When to tell new employer about planned vacation

Okay well after 7 years at my job they are shutting us down!! :guilty: I found out my last day is Aug. 4th and they are paying me 2 months severance. Anyways I interviewed at another company this morning and the man that interviewed me seemed like he was interested in hiring me for a comptrollers assistant position. The comptroller is out until next week and he wants me back for a second interview with her. I'm really excited because he is going to beat my current salary and my old boss is working there....he was my connection to the interview.

My question is when they interview me next week, if they offer me the position on the spot, do I at that point let them know that I already have a planned vacation in May? (I doubt I'll have vacation by then). Or do I wait until I actually start and run it by them? I understand that I won't get paid if I haven't earned it yet but I don't want to disappoint dd7 who is supposed to be at WDW for her 8th birthday!

Whatcha think??? :sunny:

Honestly, I think a new job and the responsibilities associated with it trump a planned vacation. It's not until May though....do you really think you won't be able to take a vacation by then? If the answer is no, you need to weigh which is more important. I think the job and stability is but that is a decision for you to make. Good luck.

BTW, definitely DO NOT mention the planned vacation on the next interview.....I think they will question your priorities. You might be able to ask about vacation time in general once the job is offered to you, but I would not ask in an interview.

I completely agree with kpm76, do not mention it in the next interview. I don't see anything wrong, though, with bringing it up once you have the job. Actually, I would probably bring it up rather early ONCE you have the job. That way, they wouldn't think you planned it after you started and were just trying to pull a fast one. And since it is in May, it may not be an issue. I'm sure they would understand as well. They know life happens and that you didn't plan to leave the other company. But mentioning it in the interview process may confuse where your priorities are.

Best of luck on the interview! I hope you get the position!

definitely mention it AFTER you get the job. I had a planned vacation to WDW that was 3 months after I started my new job. I told them on my first day and said that I would take the time off without pay. No problem. Now I am faced with the same dilemma (although not a WDW trip this time... :( ) but I start my new job in 2 weeks and would need the time off end of aug...

I would say when they offer you the job or if they ask at the interview. There was a thread just like this a week or so ago and that was the majority of the responses!

Next May is a long ways away so even if they make you wait 6 months before using your vacation time you should still have some by then and be able to go.

Good luck with the interview!

As somone who hires, mention it when they offer you the job. It is VERY irritating to hire someone and then be told that they MUST have xxx dates off.

They will appreciate you being up front about it.

My mom always tells me to be up front about things like that. When I had my interview for my current job, I told them during the interview (they knew before hand, though) that I was in band and would need to take certain days off. I printed up a list of dates that I knew I needed off due to band practice/camps. (there were 40 dates listed over a 3 month period. It looked really bad, I know, but I think its better I did that than if I would have waited until say this week to tell them that I am going to need the next 3 weeks off.) My boss at the time appreciated me being up front about it. Then again, this is only a part time job at an ice cream shop, so take it for what its worth.
