When is Hurricane season in Florida ?

I read more Huriricanes this year ?

Any web-sites with info ? predictions ?

Thanks

Hurricane season runs from June 1 to December.

Realistically, the most threatening time is August and September.

But it is unlikely that any hurricane will have a serious effect on WDW. The parks have only been closed four or five times due to weather in the 35 years WDW has been in existence, and three of those were in 2004. In most cases you will get rain and wind from the residual effects of the storm but no serious damage. Orlando is well inland and therefore it is very rare that it will get the full brunt of a hurricane like a coastal area will.

There is no way to predict path and locations of hurricaes until they actaully form...and even then forecasters can sometimes miss the path.

Some folks in Orlando and surrounding area would beg to differ on the "no serious" damage comment who experienced Charley in 2004, and who were without power for several days+, and suffered property damage!

But on the upside - it pretty much took care of anything that was not structurely sound, old dying trees and roofs that needed repair.

I would consider WDW one of the safer places to be during a hurricane though!

Hi Martha,

Please note that I did say "in most cases."

Hurricanes are, of course, unpredictable... but the clear fact is that inland areas generally will not get hit as badly as coastal areas. Yes, Charley did a lot of damage in Orlando but the damage was nowhere near as great as it was in Charlotte Harbor, Punta Gorda, and Captiva, among other Gulf Coast locations.

Many coastal Florida residents will take refuge in Orlando during a storm (and who can blame them?) ;)

The official season runs from June 1st to Nov. 30. NOAA predicts approx. 5-7 major hurricanes in 2006 with 2-4 making landfall in the US. These are only GUESSES - they thought we might get ONE landfall storm in 2004 when we had 4 in 4 weeks!

Just b/c the offical season starts 6/1 and ends 11/30 doesn't mean you won't get storms before/after those dates. It is certainly something to consider; however, the storms usually pass within 24 hours and have warning times of 2-4 days before making landfall. Being inland, the threat is not as severe as the coast, but there CAN be significant damage if a major hurricane hits (Category 3 or above).

For detailed information about tropical storms, hurricane preparedness, etc., go to noaa.gov

Hope this helps!

I was in WDW during Hurricane Charley and that was about beginnig or mid August. As for sites, you could try checking here: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/

edit: ok I just realized the post above me already has this site listed lol :)

2 hurricanes have pounded Orlando in August in the entire time that they have been tracking them. The years were 1964 and 2004.
I think the odds are pretty good if you are planning an August visit!
