When do you stop hiding eggs on Easter?

My kids are in the 5th & 8th grade, I'm thinking that they may be to old go hunting for eggs on Easter morning? When did you stop hiding the eggs for the kids?

This year is our first year not doing it. My youngest is in 4th grade.

Well, I don't hide eggs anymore, but I still hide my DD's Easter basket - and she's 15.

I think she actually enjoys looking for it, and if not, she's doing a good job pretending she does.

I have to admit we spoiled "the kids". My oldest nephew is now 25 and the youngest is 20... and I think last year was the first year we didn't hide eggs for them. We considered stopping years ago but just found it amusing to watch teenagers run around the yard trying to find the eggs. Of course, they were willing to look because the eggs (plastic) mostly contained money - anywhere from $.50 to $2.

About 4 years ago we played a joke on them. We had the eggs ready so they could see them, made them wait in a bedroom where they wouldn't be able to see where we hid the eggs and then we only put out a few in plain site. The rest we put in the garage before calling "the kids" to come start the hunt. It was very hard to keep a straight face as we watched them run around my sister's very large yard trying to figure out where all those eggs had gone. I think that went on for 10-15 minutes before they started to catch on. They were not amused... and were placated only when we told them we'd really hide them so they could get their money.

The next year we discussed butting bolts, washers, nuts, and some "shiny new pennies" in the eggs so they'd rattle as usual until the kids opened them. We didn't though but did cut back dramatically on the number of eggs (I think the high was like 30 dozen for 5-6 kids). This year the eggs will only be for the young kids, my DD (3) and great-nephew (4).

My DS's are the same ages as your kids. We normally do Easter Baskets with a gift in it and a small amount of candy and then an Easter Egg hunt with eggs filled with toys and money (.25, .50, $1). Well, this year there is a Renaissance Fair in town all weekend that my DS's were dying to go to, so DH and I figured we would do a small candy Easter Basket for each of them and then go to the Ren. Fair in lieu of the Easter Egg hunt. When we told them there would be no Easter egg hunt for them this year they were both upset. I thought it wouldn't matter to them , that it was just a silly tradition that they were pretending to enjoy for DH and my benefit. I was wrong. So.... we'll be having Easter Egg hunts for as long as my DS's enjoy them and are willing to participate....This was our first year without Santa Claus (DS11 told me he really didn't believe last year, but didn't have the heart to tell me...) so I'd like to keep as many of the "kid" holiday traditions around as long as possible....

I've been wrestling with this myself. Only my "kids" are DD21 and DS16. DD could do without, but DS still loves holiday traditions and kid things. So I guess I have to go out today to make Easter baskets . I think when you have two kids it's too tempting to stop when the older one is ready. But you have to carry through for the younger.

when my middle DS who is 14 begged me not to make them hunt eggs this year. I just did easter gift bags for them instead. We are going to sunrise so there really isn't much time anyway.

I never really did that. We might have gone to an Egg hunt. But we stopped when dd was in 1st grade because we would get lots of those plastic eggs and then throw them away. They always have crummy candy in them nowadays.

My kids have the same thought about the holidays. But I know my 8th grade DD wants to hunt for egss only to beat her sister. This was our 1st Christmas without Santa also. But my DH still put out cookies and milk.

Bball Mom my boys are 21 and 17. I still hide eggs mostly for 17 year old. This year I was very upset my 21 yr old had to work (he could have gotten out of it if he wanted to ) till 12 and then we go to my mother's. I am still going to hide them for 17 but it will not be as much fun if there is no competition. Last year my husband ruined it...he only filled some with money..the rest he put little notes in like "oops the bunny missed this one" or "if at first you don't succeed try, try again" B/c there were so many eggss the kids were really psyched. It was I will admit kind of funny but not really in my opinion. I JUST want some little kids again to use on holidays.

You are so right Microcell. Truth be told my mother still makes me a basket so obviously..she does not want to give up either. Never stop doing stockings or leaving out cookies for Santa either. So what if the dog eats them...they are still "gone" in the morning...Proof Santa was there. My kids think I am crazy BUT I know they will be just the same.

I have another thought. At 32 and married, whenever I'm home for Christmas, I still made my dad each Christmas eve read the night before Christmas b/c that's the family tradition. We did it through the time of college, etc. at my insistence b/c I loved the family tradition - could this be one of those times? We never did egg hunting, but I bet I would have been devastated if we did it growing up and it just stopped.

This will be the first year we haven't hidden eggs for the kids (22,17,15) and that's because we leave for WDW very early Easter morning. We won't stop until they want to stop. We use the plastic eggs and fill them with candy and money. Happy Easter everyone.

My kids are 13 and 10 1/2. I told them this year that the Easter Bunny was not going to hide eggs this year, just their Easter baskets and my older one just looked at me, rolled her eyes and said,

"IT SOUNDS LIKE THE EASTER BUNNY IS GETTING LAZY!"

Muffycat you know deep in your heart that you wanted to do it you just wanted validation. And forget the drug store go to Walmart they had better empty eggs. Huge bag for under 2 dollars.
