When to request a "Trail" at AKL

Last week I posted asking which trail at AKL was best and heard many positive repsonses regarding Arusha trail. I need to know how/when I request to have a savannah view room on that trail. Do I need to make the request now on my reservation or do I wait and ask at check in? I thought I read that faxing the hotel with room requests was no longer done. I'm not sure how to increase my chance of having a good view of the animals from our Savannah view room at AKL.

Well, there are three Savannahs and four Trails. I believe you are thinking of the Arusha Savannah, which is right in the middle. They also have two other savannahs, which are both very nice, but don't have the Wildebeest and Zebra that excite us North Americans so much.

As for the Trails, going clockwise from the lobby entrance, it goes Ostrich, Kudu, Zebra and Giraffe. Savannah view rooms are available on the first three, but Arusha Savannah view is only available on Kudu and Zebra. The pool (Uzima Springs) is between the Zebra and Giraffe trails, so these are best for pool access, and also closer to restaurants. My preferences (in order) would be for Arusha Savannah, fairly far from the lobby (quieter hallways), 2nd or 3rd floor (closer to animals), Zebra Trail (quicker pool access).

Always put the most important request first (we always have "non-smoking - medical reasons" first) as those are the first ones that the CMs look at. As for timing, it is always best to put in requests right when you make the reservation, or soon thereafter.

I followed all the suggestions posted here and still ended up unhappy with my room at check-in.

I was apprehensive about getting what I asked for, so I had my family sit in the lobby (watching Disney videos, of course...) while I checked-out the room. When I saw it, I came right back to the front desk and we were moved before our bags were even brought in by the bellman.

It was very easy...
