I couldn't find a thread about this while I was in the park, thought I would create one should anyone search for it in the future. We were in the queue last month when the ride broke down. An announcement was made that the ride was experiencing difficulties, and that was it. Waited 40 minutes without a second announcement or update. I was selected by our end-of-the-line group to go back and ask a CM for a status. people were leaving throughout the closure so I figured it was probably going to be down for a bit. The CM told me that the ride take on average one hour to recover from any shutdown, no matter how minor. After one hour, CMs will start at the front of the line to hand out fast passes to return. Everyone who left the queue lost their place and boarding pass. By the time I got back the ride was up and we were on in short order, just around the 50 min mark.

If you really want to ride after a shutdown, wait at least an hour before leaving.

Great tip! I wish CM's would update at least every 15/20 min.... I know Rise has a lot of downtimes, but try standing in a room and stare at a wall for an hour- it feels like 5 hours. Especially packed in a queue line with strangers.

If they "know" it will at least be an hour, why not be upfront and honest with guests stuck in line?

I appreciate you sharing this info, even though I find it a frustrating and unnecessary way of handling line breakdowns!

It is really something that Disney has a system where you compete for a boarding group, arrive at a prearranged time, and can then get stuck in line for over an hour without communication. 🤦‍♀️

Thank you for this huge heads-up!

Been trying to decide if we should take DD on this ride or not 🤷‍♀️ and wondering if any kind of shutdown can tank the ride for almost an hour wait inside, how often does that happen?

Has anyone else waited through a shutdown? And for how long?

That’s interesting. We were there last week and were just getting ready to board the ride when it went down. They escorted everyone out right away and gave us all a fastpass to return any time that day. We waited a few hours and went back to ride without any issues.

The three days we were there in August it went down a lot. The first day it was down until 2pm.

You were lucky that you were about to board. They try to keep the queue stocked so that if it goes back up, they have people to load right away. If they clear the whole line, and then it goes back up, and then they have to call BGs and wait for those people to arrive… it slows down the operation quite a bit.

Oh that makes sense. We didn’t see the queue on our way out but it was probably still full of people then. I guess we were lucky!

Longer story, we were able to ride on the two full days we had in the park. First experience kinda sucked with the virtual queue, however finally getting on a ride that I have been waiting for for several years (avoiding all spoilers) made it totally worth it. We got our boarding group in the morning, 360 min wait. We went back to the hotel for an afternoon rest, planning our return time around the boarding pass. When we got back into the park, the ride was shut down and our 50 min estimated wait started to increase. What also sucked is I had one of those didn't eat enough/didn't drink enough overheating moments where I was ready to throw in the towel for the day. An hour rest in the Golden Horseshoe and some water fixed that. Glad I held on because shortly after feeling better, the ride opened up and our 90 min estimated wait dropped to 20 min in a short period.

The second day we got the boarding pass in the morning and headed over at noon. We just entered the shade area of the queue when it broke down, short time later finally stopping at the waterfall. Normally we would leave, but at 90+ degrees, hanging out near the waterfall felt pretty good so we hung on.

Another tip there, if the waits balloon due to a shutdown, don't fret too much. They can drop quickly.

With the tech that goes into that ride, it's no wonder shutdowns take about an hour. Someone's hat falls off or somebody does something stupid or one of the vehicles malfunctions, probably takes a ton of time to evacuate all of the stages, reset the vehicles and perform a test run to get it working again.

Ahhhhhhh....once again "resisting" the urge to watch a video ride through for the millionth time!! :-) Sounds totally amazing! I've been dying to go for years now. Thank you!

Funny bit: DH and I were watching the Disney+ Behind the Attraction show one night (which is SO cool) and had a moment of weakness after a couple of adult beverages. I pulled up YouTube on the TV, searched and loaded a Full 4K POV ride through of ROTR, went to press play...and DS walked in. We told him we were going to watch something that he couldn't watch so give us a minute. We didn't want to spoil the upcoming surprise. He took one look at the TV and said, "Oh, I watched that years ago!" 🤦‍♀️ Thankfully, it gave us the fortitude to shut off the TV without watching. SOMEBODY in this family needs to be surprised!! LOL

100% best decision not to spoil a ride this time. It was amazing.

Thank you so much for this thread! I was in line with my adult daughter this evening when the ride went down. Many people left the line and the rest of us sat down on the ground. I remembered reading your post recently so I immediately pulled up this site and searched for your post to review the details. I showed my daughter and we both agreed to wait it out, at least for an hour. We were in no rush, it was our last day in the park and RotR was our last must-do of the trip. So waiting was an easy decision, but knowing your experience gave us hope that we'd still get to ride. We never got a single update or announcement after the "ride down" notice, but after almost an hour wait, the ride sounds started up again and people in line started cheering. The line moved quickly then and we were on the ride in minutes. I'm SO glad we waited and got to ride. It was awesome!!

Thanks again for taking the time to post your experience. I love these boards.

Awesome! Really glad it helped. I spent a good 45 min searching while in line, hope this thread helps others. As some have mentioned above, I think they only do one announcement to keep people in line to help things move along once the ride is back up. Would be nice not to leave gusts hanging like that.
