"When I went it was all lights, and music, and Mickey doin' his magic." — Aug. '18 Disneyversary TR — Completed (Finally!!) August 20, 2021

It became a running joke: "Listen to Meghan! Don't Stand up!"
Way to be the the Class Pet! ;)

Here's a bit of that determination, as evidenced by my actual tongue sticking out. The pinnacle of concentration.

BCR5rdI.jpg
truth!

here was a nice man who was there with his family but wasn't actually surfing. He had a camera and said he just enjoyed photographing the classes. At the end of the class, he offered to send us all his photos if we gave him our email addresses. I expected to receive a dozen photos or so, with maybe a couple of me and N. It ended up being hundreds! Some of his photos were very good, and most of what you see in this update is thanks to him.
that was really nice. I was wondering how you were getting so many pics!

It looks like you are waving hello.

t was a very early morning, and it was a seeeerrrrrious work out.
I was going to say, you guys must have been sooooo tired!!!

Apparently, since we hadn't bought a waterpark ticket, and the park was about to open, we had to be immediately escorted out and weren't given the courtesy of a quick visit to the changing rooms.
That is horrible! I am sure that wasn't cheap! What id you didn't drive a car. Is an uber going to let you in wet?

we were on our way to Animal Kingdom Lodge to eat a stupid amount of breakfast at Boma!! :lovestruc
Yum!

We made the stupid-long walk out of DHS (is this still a thing now!? I can't wait till this isn't a thing!)
They have the bus depot open now, so hopefully not.

"There's nothing to do here! That's why everyone is leaving!"
Oh No!!!! yikes.

This is literally Gwen's favorite word right now.

I would be willing to give Yachtsman another shot in future, based on N's meal, and on the many positive reviews I've heard, but we haven't worked too hard to fit it into our plans again yet, and I definitely wouldn't do it at a time when I had anywhere else to be afterwards.
It's funny most folks rave about it, but every once in awhile you hear a bad review. I guess every place has it's bad moments. And some places just are better at working with food allergies, for sure. (I learned that from reading all of your trip reports!)

N, however, is over the moon. He has loved Star Wars for the better part of his life, and this will, no doubt, be an incredibly magical experience for him.
Andy already said he will probably loose his ***t when we see the Falcon.

I'm so sorry to hear that. But I do hope you get a chance to check out Shula's at some point! Sending positive thoughts to you and your family.
Thank you Meghan. It's been a rough month. May just have to save Shula's for next year.

I know I've read what the brand is before, but I can't seem to bring it to mind. I know a lot of the Disney restaurants use the Deanna's gluten free rolls, which aren't terrible or anything, but they're definitely not my favourite.
I was meaning this one...you said it was way better than most, so maybe a different brand?

Ooh, I'm glad to hear you got an AP preview, too! We won't be there yet on the 17th, but possibly another day or another time. I hope you have a fantastic preview! I'm looking forward to comparing notes with you and other Disfriends after ours.
As I mentioned in another thread, living here has its advantages. The disadvantage is I have to do stuff like this on the weekend or miss work. I never got the notification email, but I heard about it and called in. I was on hold for a LONG time, but at least I got it. My brother and SIL are platinum passholders also, but they didn't call in soon enough. Fortunately (in this particular way) neither my wife nor my SIL are Star Wars fans, so it will be me and my brother.

Hi, friends! Just sharing a life update/PTR-type update here:

Now that I'm done my internship, N and I have been travelling for his work, and we ended up around Toronto for a couple of weeks. Toronto is a Canadian city in the province of Ontario that I suspect many of you are probably actually familiar with, based solely on the fact that whenever I tell someone I'm from Canada, they typically either ask whether I'm from Toronto, or Vancouver/British Columbia. Along with N's work, we also have had the opportunity to do a few fun leisure-type things.

N and I finally got out to see the live-action Aladdin movie the other day. I had mixed feelings about it, but I'm glad we got the chance to see it in the theatre. On the topic of movies, I also went to see Toy Story 4 recently with a friend, and I really enjoyed it! I still maintain that Toy Story 2 is the best Toy Story movie. Obviously! And I do see it as kind of separate to the first three movies, which made up a cohesive and complete trilogy. But I still thought it was a quality movie, with a great story, funny bits, and loveable characters old and new. I found it really entertaining, it gave me the feels, and I left the theatre a total Bo-Peep fan. (I didn't know how much I missed her until I saw her again! Bo = #myhero #swoon.)

While we were near Toronto, we decided to go in to the city for an afternoon to see the touring production of Come From Away. N had never seen a professional show of that calibre before, so he was really blown away. I've seen a handful of Broadway shows, however, and I was equally astounded. For Americans and Canadians alike, (especially for eastern Canadians like me and N,) this show is so touching and meaningful. It manages to be very funny, but still grave and respectful, and the music was fabulous. If you're not familiar with the story, Come From Away is inspired by the story of the 38 flights that were grounded in Gander, Newfoundland, on 9/11, and it explores the stories of some of the folks who came to be referred to as the "plane people," as well as the residents of the town. I expected to like it, but I ended up loving it. If you ever get the chance, don't pass up an opportunity to see it.

While we were in the area, I also had an appointment in the city to attend! I had been looking to get a Disney tattoo for some time now, and I bounced some different ideas around in my brain until I finally found the artist I wanted to design it. The artist, Keegan, was originally from close to where I live, but as many Canadians artists who want to live in a cultural hub and make a living with their art tend to do, he moved away to a larger centre. Keegan was able to take all my ideas and put them together in a beautiful and cohesive tattoo, and this is what he came up with!

b6hGL0K.jpg

If you want to check out his other stuff, you can find Keegan's work on Instagram: @keeganink

After nearly 5 hours sitting for my first tattoo, it was nearly finished and looked like this:

3Be1Lmj.jpg

I'm so pleased with this design, and it seems to be healing up quite nicely so far. Keegan managed to blend two of my EPCOT loves, Spaceship Earth, and Illuminations, into one beautiful and seamless globe, which is exactly what I asked him to do. He incorporated nods to Flower and Garden, and the Canada Pavilion, and even hid a little Hidden Mickey for me. I love that this tattoo shows my love for Disney parks, but more than that, it's a symbol of progress, human resilience, and new life. Fingers crossed, it should basically be fully-healed by the time we get to WDW next month, so I can't wait to show it off once in a while at EPCOT under copious amounts of continually-reapplied sunscreen! 🌞 😎

Speaking of our WDW trip next month! I chose not to do a pre-trip report for that trip, or even to really insert much of a mini-PTR into my other reports, so I haven't shared too much about what's happening on that trip. I thought I'd throw in a few little details here now. :goodvibes

What prompted me to write about this trip is that just yesterday, like many of my other DISfriends, I was able to secure an annual passholder preview slot for Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge! I'm excited to get the chance to see the new land, and to marvel at the staggering feat of imagineering that I know it will be, but I've never been a particularly enthusiastic Star Wars fan. N, however, is over the moon. He has loved Star Wars for the better part of his life, and this will, no doubt, be an incredibly magical experience for him. Our preview is from 11am-3pm on Aug. 21st. I'm a little concerned that I booked a slot in the hottest part of the day, but it was the time that worked best with our trip schedule, so we'll just have to make due and hydrate well.

Other things to share about this trip... so we will be arriving, likely, on August 20th at some point (depending on how quickly we can drive down from Canada.) We will leave to drive back home sometime by lunchtime on Sept. 1st. We're staying for the first half of the trip at my grandmother's timeshare off-site, and the second half of the trip at the Beach Club on a particularly good travel agency deal that we've used on past trips around this time of year.

Another exciting "first" for this trip will be that I get to attend Food and Wine for the first time! N has been before on a work trip, but I've never managed to get there. We'll also be trying a few new restaurants (e.g. Morimoto Asia, Flying Fish, Mama Melrose, and the Storybook Dining meal at the newly-reimagined Artist Point.) We're doing a some tours, including the UnDISCOVERED Future World Tour (repeat for me, and new for N,) and the Segwey tour at Fort Wilderness. We're doing a Halloween party, trying out a "glow" party at Typhoon Lagoon, and maybe even checking out the pianos at Jellyrolls, or the karaoke at Kimonos. I'm hopeful that I will also get the chance to meet up with a few other DISfolk who will be down there at the same time. I expect that it's gonna be a pretty exciting time when all is said and done, and if I ever manage to finish this trip report, then I'll be sure to start another one to tell you all about it!
I have been reading along with your TR since the beginning because it is at a similar time as our upcoming trip in a week and a half. We’ll be there at the same time this year!

Way to be the the Class Pet! ;)

 Story of my life!

that was really nice. I was wondering how you were getting so many pics!

It was so nice of him! Sometimes with how crazy and self-absorbed people can get on vacation (myself included, I'm sure!) I kind of forget that there are still lovely generous folks out there everywhere. This guy was so nice and thoughtful to send us all his pictures. And I know there were several other people he sent them too, too.

It looks like you are waving hello.

Haha now that you say that, I can't not see it that way!

That is horrible! I am sure that wasn't cheap! What id you didn't drive a car. Is an uber going to let you in wet?

Right!? I felt like it was worth it, but you're right that it was expensive. It wasn't well thought out on their part at all. I don't know if it's just not an issue because a lot of people tend to buy a waterpark ticket and just stay after the class or what?? But it was really annoying for us.

They have the bus depot open now, so hopefully not.

That's good news! Fingers crossed!

This is literally Gwen's favorite word right now.

 Gwen is such a fun kid!

It's funny most folks rave about it, but every once in awhile you hear a bad review. I guess every place has it's bad moments. And some places just are better at working with food allergies, for sure. (I learned that from reading all of your trip reports!)

Totally. I'm sure it was just that night, or maybe just that the allergy chef wasn't quite as skilled as the others, etc. We'd be willing to give it another shot, but not high on our list right now. And you're totally right! I really appreciate that Disney is so accommodating of allergies and that I can eat something safely pretty much anywhere I go. That said, some places really nail the allergy stuff, and some...not so much.

Andy already said he will probably loose his ***t when we see the Falcon.

:rotfl: I'm sure!! I hope you all have an amazing time! For big Star Wars fan families like yours, this land is gonna be so epic.

Thank you Meghan. It's been a rough month. May just have to save Shula's for next year.

I've caught little snippets in other TRs that hint at what you've been going through, and I understand you're dealing with quite a loss. I'm so sorry, and sending prayers for peace and healing your way.

Yeah, we just happened to luck out with the timing. We were travelling for Nathan's work, and I just happened to be chilling out in our hotel with nothing to do that entire morning when it opened up. I had been following a watch thread here on the DIS because I knew Nathan would be very interested in going if we could get a preview slot. But if it had been another day, I definitely wouldn't have had time to watch for it closely and get it booked before everything booked up so quickly! Glad you got a spot, and that your brother can go with you. I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on it!

I have been reading along with your TR since the beginning because it is at a similar time as our upcoming trip in a week and a half. We’ll be there at the same time this year!

Thanks so much for following along! Maybe we'll run into each other while we're both there. :) If you see me, feel free to stop me and say hello! I'll be the red-faced girl with a dole whip, dripping with sweat.

That time we went to the dark side.
Aug. 21—Part 1

As I've alluded to in the title of this update, this day we were headed to Universal Studios. I'm gonna try to keep the updates from this day relatively brief since this is the Disney TR forum. (And also because I need to just get through this trip report already, let's be real, and we're only like halfway there. It's been almost a year. Oops!)

As the sun came up at the Grand Floridian, it looked like it was shaping up to be a very nice day. (Some of you may remember that I had done a lot of travelling with my buddy Haynnk—very similar to the character of Hank from Finding Dory—over the summer, as mentioned in my previous TR. I didn't want to pack him in my Florida suitcase and take up too much space, so he graciously shrunk himself down to a small size so I could bring him along!)

N and I had annual passes to Universal that we'd purchased back in the winter (on our December/January trip that, as you may recall, I was going to write a trip report for until I lost all the writing I'd done for it on my laptop.) Because of our passes, we had the opportunity to enter the Harry Potter area early. Originally this was the plan, but I was beginning to get sick with some kind of nasty cold, so we decided to chill out and sleep in for a while. Eventually we got up and around, grabbed a bite, and drove to USO, arriving around 10am.

Pg8VwC4.jpg

It was a beautiful day, and photos were in order! (I always get that feel-good sensation whenever I see a view of Universal/CityWalk with a bright blue sky behind it.) I also bought a new lanyard on CityWalk for my annual pass.

We began at the Universal Studios park, and I browsed the Universal store on the way in, where I saw this cute Hermione tank top. I ended up going back and buying it before the day was done.

N rode Rip Ride Rocket first before he lost his nerve. I stayed safely on the ground.

tmmTqxu.jpg

They had begun decorating for Halloween. I think the first Halloween Horror Night was coming up soon, but I don't remember for sure.

ZfWJEf7.jpg

Then we headed to one of my favourite rides, E.T.

RlPkRIO.jpg

viqCZmj.jpg

The ride broke down while we were in line, so there was a bit of a delay, but eventually we got moving and took a bike ride through the forrest and to E.T.'s home planet. E.T. saved his planet once again, and it was a pretty great adventure.

Then we rode Men In Black...

Nkq6vUr.jpgv

...and I beat N pretty mercilessly. I'm not exceptionally fantastic at this ride, but I'm better than N, which was all that mattered!

hlpF9ne.jpg

N thought this award (below) was hilarious and incredibly accurate. I have no comment. (If you can't read it, it says "WORLD'S GREATEST LOVER.")

jvp0IMg.jpg

I grabbed a Coke Icee, and then we were off to experience some magical adventures in Diagon Alley.

JJP1vWN.jpg

We had lunch at the Leaky Cauldron where N got the fish and chips, and I got the specialty chicken sandwich on a gluten free bun. I also got a Tongue Tying Lemon Squash, which I feel is one of my greatest and simplest joys in life.

sOdl9T4.jpg

Then we rode Escape from Gringotts. I took the picture below because I was shocked that the standby line was only 40 minutes in the early afternoon! Maybe everyone was at lunch. :confused3

We took the train over to Hogsmeade.

I know most people find Diagon Alley more impressive, and maybe objectively I'd agree that it is, but there's something about the Hogsmeade side that just feels more special and magical to me.

While N rode Forbidden Journey in the single rider line...

VLVDmFi.jpg

...I took a flight on a hippogriff.

Il0QP0x.jpg

We got a refreshing butterbeer for our travels, and took some photos, before saying goodbye to Hogsmeade.

Then we were entering my favourite area of the park: Jurassic Park.

NJllUEH.jpg

I just love the theming and the soundtrack, and it's a part of the park I remember very well from when I was a kid travelling with my parents, so it feels extra nostalgic to me.

I was starting to feel a little tired, and my cold was starting to kick my butt a bit, so we decided to take a break. Normally, when staying at Disney, we'd just head back to the resort for an afternoon snooze. What does one do to take a break at Universal, I wonder...?

GaeBeqn.jpg

...why, go to the movies, of course!

It was dark, and much cooler in the theatre, so it made a nice respite from the sunny afternoon. (It was actually too cool, really. I hate to complain in the Florida heat about air conditioning, but it was intensely cold in the theatre, and I ended up wishing I'd brought the sweater I pack on summer trips for occasions such as this.)

The movie we chose was the live action Winnie-the-Pooh-themed movie, Christopher Robin, which was still fairly new at the time. I had seen it once already and enjoyed it, but N had never seen it. ...And for a while, I thought he never would see it, actually! The movie started late by about 12 minutes, and only after N and several others in the theatre went to inquire about it. Eventually, the movie began. This, by the way, is where the quote from this update's title came from, when CR's daughter decides to go outside, despite CR's absence, and play. I thought it was very appropriate for how I feel about Disney trips as an adult! :goodvibes

After the movie, we did some walking around and taking pictures.

We were eating at Mythos! Normally this meal is a slam-dunk for us, but *spoiler alert* this time I ordered poorly and it wasn't great.

I was served more hamburger-bun-style gluten free bread, this time cut up into tiny pieces :confused3 Meh. Still tasted good.

OiLsgVO.jpg

N's bread was a bit fancier, and the butter was printed with the Universal logo.

8tj6MQM.jpg

mlf4wJo.jpg

N ordered...something?? Some kind of meat/potatoes/veg kinda meal with a sauce and/or gravy? No idea. He said it was just okay.

bYxYK7c.jpg

I ordered the seasonal risotto, which is gluten free and can be made vegan. I have to watch what/how much dairy I eat, so I opted for the "vegan" version, but added chicken. It had peas, red peppers, and an entire chicken breast. It was very....well...it was food. I guess. Not horrendous. Not good either.

tTOK2ob.jpg

Next time, I would stick with my beef medallions, or try one of the many other meal options that can be made gluten free.

I wanted to ride the trolley in the sky. I think it makes a wonderful closer to a day at Universal. But it had just started to rain a bit and the trolley was down for weather. Instead, we just decided to head back to Disney. As we got into the car, exited the parking garage, and began to drive away, the skies opened up and it started to pour in a way I've only experienced a handful of times in Florida, the sky cracking apart from time to time with a flash of jagged lightning. @Terra Nova guy also wrote about this downpour in his trip report, I recall. It was very memorable!

As we neared Disney property, the rain was beginning to let up some. We decided to stop at Disney Springs and pick up more treats from Erin McKenna's, some lovely soy candles from the Marketplace Co-Op, and some bath salts from Basin.

When we arrived back at the Grand Floridian, Happily Ever After had just begun over at the Magic Kingdom, and there were some guests watching the fireworks from the dock.

StykuYJ.jpg

We paused for a moment to watch, then headed up to our room where we enjoyed relaxing baths with our luxurious Basin finds. Before long, it was time for bed.

Hello from a fellow Haligonian! ⛵

The surfing lesson looked awesome. How much did it cost, and how long was it?

I hope you have an awesome time at Beach Club. It is my family's favourite resort. ❤

Hello! Always nice to "meet" another Maritimer/Haligonian!

The cost and how long...oh gosh...I don't remember...*Googles*...According to the Disney website, the cost is $190 per person, and the length of the lesson is 2.5 hours. This sounds about right for what I remember from last year. I'm not sure whether the price was exactly the same or if it's increased slightly. I do know, though, that part of that 2.5 hours includes the teaching portion on dry land, so you're not a full 2.5 hours in the actual pool. Another perk is the small class size. No more than 12 surfers are in a single class.

Thanks! I'm really looking forward to experiencing the Beach Club for the first time.

Sounds like a good day at Universal with a break at the movies thrown in there! Glad you left in time before the storm hit!

Our timing couldn't have been better! It was a nice day overall.

What a busy and fun day at Universal! Traversing both parks and seeing a movie and going to a nice dinner is a lot to accomplish in one day, especially when you weren't feeling 100%!

Oh my goodness, that Hank tsum tsum!!! I love it.

Butterbeer by the Hogwarts Castle is almost necessary when at IOA.

Movie theaters in the summer are brutal with the air conditioning! I think it might be because I'm living somewhere that doesn't have air conditioning and am more aware of A/Cs, but I think theaters are the worst offenders for freezing you out.

I can see why your dinner was just...meh. It looks like it came from a prepackaged container. Nothing very original going on there, nor did the chicken look like it had any flavor. What a bummer.

. @Terra Nova guy also wrote about this downpour in his trip report, I recall. It was very memorable
That particular storm was crazy! Even by Florida standards.

Sounds like you had a good day at the Dark Side. I enjoy Universal too and I kind of regret skipping it last trip. With some of the new rides (Hagrid’s motorbike, Jurassic World coaster) I’ll be tempted to get there next trip.

(I always get that feel-good sensation whenever I see a view of Universal/CityWalk with a bright blue sky behind it.) I also bought a new lanyard on CityWalk for my annual pass.
Oh yes! It is a different feeling of nostalgia/excitement than WDW for sure but it’s elation at its finest. Your post is getting me excited for our October trip!!

N rode Rip Ride Rocket first before he lost his nerve. I stayed safely on the ground.
This one really does require nerve, even for a coaster fan! That feeling climbing the lift hill flat on your back is nerve wracking :scared: but so fun! You got some great photos this day while N was braving the brain scramblers!

eventually we got moving and took a bike ride through the forrest and to E.T.'s home planet. E.T. saved his planet once again, and it was a pretty great adventure
:cloud9:
“Weellllllcooooome hoooome... you’ve arriiiiiived!”

My favorite ride!

N thought this award (below) was hilarious and incredibly accurate. I have no comment. (If you can't read it, it says "WORLD'S GREATEST LOVER.")
:rotfl:
I think we can all just assume he’s the world’s greatest lover to you, his adoring wife.

I can’t stop laughing at this, like who would buy it other than for a joke? And wouldn’t that be an expensive joke? I can only imagine walking into your coworker’s office and finding such an award displayed on a desk...

We grabbed some snacks at a cart, and then rode the river adventure ride, which is one of my favourite rides at Universal.
Yep, definitely going to need to finally take the plunge (ba dummm ch!) and ride this one in October. I always want to but never want to risk getting soaked. We’ll have to do it before returning to our room for a break or something!

(Taken to commemorate our surfing lesson!)
N looks so at ease here! Must have gotten more comfortable after the wave pool lesson...

I was served more hamburger-bun-style gluten free bread, this time cut up into tiny pieces :confused3 Meh. Still tasted good.
This also had me cracking up. Like what, you’re not going to notice it’s a hamburger bun if they cut it up into little bread nuggets?!

I was beginning to get sick with some kind of nasty cold
Oh, no. :(
I saw this cute Hermione tank top. I ended up going back and buying it before the day was done.
Glad you got it. :)
I have read so many "I saw this, liked it, didn't get it, regret it" TRs.
N rode Rip Ride Rocket first before he lost his nerve.
I bet! That's... a daunting looking ride.
Then we headed to one of my favourite rides, E.T.
Love that ride. :)
and to E.T.'s home planet. E.T.
… but not that part of it, to be honest.
Then we rode Men In Black...

N thought this award (below) was hilarious and incredibly accurate. I have no comment. (If you can't read it, it says "WORLD'S GREATEST LOVER.")
I grabbed a Coke Icee
Oh! I was so focused on butterbeer that I completely forgot about that!
We had lunch at the Leaky Cauldron where N got the fish and chips,
What did he think of that?
Then we rode Escape from Gringotts. I took the picture below because I was shocked that the standby line was only 40 minutes in the early afternoon!
 How is that possible?? It was over 40 minutes about 5 minutes after park opening!
We took the train over to Hogsmeade.
That train... such a great idea for a ride.
I know most people find Diagon Alley more impressive, and maybe objectively I'd agree that it is, but there's something about the Hogsmeade side that just feels more special and magical to me.
Hmmm... I wonder if that's because Hogwarts is such a magical place in the movies/books?
We got a refreshing butterbeer for our travels,
mmmmm… yusssss...
I just love the theming and the soundtrack, and it's a part of the park I remember very well from when I was a kid travelling with my parents, so it feels extra nostalgic to me.
What does one do to take a break at Universal, I wonder...?

GaeBeqn.jpg

...why, go to the movies, of course!
 Of course!
The movie we chose was the live action Winnie-the-Pooh-themed movie, Christopher Robin, which was still fairly new at the time. I had seen it once already and enjoyed it,
I saw that one. I liked it too... but...
I really am starting to wonder about all these live action re-makes/re-imaginings.
We went back toward IoA, and N rode the Hulk coaster.
Another intimidating ride.
We were eating at Mythos! Normally this meal is a slam-dunk for us, but *spoiler alert* this time I ordered poorly and it wasn't great.
uh oh...
I was served more hamburger-bun-style gluten free bread, this time cut up into tiny pieces :confused3
What? Did they think you didn't have teeth, too?
N ordered...something?? Some kind of meat/potatoes/veg kinda meal with a sauce and/or gravy? No idea.
This is the kind of cracker-jack reporting we've come to expect around here!
(And I just did the exact same over on my TR!)
I opted for the "vegan" version, but added chicken.
That must've confused a few chefs.
It was very....well...it was food. I guess. Not horrendous. Not good either.
yum... not.
As we got into the car, exited the parking garage, and began to drive away, the skies opened up and it started to pour in a way I've only experienced a handful of times in Florida
Good timing. ::yes::
then headed up to our room where we enjoyed relaxing baths with our luxurious Basin finds.
I can almost hear the "aaaahs".

Then we rode Men In Black...

I have never been on this ride - is it just like Buzz Lighyear in terms of how slow it goes?

Trying to catch up as usual...I enjoy reading about the Universal stuff too!! Made me want some Butterbeer :) Sorry the food wasn't all that!!

What a busy and fun day at Universal! Traversing both parks and seeing a movie and going to a nice dinner is a lot to accomplish in one day, especially when you weren't feeling 100%!

I didn't really think too much of it at the time, but it actually was a really busy day!! We managed to do quite a lot in a short period of time!

Oh my goodness, that Hank tsum tsum!!! I love it.

I love him! He's so cute!! I'm a fan of the little plush tsum tsums anyway though. I have quite a lot of them because I pick up a couple on each trip. I like that they're small so they don't take up too much space in my suitcase or on my shelf.

Movie theaters in the summer are brutal with the air conditioning! I think it might be because I'm living somewhere that doesn't have air conditioning and am more aware of A/Cs, but I think theaters are the worst offenders for freezing you out.

Totally!! I wouldn't expect to complain about being cold in Florida, but it really is a shock to the system when you go in out of the 100 degree heat, to what feels like the inside of a refrigerator!

Sounds like you had a good day at the Dark Side. I enjoy Universal too and I kind of regret skipping it last trip. With some of the new rides (Hagrid’s motorbike, Jurassic World coaster) I’ll be tempted to get there next trip.

We did have a good day! We aren't going back this trip, and I'm starting to regret the decision because of these new things. But I'm sure we'll get back to check them out eventually!

This one really does require nerve, even for a coaster fan! That feeling climbing the lift hill flat on your back is nerve wracking :scared: but so fun! You got some great photos this day while N was braving the brain scramblers!

Oh my gosh, I can't even imagine. N finds that climb straight up to be the most unsettling part for sure. Then he's pretty much okay.

:cloud9:
“Weellllllcooooome hoooome... you’ve arriiiiiived!”

My favorite ride!

I definitely heard this in my head in the exact sing-song voice of the Green Planet alien on the ride. :lovestruc

:rotfl:
I think we can all just assume he’s the world’s greatest lover to you, his adoring wife.

Let's go with that!

I can’t stop laughing at this, like who would buy it other than for a joke? And wouldn’t that be an expensive joke? I can only imagine walking into your coworker’s office and finding such an award displayed on a desk...

Right!?! Like, what is the purpose? I certainly hope just as a joke. Oh my gosh, could you imagine! If someone just had this sitting in their office somewhere?? Or like if you were invited over to a dinner party of an acquaintance from work or something and they had this displayed in a trophy cabinet in their living room or something??

Yep, definitely going to need to finally take the plunge (ba dummm ch!) and ride this one in October. I always want to but never want to risk getting soaked. We’ll have to do it before returning to our room for a break or something!

It's fun, I've gotta say. Maybe it's just because it feels nostalgic for me since we rode it when I was small. But we've done it some times where we haven't gotten all that wet, and then some times when we've been absolutely soaked. I think it definitely has more soaking potential than Splash, but less than that horrible Popeye raft ride at Universal that always makes it look like we've been swimming in our clothes.

This also had me cracking up. Like what, you’re not going to notice it’s a hamburger bun if they cut it up into little bread nuggets?!

:rotfl:

Great Universal day! I'm sorry you weren't feeling the best. Isn't Basin the best!!!! I spent a small fortune there last week...

Oh my gosh, Basin is my favourite!! I'm a big fan. Looking forward to picking up a new little thing to try there next week. :lovestruc It's so easy to spend too much money there!

The sun rises and sets on the GF.

Obviously. One of the perks of being fancy and high-class. Makes you wonder what the poor people are doing... 8-)

Glad you got it. :)
I have read so many "I saw this, liked it, didn't get it, regret it" TRs.

It was a good call! I like the strategy of taking at least a few hours to think about it, or a few days if I have the luxury, because impulse shopping is one of my less desirable personality traits. But I still wanted it by the end of the day, and it ended up being a good purchase :)

What did he think of that?

I don't remember. :rotfl: I think he felt like the fish and chips dish was fine, but that he'd had much better elsewhere. But that's mostly a guess based on how pitiful it looks on the plastic plate in the picture with the skinny little pieces of fish. Being from the Maritimes, we're pretty serious about our fish though. For example, I worked briefly at a restaurant from a chain called Jack Astors, and while I was there the menu was totally overhauled, and the fish in the fish and chips was changed from haddock to something else (I wanna say pollock??) Whatever it was, it was considered around Nova Scotia to be a "cheap" less-desirable fish. The managers went to the higher-ups and were like, "yeah...our fish and chips is a great seller right now...but I guarantee that if you change it in Halifax nobody will order it anymore." So Halifax kept the haddock, while everywhere else changed it. I guess we're fish snobs. :confused3

 How is that possible?? It was over 40 minutes about 5 minutes after park opening!

Right!? I was shocked. When we went with my mom and grandmother in December we went straight there as soon as the park opened and it was already at about 70+ minutes. Mind you, this was over the holidays, but still.

That train... such a great idea for a ride.

Agreed! Very smart. And fun, too! So useful, and really immersive for a Harry Potter nerd like myself.

Hmmm... I wonder if that's because Hogwarts is such a magical place in the movies/books?

Quite possibly! I also think there's just something quaint and magical about walking through the village with the snow-topped roofs before you even get to the castle. And I like that it feels a little brighter to me than Diagon Alley.

I saw that one. I liked it too... but...
I really am starting to wonder about all these live action re-makes/re-imaginings.

My understanding is that, at least for a lot of the live action re-makes, that the reason they're being made is to maintain copyrights. I don't have all the info on this, though, so if someone wants to fact check me there I'm fine with that! But if that's the case, it would make sense that they're all coming out at once, and that sometimes, at least to me, it feels a bit like they're phoning them in.

What? Did they think you didn't have teeth, too?

:rotfl:

This is the kind of cracker-jack reporting we've come to expect around here!
(And I just did the exact same over on my TR!)

Trying to catch up as usual...I enjoy reading about the Universal stuff too!! Made me want some Butterbeer :) Sorry the food wasn't all that!!

It's fun! But no, it's definitely a bit more intense than Buzz. The speed that you're actually driving through and shooting the aliens isn't especially fast for the most part, but there are places that it kind of whips/spins you around, and a few times where your ride vehicle spins in one or more circles. If another person from another car shoots a particular part of your car, I believe that will also make you spin. So there's the potential to get a bit dizzy. I sometimes find it a little intense because I'm pretty sensitive to spinning rides, but I typically do okay. And for most regular people it probably wouldn't be enough to bother them too much.

So, after reading that your artist's choice of Africa might be random, no real significance... my jaw hit the ground. I couldn't believe it, then started questioning if I was thinking about the wrong person in my recent binge-reading/lurking spree of TRs.

Africa... AKL... Giraffes.... Finding your "home" (Canada/proposal) within AKL... it's too perfect. (Sure, that view is often shown in Illuminations pics, but I don't tend to believe in coincidences.) I LOVE this tattoo... absolutely LOVE it.

I've been thinking for a while about whether or not to respond to this further, and how, because I found it was actually a bit tricky and uncomfortable for me. But I decided I should, just in case there are those reading this report who feel as I do that it needs to be said, so I'm just going to add a little more info here. I just want to start by saying that I'm a white settler, likely mostly of European descent, and I've been the benefactor of a lot of privilege due to my ancestry and the way that people of colour have been treated where I live. (In the case of my province specifically, especially Indigenous people and African Nova Scotians.) This is something that I, like many other white folks in my part of the world, am still in the process of learning about. I'm embarrassed to say that, until I had this tattooed on my skin, I hadn't even considered the fact that my tattoo would represent Africa so strongly, or imply a connection. While it's true that I love African animals, and that I'd love to visit Africa someday, and while it's true that AKL has a lot of meaning and memories for me, and that AKL has been very much inspired by diverse African cultures, I don't want to imply in any way that I feel like I get to claim Africa as an influence in my life. It's true that the choice of what part of the globe to include was a completely random choice on the part of the artist. (The European countries represented were also random.) It's a beautiful tattoo that I'm proud of, but the only thing I don't like about it is that there's a danger that it could be interpreted as cultural appropriation, as Africa isn't actually a part of my story. And it's easy for me, as a white person, to look at something like this and say, "oh, but it's just a beautiful tribute to a beautiful continent!" But I recognize that that's not necessarily how it would be perceived by someone of African descent who has actually had to deal with the effects of appropriation of their culture. After thinking about it for a while, I just wanted to add my thoughts on this in a public way, and I wanted to also thank you for giving me the opportunity to do that by responding to your comment! I hesitate to go into any more detail on the DIS, or to spark any kind of debate around this, because I don't know how much it could cross over into the realm of political stuff that's not welcome on the boards. But for anyone reading this who'd like to talk to me about it, I'd be happy to to accept thoughts or criticisms in the form of an inbox message.

Obviously. One of the perks of being fancy and high-class. Makes you wonder what the poor people are doing... 8-)
I'm staying at ASMu. Thanks for asking.
I like the strategy of taking at least a few hours to think about it, or a few days if I have the luxury, because impulse shopping is one of my less desirable personality traits.
::yes::
When we first went with the kids (4 & 8 at the time) I told them to not buy anything but to think about it. I'd tell them if we couldn't go back, but for the most part, I said that if they saw something they wanted, we'd make sure to go back the next day to get it. Worked great.
I think he felt like the fish and chips dish was fine, but that he'd had much better elsewhere.
That was my assessment as well.

I'm not in the least surprised.
Agreed! Very smart. And fun, too! So useful, and really immersive for a Harry Potter nerd like myself.
Did you ride it both directions?
I also think there's just something quaint and magical about walking through the village with the snow-topped roofs before you even get to the castle.
::yes::

Oh! Interesting.

That was interesting. I never thought anything about it at all. I thought the choice of Africa/Europe over North America was an interesting choice on the artist's part (or yours), but that's about it.
I think you could easily say that it's the (probable? possible?) birthplace of humans as a whole? Or simply say "It's a globe. Just part of it."
