Our school usually mails a letter a week or two before school starts with the teacher's name and the homeroom number.
Does your school do that too?

Our school district posts the class lists for K-8 on the front doors. This year it will be up August 18th @ 3:30 PM. Last year one of the elementary schools posted it two hours early and there was a big fuss made about it. Some people need to get a life! Oldest DS will be in high school this year and his schedule will be mailed to him probably about the same time as they post the lists.

If we're lucky...we might know a couple of days ahead of schedule! The notices usually arrive the Friday before school starts (the next Wed!).

This past year, I was the classroom mom and had a lot of input who my DD was getting in 4th grade. The teacher had assigned her to the same teacher her older sister had 3 years ago. I really didn't think "personality" wise it would of been a good match and let the teacher know. She changed teachers and my DD now has one I think would be a better fit. :) I know I always won't have this opportunity and she does need to learn how to adjust to other people's personalities. It's just that she had a teacher from hell in 2nd and it really turned her off to school. I never want her to go through that again. Also, she has a name very similiar to her sisters (both start with the same letter). They have shared many of the same teachers over the years and quite frankly, she is starting to think that NO ONE knows her name!

DD's elementary posted lists with names of teachers and class mates

Middle school - they are in units - they are 'assigned a unit when they enter 6th - and each unit just lists the homeroom - they get their class schedule the first day of school

My old district in PA... used to send us a letter less than one week before school.

This district in NJ, let us know the teacher and class assignments on the last day of school

It was nice knowing who the teachers are on the last day of schoo.

Elementary school gets the teachers name on the report card at the end of the previous year.

Ours is the same as CamColt...it's on the report card we receive the last day of school. This year was no surprise as Ty will have the same teacher as last year...he's in a looping grade 3/4.

August 16th this year -- district information day. That's the day we go to school and find out teachers, buy treat day cards, pay for milk, join PTA, join Scouts, buy entertainment books, etc. Last year they had a promotion with Krispy Kreme donuts - buying a bonus card. Seems they always find something new to entice us.

My kids got their letter on Saturday. They start to school next Monday (the 4th). One year, I waited for my letter, never got one. A friend of my dd's told her when open house was, then I had to scourage all the lists looking for her name. I finally found it. I got my letter about the open house the next day.

DD is in a private school and we don't find out which teacher until we pick them up after the first day.

They have an opening service in the church on the first morning of school and all the kids, parents and teachers attend. They call each grade up to the front, and those kids go off with the teachers for that grade. Once they're in the classroom wing of the school, they separate the kids into their individual classes. There are two classes per grade in most grades, and three per grade in some of the younger classes.

The reason they started this "tradition" was that they wanted to avoid any "lobbying" by parents over which teacher their child was placed with.

The Wed before school starts (Aug 25), so Aug 20th for us. Although I already know who are teachers are going to be (small private school), we find out who the homeroom teacher is on the 20th.

They post the lists at 4:00 pm the day before school starts...AFTER the office has closed. Like Bet's school, ours does not want anyone going into the office lobbying for a different teacher.

I actually already know who my daughter is getting for 5th grade but we'll go look at the list to see who her classmates are. :)

School starts for her on Monday, 8/11, so they will post the list on Friday this year.

It's amazing because the lists were made before the end of last school's year , other than the kids who are enrolling during the summer, everyone else was already assigned a teacher. I guess the office staff does not want to deal with the switching teachers before school starts, I'm sure people do that. Personally I have had a personal choice sometimes for certain teacher ( like I do this year for first grade ), but I won't make any changes if dd gets another teacher, in my opinion is don't change things unless you have a problem, my oldest had a teacher in second grade that is famous for being mean , turns out she's strict and some parents don't like that. DD never had a problem with her, but she cried the first day that she didn't want the mean teacher. I told her she had to give the teacher a chance and she had no problems after that.
They also have an open house day usually a couple of days before school starts, they get to most of the time meet the teachers, take a look at the materials they will be using and find out who the classmates will be. Interesting how it's different in different schools.

Teacher names are also written on report cards on the last day of school. It was like that when I went to school too (five hours west of here.)

Ours is as Michelle described - the day before school starts, after the office is closed.

DS is heartbroken, as am I, that the teacher he had hoped to get for 3rd grade has left - she and her husband have relocated. One of the big drawbacks about living in Washington, D.C., is that people, particularly those in government office, tend to be transient. :( He's has lost quite a few of his best friends within the past couple of years, its always so sad. :(

So I don't know the new teacher they are replacing the one we liked with, the other 3 seem o.k. I just hope we get as lucky as we did last year - DS loved his teacher (a male, unusual for 2nd grade).

Ours are supposed to be listed outside the school next week. We shall see...

DD's school post the list on the front door 2 or 3 days before school starts. She's in middle school and her elem. school was the same way.

Our school mails the list about 2-3 weeks prior to the start of school....It is a very secret list.....Kept under lock and key and penalty of death until the official release...:D :D :D :D

We should find ours out a week or two before school starts. At this point we have 42 children enrolled K-8, so they don't even know which classes will be combined so it is hard to place the teachers. Our new principal hasn't even arrived yet and she will be the one making the decision.
