Ongoing: Learn how to play Pickleball, the fastest growing sport in the country, with daily clinics and round robins at the Palmetto Dunes Pickleball Center in Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort. Pickleball is a sport that combines the elements of tennis, badminton and ping pong. February: You are cordially invited to discover and enjoy original works created by eight members of the renowned Palmer family of artists at the Coastal Discovery Museum during February 2019.

The Palmers’ connection to Hilton Head Island began over fifty years ago and since then family members have been active in the local art community while also enjoying critical and professional success well outside the geographic confines of the Lowcountry. This exhibition will showcase their spectacular works of art, but it will also share stories of this area’s history and personal reminiscences. Jim Palmer and his wife Barbara moved to Hilton Head Island in 1965, initiating this creative family’s long-standing connection to and influence on the community.

According to Addison Palmer, Jim’s son and one of the featured professional artists on exhibit, his family “has been and continues to be very creative. Having a family that is so strong in the visual arts, is unique. Being able to have everyone together to showcase our artwork and to tell our history of being on Hilton Head Island, is a true pleasure for the Palmer family.”

The Palmer family’s artworks, and connection to the area make this exhibition a perfect match for the Coastal Discovery Museum. Natalie Hefter, Vice Present of Programs, explained that the unique part of this exhibition “is sharing many of the family’s stories from the past five decades.” The museum is dedicated to bringing the area’s history, culture, environment, and art alive for our visitors and residents. This exhibition will bring attention to our natural beauty as well as stories of our more recent past. In a recent conversation with Jim Palmer, Hefter says, “he shared many personal reflections about Hilton Head and Lowcountry events and the family’s connection to them. Jim has lots of great stories to share!” A few of the reminiscences included: that the Palmers lived a Honey Horn for a while and Billie Hack hosted a baby shower for his wife Barbara; Jim was quite passionate about and actively fought the proposed BASF project (petrochemical plant planned for Victoria Bluff) in the late 1960s; the Chamber of Commerce’s monthly Islander Magazine’s masthead was Jim’s concept and he also provided artwork for its first cover in December 1966 (and many, many more issues after that); and many, many more.

The Museum is open from 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m., Monday – Saturday and 11 a.m.–3 p.m., on Sundays. The opening reception for this exhibition will be held from 5–7 p.m., on January 17th.

February 1: Comedy Magic Cabaret presents headliner Kerry Pollock on a regular basis with special guest performers approximately one week per month. All headliners are nationally touring comedy-magicians and stand-up comedians. Teens are welcome if accompanied by a parent.

Kerry Pollock has been headlining casinos and cabarets for three decades. He is a favorite at the world famous Magic Castle in Hollywood appearing in the Palace of Mystery on a regular basis and has enjoyed numerous television appearances over the years. On Saturday, Feb 2nd from 12 -4 p.m. Coligny Plaza will host a SouperBowl of Caring fundraiser to benefit Second Helpings – a local charity that “rescues” food from local grocery stores and delivers it to food pantries in our area for those in need. The event will take place at Coligny Plaza in the area between FISH Casual Coastal Seafood and Skillets. Local restaurants will be serving up their favorite soups for participants to taste and enjoy. The event costs $10 and all proceeds will go to support Second Helpings. Tickets can be purchased at the event, or advanced tickets can be purchased by clicking the ticket link below. Mondays: Forest Preserve Wagon Rides in The Sea Pines Resort, 3:30-4:30 p.m. Sit back and relax and experience the animals and plant life at the Sea Pines Forest Preserve. February 5: The Coastal Discovery Museum on Hilton Head Island will host a program on camellias on February 5 at 10 a.m. You will learn more about the Camellia Garden from Master Gardeners and garden founders, Donna and Fred Manske. The Manskes will share fascinating legends of the camellia and tips on growing your own camellias in the Lowcountry. The Coastal Discovery Museum’s Camellia Garden has 131 varieties that represent all the shapes and sizes that these winter-blooming plants exhibit. After an indoor presentation, proceed to the garden with the Manskes for a guided tour and hear more about their vision and dedication which helped build and maintain this special part of Historic Honey Horn.

February 16: The 26th annual Native Island Golf Classic, benefiting the I.W. Wilborn Jr. Scholarship Fund, will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, February 16, at Bear Creek Golf Club, Hilton Head Island, SC. February 18: Rita Rudner began her career as a Broadway dancer, but noticed the lack of female comedians in New York City and turned to stand-up comedy where she has flourished for over three decades. Her performance on a variety of HBO specials and numerous appearances on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, helped establish Rudner as one of the premier comics to emerge from the comedy boom of the 1980s. 5 & 8 p.m. Single tickets $49. February 21: The Palmetto Quilt Guild will meet from noon to 3 p.m., at the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Club, 40 Folly Field Rd., Hilton Head Island. Guest speaker is Valeria Hill, Quilt Teacher, Longarm Quilt Teacher and Gammell Sales Rep from northeast PA. She has been sharing her piecing knowledge and turn-under applique at local quilt shops since 2000. She does longarm quilting for herself and others.
