Seeing this lots of places now, certainly not just here; the mental gap between the Summer 2020 voters and the 2021 voters scares me. People are out of savings and this can't go on. When the CA Governor, LA and LB mayors declared we are shut down until May 15 at least, I think that was the last straw. You can talk about science and flattening curves all you like, people are going to start getting VERY desperate.
CA started paying out the extra $600/week on top of normal unemployment this week and basically everyone is eligible for it that has lost a job or is on reduced hours, or self employed. So people are either still working or receiving the same or more than they were while working. No need to get desperate.

Are you serious? Even with $600 extra a lot of people aren't making near what they made after taxes.

For me, that would include work. We learned today that NYS courts won't reopen for non-essential matters until at least June. Jury trials won't begin again until possibly August or September.

Someone in CA would be receiving $1,050/week while furloughed, hardly calls for rioting in the streets due to desperation. If you were a high earner, you are likely working your office job from home now. The vast majority that lost their jobs were in the retail, restaurant and hospitality industries. For those individuals they will be making more than they did while on the job, depending on the state. So yes, I'm serious.

Maybe at first it was just retail and restaurant, but not anymore. Hospital workers, metallurgical engineers (yes), consultants and other professional jobs are now starting to see furloughs and lay offs.
How long do you think those "high-earners" working from home are going to last?

I think it was Florida that paid around $275 a week for unemployment? And oh yeah, you still have to pay taxes.

Does unemployment pay tips for the waitstaff who made most their money on tips, especially at more expensive restaurants? And the bartenders?
My friends who tattoo, do hair, do make up?
Daycare?
Companies that support restaurants?
Dental offices that are closed?
Construction workers?

But hey, what do I know.

Agreed, @Farro. I. just. can’t. deal, with. privileged. ignorance. any. more.
So what is the solution? Give everyone $10,000 per week so there are 0 people making less than they previously were? Give nothing in UI and open all the service industry businesses right now?

You can't just complain about how business needs to open without a solution for how that can realistically happen. The fact is, the majority of those furloughed will be just fine in the short term financially and I fail to see how that is privileged.

How about pay people their full wage? Instead of some random number. Some are making way more. Some are making way less. It doesn’t make sense.

Unemployment doesn’t last forever.

Not everyone qualifies for unemployment.

A big number of jobs lost will never come back. So some of these unemployed people will not have a job when this is over. When unemployment runs out and they still can’t find a job in their area what are they supposed to do then?

Yes all those you listed are eligible for unemployment now, the majority will make the same or more. The amount they chose was the make sure everyone got the national average salary. Is it perfect for everybody? No, but the post I responded to was essentially suggesting that people are on their own and desperate with no money coming in. It's not true, if you lost your job you can get UI.

No. They won't, they won't make the same. The demographic of people losing their jobs is changing.

You are making it sound like, no big deal, your lost your job. Hey, you get unemployment!

I'm gobsmacked. 😳

It is a privilege to assume most people are furloughed. It is a privilege to assume the unemployment insurance system works for everyone. It is a privilege to assume your finances are safe. It is easy to be flip and blasé and assume everything is ok because of unemployment. It is offensive to assume people are better off with unemployment. We had a similar conversation a few days ago, and you said you weren’t looking down on retail workers. Your statements this evening refute that. That is why I felt the need to respond as I did regarding privilege.

I never mentioned reopening businesses. You did.

edited for typos

I'm really not saying it's no big deal. I'm simply responding to those that are saying business needs to open because people are desperate. What I said is fact, the majority (yes, majority, not all) of people will not be desperate in the short term. If there is a solution where not 1 person suffers any loss from this that would be great, but I don't think it exists.

At my place of employment we had to let all the temps go. They are all now on unemployment. They are all making more now on unemployment than they were doing production for us. That will last for 4 months. Problem is, we will likely want to call them back before the end of July but there will be no incentive for them to come back. Blah to that.

Okay.:teeth:

It's my fault. I forget where I am. ;)
