When should I borrow?

We're planning a big family trip to WDW in summer of 2005. It will require all '04, '05 and '06 points plus a few rented points for four 2br at BWV for 6 nights.

Question: How long can I wait before borrowing the '06 points? Can I make the reservation long before I borrow? One unit would be for DBIL who is famous for cancelling at the last minute. If I must cancel his reservation, I'd like to do it before I've borrowed from the future. Is that possible?

Any reservation must have points available or MS cannot make it. We cannot borrow points except when actually making a reservation and borrowing is irreversible.

You can make a reservation with as many points you will have available and the points will be allocated toward that reservation at that time. If you don't have enough available points for the dates you want- MS will not make the reservation for you without borrowing. If you later have to cancel, the borrowed points will remain in the Use Year they were moved to and cannot be banked.

So, if I must cancel a part of the reservation, I should cancel the nights that used "current" year points. That way the unused points could be banked. Right? (Assume there's no deadline trouble.)

If you have to cancel, you can work with MS to reallocate points so that the banked and borrowed points are used first. If possible, you could set it up so the borrowed points are used for your BILs reservations.

Just to help figure out the logistics.....what is your Use Year and what month (or months) are you thinking about for the trip?

There are ways to save points. You can book standard view. You could also book 2 studios instead of 2BR units, especially for those that might cancel out on you. You might consider a GV plus studios and use the GV as base for the kitchen, etc. You could also consider OKW as it's less points. Good luck.
