When did pizzas become flatbreads?

I really don't care what we all agree to call them, but it would have been nice if I got a vote.

I think it happened the same year the word "foodie" was introduced to Websters dictionary.

As luck would have it, I was just watching a cooking show on the food channel where this exact (or almost exact) topic came up. Seems a flatbread has a much thinner crust and isn't usually round like a pizza. And they are usually prepared in a "wood burning" oven instead of a traditional pizza oven.

I always assumed the difference was in the dough.

BUT I think flatbreads are traditionally from places that would top them with cheese etc. So disney just make square pizzas and call tem flatbreads so they can have pizza on the menu and make it fit into being african (or insert other nation) without having to call it 'pizza'

I'm 99% certain most places in africa you'd be pushed to find a BBQ chicken pizza (sorry! - flatbread)

I thought that these were valid theories, until I saw flatbreads on both the Mama Melrose and Tony's Town Square menus.

Never! We live in the NE and pizza's can be pies, but what's up with the flat bread thing? I think of flat bread as something you dip into hummus. Maybe they are just being politically correct not to offend the pizza!
