When to bank

Our use year is in December, and we have points available to bank now. We did one trip this year, and a second one coming at the end of the month. Our banking window is July, and we're not planning any trips for the fall or winter. Is there any reason why I wouldn't want to bank the points now? Any downside to banking a bit early?

If you are 100% positive that you will NOT use any of those points before December, then there’s really no downside to banking earlier. It takes that stress away of having to remember to bank before the deadline, and one less thing to do...The only issue could be if you changed your mind last minute, before December, you are only be able to borrow 50% of your next use year, including those points...

No downside except a last minute trip. I always wait and bank until the month before the deadline just in case. Since I am now planning trips regularly, I know I won't forget!

I’d wait until July if it were me, you never know. We have changed our resorts so much for an upcoming split summer trip that we’ve banked 259 points only to turn around and have had to borrow 224 because of the changes we made. Now we will have no problem using those banked points next UY, but we complicated things and have learned in the future to not bank until the window is closing.

I haven't had any points left to bank up to this point, but I'm planning to bank almost 90 points next April (September UY) so we have enough for a Grand Villa the following year. Even though I'm 99% certain we won't be using those points until the following year, I plan to wait until near the deadline to bank.

Of course, I don't think I'll have to worry about forgetting my banking deadline ever because it's a few weeks after my birthday and I've drilled it into my head that my birthday is the banking deadline (even though I technically have until the end of the month).

Given my confidence that I won't forget to bank on time, I prefer to wait and have more flexibility, just in case my plans change.

Yeah, plans changes. Something always seem to come up, like that that great $9 fare sale, that you can't resist booking :). I actually did pay that much once, plus taxes/fees of course, so $19 total one way, $38 total round trip, never to be replicated other than us rewards travel on points. Oh, of course don't forget to add the luggage check-in fees, but it's still a good deal.

So yeah, I wouldn't banked early, even with no plans to use the points right now, unless you tend to forget, than bank now!!!

Great3
