are any taxes or fees due when you check in/out? Or does the rental from the owner cover everything (aside from extra housekeeping, towels, etc)?

No taxes or fees, you'll only pay for any charges against your room. Extra housekeeping and towels as you mentioned, or charges on your KTTW card for purchases.

If you pay the owner with PayPal, sometimes they ask you to pay those fees. But I think that's only around $3.
