When does it make sense to do an add-on?

So I haven't done an actual financial analysis, but in general, when do you think it makes sense to do an add on? For our last trip in Sept. I had to add 50 points to get the 2BR we needed, and now for our next trip looks like I'll be adding at least 60...so at what point should I just buy the extra points instead of having them transferred from another member? I am already calculating that I will pay $1100+ for those points to "rent" the extra ones I needed, which I could have put toward buying an add-on. Of course then I would have maintenance fees...what do you all think? I don't want to keep doing this and then realize I already paid for an add-on after a few trips!

I would say that if you keep having to rent, borrow or transfer points year after year, you probably need more points.

I would think if you have to rent points more than twice. And in your case two years in a row is a pretty good sign that it might be time to add on. Besides it looks like a good time to add on.

When does it make sense to do an add-on? you ask - every time i get enough $$ saved up! ;)

We faced the same issue. We decided to add on points. You really need to sit down and plan your vacation goals each year and how Disney plays into that. When we first purchased we bought too few because we wanted to get our feet wet. Now that we have been members for three years, we absolutely love it. Many members here at DIS will suggest that using your points on Concierge, World Passport or DCL is a mistake. We thought about it carefully and decided it was better for us to buy more points and if we feel so inclined we will use the extra points on DCL or whatever if we think we do not want to go the resorts this year or as many times as we do.

That took the pressure off of thinking we "had" to use the points and we just settled into thinking we are Disney committed and sit back and enjoy. Good luck with your decision!

When you have to keep borrowing points.

There is a pretty good deal going on now for SSR plus you can get 2 AP's depending on # of point added. 130 gets the 2 AP's, but you can get daily pass's for fewer points. Sounds like your past the point of needing more points when you rent 50 / 60 points a year ($1,100.), even at $95. a point you already spent enough for 11.5 points. :teacher:

Or you can skip a year of going to DVC and let yourself get into a bank mode to have the points you need.

Now we have never been in a banking mode - so this method doesn't work for us! :rotfl2:
