when and where to buy travel insurance

Last time I went to disney I drove and booked with CAA so I booked medical travel insurance only. It was fairly cheap, I think 62 for 12 days for my family of 4.

Should I go with CAA again. Not sure if I should just get medical or trip cancelation and interruption. Is that even possible now, or do I need to get this when I book with airline ticket?

For me I generally don't buy cancellation insurance unless it's a really expensive trip (which for a family of 5 it sometimes can be). There's a ton of exclusions and the insurance is usually pretty expensive.

As for health insurance I've priced plans out a number of times and usually end up going with Presidents Choice Financial Insurances. I just checked their prices and for a family of 5 (2 adults, 3 kids) it comes out to $50 for 12 days. There's a number of other options out there for this. Also some credit cards automatically provide both types of insurance if you use the card to book your trip. May want to check into that as well.

You can book medical insurance at any time.

If you have a TA, ask them. They should be able to book medical insurance for you, provided that your TA is not in the US.

I always do CAA. You don't have to book a trip thru CAA to get insurance. We booked directly thru Disney in January & last week I called CAA to get insurance. You can do it right over the phone & they will mail you the policy. I bought it over the phone last weekend & received it in the mail on Thurs.

I'll email and check with my TA. She is canada so that won't be a problem.
If not I'll check with CAA.

Since we travel often. I had the Annual Travel policy added to my BMO Mastercard.

$99 a year for the deluxe complete package:
That is for Medical
as well as Trip cancellation ,inturuption , lost baggage..etc...


$60 a year for Travel insurance only... if you are already covered for Medical by a work policy or whatever
It covers unlimited trips under 31 days in length.
Only condition is that you have to book your trip with your card.

Can't beat it!!!!

Definately a good deal with the credit card. We only travel once a year though so for us to pay $43 for the 3 of us to go is still cheaper, but if we travelled more, I would definatley get that on my card. I just have a basic BMO Mastercard.

Depending on how much you travel it might work out better to buy yearly insurance. I buy a plan through my bank (Royal) which is $140 for the year but covers my whole family. My Dh travels alot for business and we do many weekend shopping trips to the States along with our regular vacations so it is really worth it. My Dh was in an accident this past May in Tampa and his medical bills were over $8000 and not a cent out of our pocket.
