buying over the phone, I banked the other 100).

We have bought through DVC every time. We bought OKW in 1996 and paid $62.50. Then we did an add on when they opened more units at OKW and the price was $65. Then we did a Vero add-on last year when the points were $75. But we used the $15 MB at Vero which brought the cost to $60. I'm with ncligs, at $84 a point I would seriously consider resales first. Probably our next add-on will be a resale.

We've only purchased via resale. Buying two separate BWV contracts saved us over $2000 compared to the price offered by DVC. If the savings mean little to you, then I'd go ahead and buy through Disney :D ......

Technically, I don't know. In JulyI made an offer on a resale and it was accepted. In August I bought a BCV from Disney and they both closed the first week of September... I've done one add on since at BCV. Both were easy but the two month wait for the resale is torture.... We bought on Saturday from Disney and made our first ressie Monday morning after.

We first made an offer for OKW resale, then a month later called DVC to buy a smaller BCV contract. Interestingly, they closed the exact same day. Overall expense was less on OKW, but buying from Disney was definitely less stressful -- able to make reservations almost immediately, they were so clear on when and exactly how everything would happen, and they paid for overnight mailings, etc. so there was no doubt of the exact closing cost. (I have noticed that some people who buy resale tend to multiple the number of points purchased by the difference in basic price per point and consider that their "savings" but closing costs, payment for dues, overnight mailing, wiring fees, etc. make the cost through resale more than that simple figure would yield.)

Depending on the size of the contract there could be a significant difference in price. If I were buying a large number of points I imagine resale would be the only logical route, but for a small initial purchase or add-on DVC definitely gets competitive with the overall cost. For instance, when we bought directly from DVC we got the points for 2002 without having to pay dues for that full year, only tiny pro-rated amount. Again, no closing costs, no other costs at all.

I would not hesitate to go resale again, but also would not definitely rule out purchasing direct from Disney depending on their incentives and other circumstances at that time.

We purchased from DVC but would definitely consider a re-sale next time if it was at the resort I wanted and the usage month too. I was unaware that re-sales were so secure but this board has been a wealth of information for me. Annmarie
