When to start planning for a Jan 2010 trip?

I remember having this trouble before. You can't book stuff online past Dec 31st of this year. I'm looking at Jan 4-7 of next year. Maybe a Christmas present for the kids? We have never been there in winter, how crowded is it, compared to end of July, early Aug when we usually go? Dh is a teacher, and we can only go during school holidays. But, their district gets 3 wks off for winter, so I'm hoping that last week most people might be back in school already? Or do a lot of districts get three weeks?

Also, this might sound dumb, but are packages through travel sites non refundable? Is it better to just deal with a hotel directly so I have the option to cancel last minute? Sorry for all the questions. Any advice is appreciated!

Current ticket rates are until Jan. 4, 2010. Districts in my area (N. CA) only get 2 weeks off. I think the new rates come out between end of Aug. and early Oct. Travel packages can be canceled or changed for a fee depending on how far out you do it. Remember during your dates, IASW and HMH may be down to take down holiday overlays.

Thanks so much for the info! What is IASW and HMH though?

IASW = Its a Small World
HMH = Haunted Mansion Holiday

Got it, thanks! I can live without those two rides. For sure we wouldn't do the haunted mansion anyway. I have heard that IASW has awesome holiday decos though.

You would be going just after the holidays so you can expect lower crowds but also shorter hours. That is when DCA starts working on its entrance. With DLR it is always wait and see unlike WDW.
