When does school let out in your area?

I know just what you mean. I think it is utterly ridiculous that we in the Deep South go back to school in early August, the very hottest part of the summer. You know the air conditioning has to cost an arm & a leg. And the poor kids...the buses are NOT air conditioned and it gets up in the 100s on the buses. I dont' know why we can't go back to school after Labor Day and get out of school in June!

I can't speak for GA, but in my part of SC there really isn't any difference between Aug. and Sept. By law, the kids can't start before the 3rd week of Aug, which was around the 17th this year if I'm remembering right. We get out somewhere between the Fri. before Memorial Day and the first few days of June, it seems to be different every year.

Tell it to your tourism dept. They want Southern families to start vacationing before Memorial Day because they know that tourists from further north are often locked into later school ending because of snow-day makeup.

Not until June 22nd here, if we use all five snow days. - But we've only used three (and oddly not for snow - for a Hurricane power outage the first week of school) so we may get out the 20th.

It is hot when they go back but if they went in June, it would be hot too. Besides September is one of the hottest months here.

How many school days do y'all have?

Our calendar includes 185 days for students. However that includes 5 snow days, so the kids are actually in school 180 days.
If we don't use the snow days, we get them back, but they are not taken off the end of school, we get random days off in May and June to use them up.

This year, we get out June 21st.

We go back 9/6/2012 and get out 6/25/2013

I'm in the Houston area and my kids get out May 31 and go back the 3rd week of August.

We are scheduled to get out on June 12th but have had one (only one!) snow day this year, so if we don't have anymore, we'll get out on June 13th. That's pretty early; last year we didn't get out until the 20th because of all the snow days! In August, faculty/staff go back on 8/27 and the kids start on 8/29. Grrrr... I HATE going back to school in August. Among other things, it makes it hard for the kids to get a summer job in the nearby resort towns when they cannot guarantee they can work through Labor Day.

I think we have 175 student days.

Out around May 15 and back Aug 7 here. 13 snow days were built into the calendar, we have used 1, thus the early end date.

I like this schedule better, 1/2 year exams are in December instead of a week or 2 into the new year. I hated having exams hanging over my head during break. It's very compatible to college schedules too. If they went back after Labor Day, then they are not out until late June. The temp is no different here in June than it is in August.

North Carolina usually gets out on June 10 but, since that's a Sunday, we'll get out on June 8.

This is us too. DD has early dismissal on 6/8. DS is finished whatever day that week he has his last final. They have 11 full weeks of summer vacation this year; since August 25th is a Sat they don't start back until Monday 8/27

Kids last day is June 6th. Typically go back the Wednesday for Labor day. Been that way since I was in school. Get a three day week, then a 4 day week then a full week. We are scheduled 180 days. We do have some built in snow days but what they do is have random days off during a month ( usually around a holiday but not always) and mark them as snow makeup days. So if they have a cancellation ( we havent even delayed this year) they make them up then and if there are too many they add days at the end of the year.

DS9's school always starts on a Wednesday and ends on a Wednesday. His school gets out this year on June 20. He won't go back until after Labor Day.

We get out May 18 and go back Aug 3. I am VERY excited about our new calendar, we go 9 weeks, then 2 weeks off, 9 on 2 off, etc. That means 2 weeks off in Oct, 2 and Christmas, 2 at Spring Break.

This works really well for DH. She gets really bored going to day camps all day every day all summer (DH and I both work - no long days by the pool for us) and starts to miss school after about a month. The 2-week breaks feel really long, and it gives us a chance to vacation in October! They put it to a vote and more than 75% of parents in our district voted for the new calendar.

I guess I have a hard time seeing the benefit of the old calendar with a super-long summer. It just seems arbitrary to me, but then our schools have AC.

Hi all! I live in Louisiana, and our last day of school this year is May 22nd.

I'm just curious...when does the school year end for everyone else?

As long as we don't have any snow days between now and the end of winter, the last day of school here (CT) will be Thursday June 21st, I think.

We get out around 5/24 and go back 8/15. Depending on snow days (none so far), that date may change by a day or two. My kids get out 6/1 but possibly a few days earlier. They go back at the same time.

DS10(5th grade) gets out June 26th (a Tuesday)
DD15(H.S. sophmore) gets out June 22nd (a Friday)
They both go back after Labor Day.

*both have 3 snow days built into their schedule but, neither school has used any. If no snow days are used DS's school will get out 3 days earlier (so last day will be June 21st-Thursday). DD goes to High School and it is my understanding that if they have unused snow days they WILL NOT get out any earlier because graduation is already set, so they will give them the extra days here and there at the end of May or early June.
