When did your toddler stop sleeping in a crib?

My son was 23 days into his 19th month when he climbed out and my daughter 21 days into her 19th month---how weird is that! In both cases I put the crib mattress on the floor for a few months, then transitioned to a double mattress on the floor for a few months, then transitioned to a box spring for a few months, then onto actual legs on the box spring. I haven't used bed rails, as the height transition has been very gradual. Strangely, my kids have never fallen out of bed. Every nap and nighttime I put up a gate in the hallway in front of the stairs to prevent sleepy wandering down the stairs. The real challenge was convincing them to stay in their beds, as 19 months was still pretty little to reason. As a pp said, I silently escorted them back to bed (many, many, many times), but it wasn't so bad and certainly easier than helping a baby try to sleep through the night. Good luck. I was actually happy to be rid of the crib.

DH and I were watching our DGS today. He is 17 mos and at the beginning stage of trying to climb on and off everything in sight. He is successful so far at climbing on and off couches and some chairs. As we watched him we noticed he puts his leg up to climb out of somethings as well like his pack n play, crib. etc We know it won't be too long before he is successful at this too so we are wondering:

What age did your child master climbing out of his/ her crib or pack n play and finally transition to a big bed. They never did that they were alrady in a big girl bed before they started climbing.We coslept often with breastfeeding so by 1 I started moving them to their own room and out of the crib/out bed.

Did you use a regular size twin bed or child size one? twin, started on the floor and then raised on the supports once they were older.

Did you use side rails to protect child from falling out? yes even when it was on the floor

What techniques did you use to keep him/ her in his bed at nap or bed time?I usually laid down with them for a little while each time and talked or read to them

Our DD did not venture out of her crib until nearly 3. No warning either. One day DH and I were repainting her room. We had put her in her crib just outside of her room to keep an eye on her swhile we paintedf. Next thing we know she is standing beside us. Boom!! Time for a big bed. Actually we had a corner unit that we used for her for awhile. The bed on it was a bit lower so didn't have to worry about her falling out.

DGS stay over night with us at least two nights a week. We are his primary sitters while DD and DSIL work and go to school. He is giving us plenty of warning that he is heading for an escape sometime soon. LOL So any helpful suggestions tips, etc would be greatly appreciated.

DS was about 15 months when he climbed out of his crib for the first time. He did it for several nights (and naptimes) in a row, so I added a crib tent to his crib to try and keep him in one place. Darn child...he figured out how to dislodge that thing in one night! Gave up and went to a toddler race car bed...and suffered the early morning wake-ups...

My twins started climbing out around 22 months at which point we got them crib tents, they have been working out GREAT!

My two oldest went into regular twin beds with bedrails at 2.5 yrs old. My youngest is 22 mos and is in a crib with a crib tent. I'm not sure when he'll go into a big bed, but it won't be any time soon. He's such a little monkey - I like having him in his crib where he can't get into trouble.

My DD is 2.5 (technically, 2yrs 8 months), and she's still in her crib. She climbs in but hasn't yet realized she could climb out. We plan on getting her into a bed in the next month or so. DH is building her a playhouse/bed, and we're just waiting for him to finish it. But she's gotta be out of the crib long before February, when we'll need it for her new sib!

Right after my son's 2nd birthday, I put him down for a nap in his crib. About 10 minutes later, I heard a huge thump and found my son on the floor. He was fine, but we picked up a toddler bed that day. We thought about a twin bed at that point, but decided to get the toddler bed, keep the linens and matress and upgrade to a twin bed later.

He adjusted to the toddler bed right away, and we've never had a problem with him sleeping in it. And now, he gets up in the morning and plays quietly in his room, allowing me to sleep in. Score!

My 3 oldest were almost 4 - they LOVED their cribs. My twins were under 3 - they were climbing out all of the time! We always transitioned to twin beds.

Our boys couldn't get out of their crib, DH made it, and the mattress was extra low for that reason!

We moved our then 2-1/2 yo out when DS2 was born, he went straight to a twin bed with a bedrail (DH also made this bed). DS2 inherited the crib when he was born. When he was about 2-1/2, DH converted it to a toddler bed. About 6 months ago, at the age of 4-1/2, we got him a twin mattress. DH is working on his twin bed, but it's not finished quite yet, and he was unable to work on it for awhile due to some work/time issues.

All 3 of my kids received a twin size bed/bedding as one of their second birthday presents.
