When do points get consumed? Can you later change which points get consumed?

Simple case, let's say I have a reservation using current use year points for September 18th to September 25th, 2010. Someone posts to the DVC Rent/Trade board that they have available points that expire at the end of September 2010. Can I buy/transfer those points into my account to use with my existing reservation, freeing my current use year points making them available for use later this (use) year or bank for next year?

Another case, let's say I have a September use year, and my reservation for September 18th to 25th, 2010 uses banked, current and borrowed points. If I need to cancel this reservation then any banked or borrowed points need to be used before August 31, 2011, the end of my current use year. Correct?

Does anyone have any gee I wish I knew that about banked or borrowed point horror stories they want to share where their points effectively became unusable?

You should be able to do that with a call to MS, from other reports here (provided they are transferred to you, not a rented reservation).

Borrowing and banking are final transactions and the points cannot be moved back to their original years once they are banked/borrowed.

Mostly likely if someone is advertising points that expire at the end of Sept that means they are already banked. Banked points cannot be transferred so you could not receive them into your account. You could always see if they could book a reservation for the dates you want and rent it from them but you would not have control. Then you could cancel your reservation and bank the points if eligible.

If you did get a transfer of eligible points you would be able to substitute the points in your current reservation if: 1) the points were the same as the resort you were staying at or 2) if they were not then you made the original reservation at the 7 month or less booking period.

You have to have the reallocation done more than 31 days out from your stay or the original points go into holding. At least that's what MS has told me.

Only current points may be transferred - banked points cannot be transferred and borrowed points cannot be transferred. In your scenario above, the answer will depend on the specifics of the reservation - was it made during the Home Resort priority and are the transferred points from that same resort? If it was made using the 11 month priority and you want to substitute points from a different resort shortly before arrival MS may not allow you to reallocate the points. If the transferred points are from the same resort, they are usually able to substitute the new points. The same would be applied to an add-on purchase - if the points are from the same resort, they will likely be able be used for the reservation.
