When in Disney...if your child got sick, what did you do?

I am very curious about others experiences. I hope that I do not have to find a doctor on our trip for my children, but just in case I want to be informed.
Where did you go? How far from Disney did you have to travel? Are they open at night?

I have also read on here about a doctor that will come to the room. Anybody have any experience with this? :listen:

Thanks for any info.

I would tell them to suck it up buttercup. I am at Disney and ain't got time to mess with no sick kids.......JUST KIDDING....sorta lol. :goodvibes :rotfl2:

Sorry I can not answer your question. My DD did get a cold while we were there in June, so we took an afternoon to rest but she was fine the next day and no Dr. was needed.

I have had to face this a few times. Oh the trials of motherhood.

Very 1st trip to WDW with my 8 month old DD. She had an ear infection before we left and was treated for it. 5 days into our trip she broke out in major hives head to toe. Called our doc at home, and it was confirmed an allergic reaction to penicillin. Because of the severity of her reaction we asked the staff at Poly for advice where to go for treatment for her. They gave us the number for centra care. Centra care was very good to us, picked up us, treated DD and got us out of there. We were able to enjoy the rest of our trip with just a few ours out of the Disney fun. (the rash didn't seem to bug her at all once the swelling went down.) This was Dec 2001

The next year it was an ear infection while at WDW. Once again Centra care took good care of us. (March 2003)

After that we said any trip that we didn't visit centra care for was a good one. We haven't been back since (knock on wood.) It makes me feel better knowing they are there.

I think it cost around $100. I can't remember if insurance reimbursed. We thought it was worth the piece of mind either way. I feel better knowing they (and places like them) are there. :thumbsup2

My then 1 yr old came down with an ear infection while in Florida. We also went to Centra Care. We were staying off site but right near Centra Care. Filled a prescription at Walgreen's (I think) and all was good again.

Thanks for the replies! :wave2:
Pepper23...this I will remember...but if this doesn't work...

:) thanks DisneyPhd and della-

It is my youngest (9 months old) that I worry about the most. My older child, I feel will be ok. She has survived many trips. I will remember Centra Care. I pray I won't need it, but I wanted to know where I could go if needed.

Did Disney give you directions?

We just went through this a few weeks ago. DD got sick with pink eye and an ear infection. The resort (CBR) referred us to Centra Care, which offers a free shuttle to the clinic.

It's $160 for an office visit, which must be paid in full if they don't take your insurance or if you're uninsured. Special care - lab work, etc - is extra. There's an attached pharmacy to have prescriptions filled, and they do not accept insurance but will give you a receipt to get reimbursed when you return home. My DD got eye drops and an antibiotic syrup, and it was $100.

I was very unimpressed with Centra Care. The front desk staff was appalling. People would call, and this one receptionist would tell them there was a 4 hour wait to be seen because the clinic was so busy (there were 3 of us waitijng), and then when she hung up she laughed with the other one about lying about the wait time to discourage people from coming. :sad2: She told another caller that called in that there was a 30 minute wait for a shuttle pick up at AKL, and as soon as she hung up she was on the walkie talking talking to a shuttle driver, whom she had apparently sent to Walmart to pick up a watch battery for her. They kept going back and forth because he couldn't find her model number, and all I could think about was the poor person at AKL waiting to get to a doctor.

The doctor and nurse we saw were fine, but very rushed even though it wasn't a busy night by any means. There were never more than 3 people waiting to be seen in all the time we were there, and that includes us.

I had to pay in full because they didn't accept our insurance, and two weeks later they sent me a bill for $45 more that doesn't say what it's for and I haven't been able to get anyone to return my calls and explain it. It's in dispute now, so atleast I don't have to pay it until it's sorted out, but it's definitely a hassle I don't need.

Next time, if God forbid there is a next time, we'll be using the rental car to go elsewhere.

My son's girlfriend used Centra Care in May. She had an eye infection. They picked her and my son up at All-Star Music, they filed her insurance (BCBS) and the Walgreen's next door filled her prescription and filed her insurance. They then dropped them off at Epcot, and they were able to join us in time for Illuminations.

(They were 19 at the time, so I had no problems letting them go on their own).

She did have a slight disagreement with the desk clerk about giving her SS#, but after a cell phone call to her parents, they signed her in without it. The doctor and the van driver were great!

They brought me back a 6-pack of Mountain Dew, so I was happy!!

Oh, FYI, the front desk of your resort should have a brochure with all the phone #s and locations.

Thanks for the replies... :)

fionasmommy...I can't believe the front desk staff! :sad2: I am glad to know your experience was positive with the doctor and nurse.

clkelley... Thanks... I'm glad to to get another good report from Centra Care.

I hope we do not need it, but I wanted to have some opinions just in case. Thank you! :)

I have done it all. Centra Care....Orlando Regional Medical Center and the doctors to the room.
When my oldest daughter was a year old she caught an awful virus. We went to Centra Care first and she didn't get any better with what they prescribed. We ended up at ORMC they had a pediatric ER. They were fantastic. We had to go back 2 days later because she had a reaction to the meds and they remembered us and were wonderful again to us.

When we stayed at Nick hotel a few years back. My oldest had an ear infection and I didn't want to expose the little one to waiting area at Centra Care so we called the doctors that came to the hotel room. It was great. Expensive..but it was worth it. In fact I asked them to check the baby while they were there. I had a feeling she had an ear infection. The dr looked at me as if I was nuts...he said I will have to charge you. I told him go ahead. He then was shocked that the baby had an ear infection. I said never underestimate a mother's intuition.

This past September my youngest daughter told me her ear was bothering her and we went straight to Centra Care. The wait was long and there weren't many people waiting. I would only use them for something minor.
The pharmacy there doesn't take any insurance. We had a car and we drove right down the street from Centra Care under I-4, past the Buena Vista Suites and next to Chik-Fil-A there is a Walgreens. They had all our insurance information since we use Walgreens in Texas.

Hopefully you won't need them when you go but at least you have some idea of the options. :)

About 4 years ago, my then 2yr old DD got an ear infection our first night at POR. We had a long day and a later than usual dinner at Chef Mickey's, and when I tried to put her to bed, she wouldn't settle down in the pack n play, kept crying. I thought she was just over tired to the point she couldn't settle down, so I decided to drive her around to get her to fall asleep, thinking once she was out, she'd be totally out. Long story short, she would fall asleep and every time I stopped she would wake up again crying, and after about an hour of this, it had turned into not normal crying, so I was pretty sure she had an ear infection.

By now it was close to midnight so I took her to the front desk at POR to ask them where I should take her. They were so concerned, offered to call an ambulance (she was screaming while we were there) but I told them I really was pretty sure it was her ear, we didn't need an ambulance, just needed to get to the closest ER. They offered to drive me, but I told them I had my van, just give me directions. They sent me to the Celebration Hospital (maybe that's not what it's really called, but hospital in Celebration) and they took good care of DD. I don't think it was more than maybe 10 minutes away. Yes, she had an ear infection, gave her the first dose of antibiotics and something for the pain along with prescriptions for both. We couldn't get them filled there because their pharmacy was closed since it was the middle of the night, but they told me Disney has a relationship with Turner Drugs and that they would call the scripts in to Turner and Turner would deliver them to POR, it would be added to my resort bill and it would come with paperwork to file for reimbursement from my insurance company.

The meds were delivered to the resort the next morning and staff at POR was so nice, delivering us a fridge without me even having to ask (this was before fridges were in all the moderates), delivering balloons and a card signed by Mickey for my DD, and calling to check on how she was doing a few days later.

I hope we never get sick enough to need a doctor again while in WDW but if we do, I hope the experience is as smooth as it was in 2002.

In 12-04 dd (who was 6 at the time) came down with strep on our 2nd night. The next morning we took her to FL Centra Care, the closest location to WDW is right outside the DTD area off of Apopka-Vineland/535 just north of Hotel Royal Plaza Blvd on the west side of 535. We went there on a Saturday morning, we had our car so we were able to drive. We did wait a while, probably 45 min to an hr which (unfortunately) is the normal wait time for her regular peditrician.

The front desk staff was very nice and they filed our insurance claim for us. The doctor (a woman) was also very nice. I had suspected strep as she was going through a phase of this over that year and I was right. Fortunately as bad as strep can be, in most cases when it is treated right away with antibiotics it takes about 24 hrs for a child to feel better so we were able to enjoy most of our trip after. We filled the medication at Walgreens that was down the street. I was pretty satisfied with them and wouldn't hesitate taking her there again if we needed to. I always keep their pamphlet in my WDW folder.

The phone number for the above location is: 407-934-2273 The hours may have changed since but they were opened until midnight during the week and 8:00 on the weekends opening at 8 am everyday.

At the time I was also told there was a resort doctor named Dr. Tom Blehl from "Resort Physicians". It was $100 (then) for a visit to your room and not covered by insurance. Their number is: 407-465-0000. Like I said this is from 2 yrs ago so your best bet is to check with the front desk at the resort.

Last August during my familes 2nd week at WDW I had started feeling sick on the Sunday evening & it got worse Monday evening. Usually when I am sick I had taken Alkaseltezer, because I thought I was just getting a minor cold & in a few hours I would feel a lot better. Well it did not happen this time, so on the Wednesday my parents final called for a Doctor from Centra Care to visit me at our room in the Contemporary. It turned out I had a minor throat infection, so I was given some antibiotics. The total cost was $221.00, so basically it was $200.00 for the Doctor's visit & $21.00 for the medications, which he had on him so we did not need to get it filled at Walgreens or Wal Mart. However I don't think the medication helped a lot because only during the night when I was trying to sleep, I was coughing very bad & I had thought during the day I was getting a lot better, because I was feeling better. So basically our 2nd week at WDW, I was in my room trying to get better. On our last day I was starting to get better, so I was able to go to the Magic Kingdom with some of my friends that I was meeting. However I was kind of upset that I had wasted a week in our room & that it took me that long to get better & since we were checking out the next day, I realized I have to wait until December to make up for the week I had wasted at WDW.

On our 2005 trip, we had to take our daughter to the doctors. We were at Universal when the issue came up and they recommended a place. I think it was something like After Hours Pediatric. They were great. They billed our insurance, didn't ask for any payment at the time, and were very nice. It wasn't fun to have to go there, but if we had to do it again, I'd definitely go back to them. I know they are fairly close to Universal though, so it may be a bit of a drive from Disney property. Unfortunately, we also had to make a doctor's visit for DW for an eye infection and I think we went to Centra Care for that. They were terrible. Incredibly long wait and they were very rude an unhelpful.

A few years ago, my son was bitten by a fire ant, which we shortly found out he was allergic to :sad2: .

When Benadryl wasn't working, and his hands and feet were swelling up, we asked the front desk where they suggested we go. Well, they suggested we call an ambulance (please, tell them it's not an emergency with lights going - ).

Ambulance guys suggested we get him quickly to the hospital, and sent us to Celebration Hospital, due to the swelling (could affect the heart of something).

They were great, although we had to pay cash prior to leaving, they were great, including cartoons for the kids at the emerg bed

Not cheap, but we were out within an hour and a half and he was feeling better within a day.
