When do kids start losing their teeth?

My 5 year old (just turned in April) has a loose tooth. He told me the other day that one of his teeth hurt and I looked and said "We'll have the dentist look at it on Monday". Pure coincidence that he has a dentist appointment this morning.

So I totally forgot about that until just now when he said "I think I have a loose tooth." So I looked again and sure enough one of his front teeth is loose. I asked him if he bumped it on something and he said no. Isn't 5 young to start losing teeth?

My friend's daughter lost her first tooth when she turned 4. I don't think 5 is too young. I think the average age is between 5 and 7.

My oldest son started losing teeth when he was 6. My twins just turned 6 and haven't started losing them yet. I think it is different for every child.

My dd lost 4 teeth before she turned 5, so I 'd say your son is just fine.

My son is 5 and has lost his 2 bottom teeth. A lot of kids in his kindergarten class have their top 2 teeth missing also. So I think your son is right on target!

I lost my two bottom teeth shortly after turning 5. My two top teeth before 5 1/2.

My 5 1/2 year old just mentioned the other day that he has a loose tooth. I thought it was early too, but then this weekend, 2 of my 6 year old soccer players (I coach DS' team) showed me that they had lost teeth during the week. I guess I was hoping that DS wasn't old enough to start losing baby teeth -- trying to keep him a baby, I think.

I've always heard that most kids lose their first tooth between ages 4 and 7. It does vary pretty widely, so even if "average" is 5 or 6, it's not considered unusual for a child to be barely 4 or nearly 8.

A bit on the younger side but well within the normal age range IMHO (seems like most kids are about six but I've seen lots of five year olds too over the years)

Anywhere from 5-8 is pretty normal. YOu might be surprised how long it takes to actually come out. My daughter had her first loose tooth in Nov, and the tooth didnt come out until the end of Feb!

ACK!! I'm so was not expecting this yet. We don't know anyone close to his age that has started losing teeth. I thought we would have another year or two at least. The dentist said everything is fine and good. So now I guess all we do it wait!

DS was 7 when his first tooth became loose...two actually. DD is now 5 1/2 and she doesn't have a really loose tooth BUT she does have a perminant tooth coming up behind one of her baby teeth. The dentist pointed it out at her checkup last week. The edge is thru the gum now & even though we have been wiggling her baby tooth every day like he said to, it isn't any looser. I am thinking that the tooth fairy is going to have to be really generous for this one. She hates going to the dentist as it is...this sure isn't going to help.

My DD lost her first at age 7 and 3 months. That was in December. She has lost only one more since then.

lbgraves- both of her 2 permanent teeth so far have come up behind the baby tooth. Dentist did mention pulling at first, but then said he wasn't worried about it. Eventually the adult tooth pushes up and forward and the baby tooth comes out forward. So she's never had a "hole" yet which is actually kind of nice! I wouldn't worry too much about your DD, apparently it happens alot and doesn't usually need to be pulled.

My younger DD on the other hand, knocked out two bottom teeth when she was 1. At 4 3/4, she is almost big enough that it looks natural to have a hole! But as slow as her sister was about teeth, I don't imagine we will see the permanent teeth anytime before age 7.

I'd agree that 5 is the norm.

My DD who is six and a half has yet to even have a wiggly one, but EVERY child in her kindergarten class has already lost at least one tooth! She cries every time she hears about the tooth fairy for fear that she'll never make it to our house, but I've explained that the longer she waits, the more she'll get out of the tooth fairy in the end! So now, she tells all her friends "yea, you lost teeth, but when I lose mine, I'm getting interest AND inflation!"

My dentist said that the age at which they lose their teeth often corresponds to when they came in. My DD got her first couple of teeth really late. Now, at almost 13, she's still late ............ still has a lot of her baby teeth to lose. So often, early to come in - early to lose and vice versa.

I think I lost my first tooth in Kindergarten, so I was about 4 or 5.
